Good news, the thermostat housing and water pump came out without issue! I’ve always had trouble with those bolts being rusted in but no problem here. Now I need to decide what to do about the timing back plate gasket if I want to pull the full cam or just try and get that gear off.

The cam gear is some kind of composite I’ve never seen before.

It was very nice of the Toyota engineers to incorporate the cupholder just the right size

Your that far in, I would replace the composite cam gear with a metal one( they do fail) You are moving along quickly, it does get to be a lot more fun on assembly!

Thanks, I will take your advice and upgrade to metal gear. Plus that old one will look nice on the wall!.

The most expensive phrase in any restoration..... as long as I’m in there.....

Before tare down motor ran fine but some leaks.

When I drained the oil I did notice a little bit of cream color indicating coolant. Luckily I found a freeze plug that had a couple pinholes in it so I’m confident that was the source. Other than that mechanically everything looks fine inside.I think I will go ahead and change the oil pump, as long as I’m in there. The cylinder walls look great I can actually see some of the crosshatching at the top of each one. I might take the cylinder head apart and bring it in for a fresh up.

Has no nothing to do with replacing the cam gear but if there is a gap between the block and cam gear shouldn't not have to pull the gear to install a new gasket.

A bad free plug will leak coolant outside the engine not into the oil. Would not figure that was a issue for the oil color. How did the head gasket look. That is one of the main cause for coolant in the oil.

Morning,
The Freeze plug with the pin hole is on the PSG side, behind the engine cover, by the push rods ( exposed to the oil circuit). The oil looked 95% good, no debris or smell, just a hint of tan foam indicating small amount of coolant.
The head gasket was good no breach that I could see. The coolant was as oil free as I could see also.

Okay that makes sense getting coolant in the oil. Only freeze plug issue I've had to deal with after my 68 engine rebuild one on the driver's side popped out. Landed on the frame and reset it myself. That was almost forty years ago and still holding.

Curious does your rear floor have four fixed nuts where a rear heater would go. Picked one up out of a 84 HJ47RV just because

I did a check and no bolt holes for heater ( quite a few other "odd ball" holes....)

So I was sidetracked for a couple weeks doing some work on other vehicles, but I got rewarded with some nice shiny old pieces. Found a nice local machine shop to run the valves and the fly wheel for me, excellent work at a really good price.

The fly wheel had some heat cracks but luckily I had an old one in my junk pile and it looks brand new. I have to say geting the old pieces to look so good is more satisfying than opening up the box with new parts in it

This morning I detached the manifolds and only one set of threads was slightly damaged, very happy with those results. Getting them cleaned up for inspection and also starting on the oil pan.

After spending 20 minutes cleaning up the oil pan I realized how much damage and bush repairs have been performed on it. Then I remembered I thought I had one in my junk pile from my 74 and there it is, looks like it lines up OK just need some cleaning and paint And I’ll be ready to go.

Well the oil pan transplant didn’t go off without a hitch. So I took a break and made something look pretty I needed some immediate gratification.

Finally I did solve the issue with the oil pan I thought it was hanging up on the interior baffles, but there was actually a subtle dent in the bottom of the donor pan that need to be pounded out then she fit perfect.

The insulator between the manifolds is toast will need to buy or make one

For the life of me I don’t know why I waited so long to get my blasting cabinet up in service. What a game changer! This morning I installed a dust cyclone and hooked it up to my shop vac. Got everything else plumbed up and started using it with some 80 grit glass bead. Worked like a champ after blasting for a couple hours I checked the dust collector and it did what it was supposed to there was virtually no white dust in my shop back so I won’t burn through filters...

I figured out a system that works for me first I scrape off all of the wet greasy mess, then give everything a quick pass with the wire wheel on the grinder to get the big chunks off, then move to her three little pieces in total blast cabinet for finishing up then off the painting. That way I can kind of mix things up and give my compressor a break.

The dust collector works great but it generates a lot of static electricity I don’t mind the shocks on my arms but when I lean too close and it gets me in the belly that ain’t no fun might have to hook up a ground strap

Just curious, what did the aluminum engine components look like from the factory? Polished? Dulled / scuffed?, Raw Al?

Got the block all cleaned up painted a new freeze plugs put in. Managed to knock a couple of them into the cylinder head but fortunately got them out OK things are slowly coming together and hope to start some more assembly this week.

I tried some header paint on the exhaust manifold and needed to curate through multiple cycles in the oven, not sure how well it’ll work but it was worth a shot

Today was a good day!

Over my lifetime of wrenching I have tackled pretty much every kind a project but usually one or two at a time. This is the first time I’ve done a full frame off and as I was disassembling to be honest I was getting a little bit intimidated. Wasn’t sure if I could remember how everything went back together efficiently. So my plan was to just build and finish one part at a time and chug along. Sadly I got hit with a monkey wrench very early it was really difficult to find leaf spring bushings to fit this odd beast ( for all I know they may not of been stock leaf springs)

After way too much research I finally found some Pro- comp urethane bushings from four wheel parts that would fit the bill. Placed my order on December 26 and on January 7 I received a completely wrong shipment. No worries called him explained the situation and that they must have a part number misalignment and they said they take care of it on January 15 I received the exact same wrong parts again. Called him again tried to explain everything asked to speak to a supervisor with no luck they said they take care of it and on January 25 I received the exact same wrong part.

Luckily I found a solution elsewhere

and they just arrived today so I was able to get the front axle on, what a satisfying feeling I think I’m gonna take a break from the engine rebuild and get all the axles and wheels back on so I can check that box

Had the same experience at Four Wheel Parts years ago, trying to get lug nuts and Bilstein shocks for my 40. Store appeared to be staffed by high school kids with lifted domestic pickup trucks. Frustration of repeatedly getting the wrong parts (and I did their job for them, gave them the right part numbers 🙄) not in any way worth it. I've never been back.

Awesome build thread.

For living in the Phoenix area, you sure do frequent alot of casa grande establishments.

Ciao!

Thanks,
I actually live in Casa grande. I like the slower pace of life ( and lower cost of living than LA- East)
😜
