I have my spare on the drivers side for a better rear view. Its a daily driver and I don't usually go on overland trips on a regular/daily basis ;). From what I can tell, I dont have a lean or the lean is no worse than before - 33" /Toyo MT spare. Fuel can carrier has carried 2 full water cans or 2 full fuel NATO cans without difficulty and does not obscure my rear view. Only when I carry my bicycle with the hitch. I have an earlier generation of Seans bumper though.

Sean, what are the pros and cons of having the ladder step on the DR Side and the
Spare on the Pass side?

I'm looking to get one of your art pieces, but just wanted to see the reason why most of your set ups are Ladder/Drivers side & Spare Pass side.

Thanks Sean!

Personally, I don't think it really matters. I have had others say that if you are stopped on the side of the road (right hand drive), the odds are the truck will be leaning toward the passenger side so the arm would stay open if it is mounted on the passenger side. However, Sean has put a locking mechanism on it so it locks open anyway. Second, I have heard people say that they don't want to have to get the tire off that side and risk standing in traffic, but my thought is why not take the tire off before you swing out the arm to get to the bottle jack.

So, in the end I think it's only a potential visibility issue to a degree and otherwise just personal preference.

Changing a spare with the tire swingout on the side of the road (passenger side) instead of on the traffic side (Drivers side) is probably a little safer too

I opted for passenger side for this reason...was it an option back then Sean?

Wow, this will be my hardest decision on this purchase.
Spare on DR side or PASS side, lol...

The easy part was deciding on this work of art. What springs are you guys running in the back?

I have my spare on the drivers side and no apparent increase in lean one way or another, I did this to provide decent rear viability. In the end its all personal choice and there is no perfect option.

I cannot wait to get this sexy thing on my Cruiser. This bumper is the best deal I've come across and Sean is a heck of a nice guy to work with! Thanks again Sean!

I'm running j springs with this bumper.

I thought I would update my experience with Sean's bumper.

I have only been on three wheeling trips since owning it, but they have been three good trips. I have the bumper fully loaded with 3 full Jerry cans as well as a 37" spare. I have scraped a decent amount of the powder coat off (not to fault the quality) but have yet to mark the bumper in any significant way. I have dropped onto the bumper with the weight of the rear hard enough to jam your spine, I have pivoted off one of the rear corners, I have backed into a rock wall fuel can holder first and drug the ass end up a rock face more than once.

If you have any doubts about the quality of this bumper, rest assured that it will outlast your cruiser.

Im sorry but I dont get why people suggest its more safer to have the spare carrier on the passenger side. From my experience, you dont get to choose which side you have a flat tire.

You want safe - get as far away from the traffic when changing a flat. :D You want better visibility - put it on the drivers side. Lean? I dont see a drastic difference with my 80. YMMV.

Maybe it has to do with pulling over to the right side of the road (for us in the states) to get on the shoulder when changing a flat or opening the rear hatch when parked on the side of the road?

Ditto. You'll still be facing traffic if you get a flat on the driver side of the vehicle.

It has nothing to do with what side you get a flat on. It's the direction in which the massive swing-out with spare tire will open. I prefer to have that thing swing towards the passenger side away from oncoming traffic.

X2. Visibility was the single most important in making my decision to put the tire on the drivers side. I have to see out of the back of the Cruiser every time I drive it. I very rarely ever have to fix a flat. Also, the lean can be fixed with a $10 spacer; the visibility can't.

Coming from an FJ Cruiser... my decision was not based on visibility as it is overrated in the FJC :D
