Another trip, another opportunity to break the Orvis Helios rod. This is the 4th time it's broken while fishing. Sent it back again for repair, this time they're picking up the tab after I discussed just getting my money back. They'll only offer to reimburse whatever the "lowest sale price" was for that rod.

I said fix it again then, only y'all need to pay for it.

here comes the smoke from a fire in the Selway.

Spotted this South American 43 around town a few times, finally stopped to check it out. Overall it seems to be a nice rig.

I failed to mention we spotted a big grizz about 20 yards off of the river while we were floating by, big like the size of a VW bug big. It ran straight up the side of the hill beside us, in a hurry.

My buddy was terrified.

2 hours later I was nearly attacked by a bald eagle that was trying to steal my fish.

I think I’m more scared of the eagles than a grizz. However we don’t have grizzlies.

The eagle was only about 10 feet above my head, talons out, dropping down to steal my fish. It scared the crap out of me because it came out of nowhere and was so close. I could have swatted it with my fly rod it was so close.

And at 10 feet or so, wings spread, talons out, damn eagles are HUGE!

I often sport a chinese rod because it didn't break yet. And unlike the dead-in-the-water email made to the domestic manufacturer of the one I got at before it, they even sold me a spare tip-section.
This time last week, a black bear was vocalizing something, just outside my visual range, in response to my, 'hey bear' when I was seemingly the first person on the trail. The nutrient cycle, and defensive behavior of wild animals is always interesting to consider, but it's work to keep it in your favor. Got wolves in your area?

So now we know how the helios got busted.

Go to bamboo.
Meh, I broke the Helios casting a small dry at a lake, not even working it hard. It broke the tip of the butt section just below the ferrule. It was the first time that I've fished that rod since I got it back from the last repair.

I use a 6wt G Loomis and a 3wt Sage in the backcountry, they're about the most durable and reliable rods I have, and both are a blast to fish with.

. Got wolves in your area?
Definitely have some wolves around.

We heard them early one morning in the backcountry, not far away.

@ijonesinsp how was the fishing in the Frank?
The fishing was amazing, but the solitude was the real treat. I caught a few cutt bows around 18” and a million cuts from 10-13”. I made it out last Thursday before all the other fires kicked up. I managed to brave a storm of biblical proportions on Wednesday night in a hammock tent. Turns out there may be a God after all 😂

Was bow hunting up out of Salmon right on the ridge along Montana. Woke up in the morning and had wolf tracks all around our tent. Next morning a couple miles away had grizz tracks about 10 yards from the tent. I know they’re there but I’d rather not KNOW they’re there.
