OK, it has been a few days...any pics of the snowfall out there? From a tech standpoint, how many inches fell? Saw it was near Whitefish, is that close to you? You may be in for a good ski season!

No snow here yet, I'm a few hours south of Whitefish. Nothing here currently but forest fires and smoke.

Might as well smoke a brisket if it's gonna be smokey anyway.

On a tech note, I should pay more attention to this gauge. I don't remember it reading this high before. Looks like a new thermostat might be on order soon, just for peace of mind.

If you don't have any coolant leaks...................................do a compression test.

If you turn the heat on, does it stabilize and return to normal?

I'll give it a shot on the way home today after work. Usually when I have the heat blasting it's cold enough that the engine stays around 185ish, when I'm not running the heater it's hot obviously, that's when I see the warmer engine temp.

Could it just all be circumstantial?

Maybe I should just pull the engine and rebuild it? I could adjust the valves again.

All jokes aside, I did notice it was warm again yesterday, but I was also hitting the skinny pedal hard.

Performance TLC once offered an air-pump delete pulley. It allows two grooves, two belts to run the water pump. 1958-1984 FJ40, FJ45 and FJ55 Fan Belt and Hose Kits - Specter Off-Road - https://www.sor.com/cat/054c#tab2 With the way that the2F water pump and alternator are situated on the engine, the water pump itself doesn't get as much belt-contact as the crank pulley or alternator. Could belt-slippage, due to a stretched-out belt, or inadequate tension be an issue? Does your fan run on a viscous coupling?

Maybe I should just pull the engine and rebuild it? I could adjust the valves again.

I would start by pulling the tub and see what you can find from there…

I'm gonna call for an update on 44 tomorrow... Should be done soon but, I won't hurry them... Just do it right and get the muffler shop to do it right too.

Once I get past this ne t round of Dr appts and take another short Tundra/Casita trip or two with Dianna and the boys, I'm hoping to make a few 44 trips up into the Big Empty before it's too cold to camp.

I'll keep you apprised.

BTW the 'fee' campgrounds in the Conejos River Valley of the Rio Grande National Forest close after Labor Day. But the dispersed camping is available... As long as the road (NFS 250, off of Hwy 17, between Anotonito, CO and Chama, NM) is open.

If you have the time, it's a great place to fly fish... A lot of public access, with a lot of different types of conditions... Rainbows and browns and Platoro Reservoir (highest man made reservoir in U.S.) has some type of salmon... Chinook? Can't recall.

Sorry for the hijack, Ryan!! But, good camping/fishing info for you too!!

As a teenager my dad and I took his 4wd up above the Platoro Reservoir and camped and fished. Just below the dam is as far upstream as trout can go in the state, and as a result it was packed with trout nearly as long as my arm, and we enjoyed fresh caught trout cooked on the campfire each day. I lived out of state and was visiting my dad, who was born there, and that was his favorite camping and fishing spot. Tragically, years later my dad shared with me that the Clinton / Gore administration had declared it a mandatory catch and release spot (thinking that would be a good thing) and it had ruined it. He said people would unknowingly handle the trout before releasing it (without wetting their hands first, and/or with bug spray on their hands) and many of the big beautiful trout were swimming around with white patches on them in the shape of finger and hand prints, and many floating upside down with white patches on them. It removes or damages the protective slime layer and makes them sick and/or kills them. What a shame. Glad I got to see it before it got messed up, and I hope something was done to stop the problem.

Oil change, cleaned and gapped the plugs, cleaned the distributor cap, and a spray down of the carb with some carb cleaner.

Seems to run a tad better now.

I've also been thinking more about the temp gauge issue, seeing how the temp sender is in the back of the head in my mind it makes sense that it may be a little hotter back there opposed to the location of the actual thermostat. I thought for about 30 seconds about moving the sender up the the t stat housing, but knowing that winter will be here soon enough I figure I'll just keep an eye on it a tad longer.


It ain't broke, no need to fix it.

I've also been thinking more about the temp gauge issue, seeing how the temp sender is in the back of the head in my mind it makes sense that it may be a little hotter back there opposed to the location of the actual thermostat. I thought for about 30 seconds about moving the sender up the the t stat housing, but knowing that winter will be here soon enough I figure I'll just keep an eye on it a tad longer.


It ain't broke, no need to fix it.

My 60 had a very slow coolant leak; was steaming out an old cracked hose. Anyhow, I’d always know when it was getting low because on startup you could hear water rushing through the heater core. Like a babbling brook (trying to tie in fishing….). Anyhow, rambling way of saying if I was hearing that noise I’d usually get warmer on my drive home from work so I knew to add some coolant. I don’t think that’s what you have going on but…. just trying to be a contributor. So anyhow, I’d definitely pull the tub so you can check the valves.

There’s almost a 30* difference between the Dakota sender in the stock location(head) and the Sniper sender in the block drain on the 72. 190* and 220* with the AC running.

I debated adjusting the valves on this go round, I decided to pass. Maybe next month.
