I have almost 600 miles logged on my L96/4l80e swap

The power is great, it's nice not having an old tractor motor anymore. In hindsight I should have went with the 6L80e with the lower first gear and extra OD. I would also have gone electrical fans instead of a mechanical. The amount of time invested building a shroud even with the Summit kit, seems kinda pointless with a properly plumbed coolant system my thermostat consistently stays around 190-196 unless going uphill which might top out at 210. Those electric fans are preset for 195 and 205/210.

One thing that had me running around in circles was chasing a lean code, which ended up being the base tune from BP Automotive had the fuel trims way out of whack. Also, for the price you pay for Mark's adapters, you would think they would at least spend the money on thread inserts instead of relying on soft cast aluminum with bolts that are supposed to be torqued to 50+ft/lbs.

Looks great but why the fuse from the alternator? Did your original alternator charging wiring not include a fusible link?

I had the original charge wire with the built fusible link but wasn't going to work with my battery clamp setup. So I mimicked the Gen 3 style junction box but with a 175 amp fusible link.

Any of you guys that have been running these swaps for a while have any input on which fluid to use for the power steering? I never saw a real answer or any solid input. Toyota uses Dex III and GM recommends a power steering fluid. Does the ATF play nice with the chevy pump? This is the way i was leaning since im still using the Toyota gear.

In my stock 80 I ran the atf as well because that’s what Toyota recommended. Not with the LS I have part of system, the pump, asking for ps fluid, and the Toyota stuff asking for atf. So I’m at a crossroad. I don’t wanna have to rebuild stuff because of fluid choice lol. I’m leaning towards atf. But unsure.

I'm running PSC 715 on a stock auto parts store pump and remote reservoir. Used to be called swepco 715.

Due to @White Stripe comment, which is correct, I decided to do more research.

Toyota recommends ATF (ATF DEXRON® II or III) for Power Steering Fluid. DEXRON VI is the replacement for DEXRONs II/III) as it is backward compatible.

However, my PS Pump from Tuff Stuff says this:

Now, one must weigh replacing a Toyota Power Steering Gear (💰 x 25) vs GM Power Steering Pump (💰).

This is why I originally went with DEXRON VI but I am now revisiting this.

A forum post suggests GM Part Number 9985010 for DERON III power steering systems.

Replacement for 9985010 is 19329448, AKA 105073. Just so happens that Rock Auto also suggest 105073 for the vehicle I originally got the motor from: 2020 GMC Savana.

So, this is what I would run now: Rock Auto

I looked back as far as 2003 and Rock Auto showed the same PS Fluid: 10-5073. Pre-2003 still called for ATF. You need to confirm for your particular application.

I will swap out my DEXRON VI for GM PS 105073 fluid when I get a chance. I will buy the 32 oz version: 105044

AC Delco 105074 (16 oz), AC Delco 105073 (32 oz), and AC Delco 105044 (32 oz, cold climate formula - for use in areas where temp gets below -20F)

Hope this helps.

In 2017 when I was polishing off my swap I wasn’t sure what to use so I decided by choosing which I would rather replace. GM pump or Toyoda box. That was an easy decision. What I found out is the pump didn’t seem to mind.

I have a feeling the box won’t mind regular PS fluid either, but like I mentioned, I’m still using Dex 3 to this day.

Same time I finished up a swap on a 84 fj60 still driven daily to this day with zero issues with power steering pump or box. Fully synthetic atf same as i put in the 4l80e transmission.

The basic Saginaw PS pump that we’re using with most LS swaps has been around for eons, way before specific PS fluid ever existed. I don’t think we need to worry about using ATF it . Best pump ever made!

I manufacture and sell some PS products. I've actually designed and tested a lot of stuff beyond just what I have for sale currently. The old Saginaw P style pumps are tanks. They're the best there is.

The newer cheapened up GM Saginaw pumps, not so much. They're pretty junky. I designed some stuff around these pumps, did tons of testing and basically abandoned all of it because those pumps are nowhere near as well made as the old ones.

If you have the old " canned ham" style Saginaw it doesn't matter what fluid you run.
