Across North America in Five Weeks!

Maybe the "batons" should have GPS, camera, lighter adapter and able to link to the internet....sort of like a smart phone maybe?

Is it possible to hit all lower 48? Maybe the "baton" could be something like a passport with a stamp/sticker of each state. Or maybe a big travel case you can put stickers on from each stop and then also put a small piece of memorabilia in there... Perhaps too aggressive? That's a lot of ground to cover.

Wow one guy takes his 40 cross country and now everybody wants to head out across America willy nilly in their decrepit old Land Cruisers! You guys are Whack-A Doos. hecrod started this and now sggoat Gary ups the ante. Cruiser parts suppliers would see a vast upswing in sales across the country, large numbers of old 40's would be getting outfitted and upgraded to become more roadworthy. Beer sales would skyrocket as us half ass mechanics take to the garage to get the units in shape, non running or project LC owners may be inspired to get theirs running and projects finished.... Plus it would be fun! I don't see a downside.. Possibly start the fun down in the Florida Keys..Key West...Southernmost point in the US....Yeah sign me up.

OK... it seems like we have some basic interest in the idea. I'll kick off a new thread on Friday, outlining the idea, the variables (legs, maps, batons, etc), those that have "signed up" and whatever else I can remember between now and then!

Gary (@sggoat idea originator) and I exchanged some emails and he is OK with the approach... credit where its due!

Anyway, more on this soon... should be fun!

Don't forget @allan man

I'd be in for Texas, NM, and Colorado leg.
Calling out 1911, you up for a tag team?

'nice Defender'
Hah!

If we had multiple 40s running all the way across the US we would need to have a truck and trailer behind the group, kind of like the Harley guys, to pick up all the rigs that break down!

Five more random pictures I had somehow neglected to previously post...

In Chamberlain South Dakota... by the Missouri River... my brother and I drove here after visiting Badlands National Park earlier in the day. This city is a treasure! The views from the dirt roads above the river were something else. People that live here are lucky! Eating at Busted Nut Bar & Grill was a treat!

(PS. the picture below resembles some 70's advertising pictures from Toyota right?)

Needles Highway, a National Scenic Byway... in the Black Hills in South Dakota... what a drive!

Badlands National Park... where? In South Dakota of course! This entire drive, on a late afternoon was one of the best. The afternoon had turned eerily dark, and the cloud formations spoke of hail and tornadoes! We saw none of that on this day though... the day before? Well that was a different story (see post 194)!

Jasper National Park in Canada... Icefields Parkway... this is the best 100 miles I've ever driven. This particular spot, by the Athabasca Glacier, was spectacular.

Devils Tower in Wyoming. Take a look at the pine trees in the earth formation to get a sense of scale...

I'm starting to plan my next road trip... only two weeks, but it should still be a lot of fun... early Summer '17. Mostly through Maine and Eastern Canada this time. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. I'm thinking Labrador too... but that may be too far... we'll see!
