A few sets still available

Here is a non-bias potential customer point of view:
I was very interested in a set of these rock rails but I decide not to because I really wanted something that I can use as steps, more precisely the wife can use as steps.

As mr. nlxtacy mentioned Phil is a one man shop so he doesn't get huge discount on materials and shipping. Assuming steel is 3 times as much and shipping is twice as much for Phil the cost of of the sliders is around 150 shipped( steel, welding rods, primer, hardware and shipping). So the profit is around 200 bucks. Now it would take couple of hours of labor to make and 1 hour to pack and ship which equates to about 65 dollars per hour without counting R&D. Phil made a few sets so his volume is so small that there isn't anyway to reduce cost.

Even though 65 dollars per hour seems like good pay but that's only if he can do that 8 hours a day and day after day. So it is obvious Phil isn't getting rich doing this, in fact I was bitching about Phil not willing to spend 100 buck on a set of O2 sensors to make his 80 run better in another thread.

I have few friends in the import business and cost of the goods shipped to port of Los Angeles is at the very most 1/10th of the actual retail price and yet retailers gross margin is still only about 20%(in a good year) because people gots to pay rent and eat. At the end of the day Phil need to charge highest amount people are willing to pay for a product to make a buck.it is simple economics and value.

Since it is Friday hope you are able to get a drink or two in and feel better by now.

I know Booger is being crucified here, but he's absolutely right in his claims. And Phil is also right; members should be smart enough to make the decision themselves. I would never buy these because I know what metal costs and know what it takes to make these shower curtain rods. But I can see the appeal for some. To each their own.

Remember, this is a TECH thread, not a for Sale Thread, so Booger did nothing wrong aside from rustling a few feathers. The people tossing out insults are more out of line.

Quit it, all of you, or the thread will get moved to chat. Please keep it tech.

Now you guys got a supermod involved. Don't make Mace angry, he gets meaner than I do

I cleaned up all the chat, keep it tech

Don't make me get out of my chair and spill my drink and have to come back and moderate again

There is obviously a difference of opinion on if it is worth it to pay to have them made. Foe some no and for some yes. Let us leave it at that

Just a quick note: i deleted my posts on my own accord, prior to moderation, out of respect for phil as this was turning into personal attacks instead of technical info.

Looks like having a life other then MUD I missed a bunch of good post.

I did get more interest and questions so below is the Readers Digest version of all the technical information on the construction of the Rails installed in this thread.

If you have a welder, pipe bender, chop saw, and have the metal working skills needed the info is below to help build your own.

A great alternative to heavy duty sliders for the guy looking for good protection with a stealth look at a low cost. We have been trail testing and refining our Rock Rails for the last 2 years.

Advantages over the normal heavy duty slider –

Light weight ~25lbs a set
High clearance 2”+ more clearance then heavy duty models
Nothing to get hung up on
Stealth look
No more dirt/mud on your pant leg or her dress getting in or out
Wife approved!
Price point about 1/3 of heavy duty sliders

Disadvantages over the normal heavy duty slider –

No steps
No pivoting off rocks
No cat protection
Not designed to come crashing down on rocks but strong enough to support the vehicles weight.

Do keep in mind that while these offer great protection in a lighter weight and high clearance friendly design, these are NOT a replacement for $1000+ sliders and do not offer the same protection of heavy duty sliders sold by Slee, Metal Tech and others.

Bottom line if you hit the Rock Rail once installed they just paid for themselves in savings on body damage.

They mount to the pinch weld in 5 location. They are primed 100%, prior to welding, then welded, and spot primed where welded. Mounting studs are tapped into the steel then Rosette welded. All metric 10.9 grade hardware with serrated flange JIS nuts. Steel construction tubing is .090 thick. End are plugged using plastic plugs.

Rails come primed and do need to be painted. Krylon Satin is a perfect match for black powder coat. We recommend spray over powder for easy touch up.

Tools required for installation-
Drill
Drill bits
Masking tape
Pencil
12MM wrench

Estimated installation time for the average guy 1 hour

Thanks to many for your positive feedback.
Any info or questions you may still have feel free to PM me.

I dunno, but if every random guy wants to sell an 80 product this place is sure gonna get constipated with kiosks. Hard enuf to digest the emblem guy who rambles on about how his 3d printer ran out of material a dozen times or blew a fuse for the bazillionth...

Less selling and more building/wheeling please.

Your point is well taken. This thread followed rules when it was tech and a review of the product and other talking about how they liked it. I did not notice there was an order post embedded until now.

The way it is suppose to work is you create a thread in the classifieds and you can post a link here, but orders shouldn't be part of this thread

I'll PM Phil.

I appreciate your opinion booger weldz! Regardless of the product, a well informed decision can only be made if a person is well informed. I see you are role modeling good 'mud behavior! I'm glad to see you take the high road. You have demonstrated, "that a wolf need not fret, over the opinions of sheep!" That quote is from a coach I heard during the run-up to the final four...seems somewhat appropriate here. By saying that, I do realize I am calling some 'mudders sheep. So be it, let the sheep get all fired up, I know the wolves will not fret :) Regardless, my purpose is not to alienate or divide or insult, rather I just want to show my support for booger weldz. Seems like, as a group, we would be better off seeking out opinions from journeyman welder/fabricators...instead of shunning them.

Very good points and I think we all agree the points booger brought up was very valid. Had booger exercised just a little restrain in his wording I think the mods wouldn't of have stepped in.

Again great points by booger and valid points by everyone aside from the emotional attacks. Didn't know the tube wasn't welded shut which I agree it should be and phil needs to make a buck to make it worth while.

Now that the dust has settled I still think Phil's rock rails are a good alternative to traditional sliders and yes it could use some improvements(constructive criticism).

Phil has removed the order portion of his posts. Lets get back to tech related to this topic.

Last thing i wanted was to piss off people id like to embrace as Efriends and loose potential answers to my own tech questions...

Tech: a caved in rocker panel is almost impossible to fix and even the most experienced body man will cringe if you show up with a bashed in door sill. Put whatever you can down there to protect your pride and joy. Once its taken a good hit, its pretty much permanent.

Rather then fight the masses my design team suggested we adapt to the claims of weakness in our products. Even though after 2 years and 1000's of off road miles of testing. On some tougher trails many 80 owners my never see. We have found 80's equipped with Rock Rails give a level of confidence not found with other Rock Rail manufacture, making what some would consider difficult obstacle a breeze equipped with Rock Rails.

On test vehicle (Rock Rail equipped) on Hells Gate making a difficult obstacle to some look effortless.

We have had no failure or problems with our first prototype design were electrical conduit was used. We upgraded to .90 tubing because our design team though Rock Rails with E.M.T. stamped on the Rails would come across to some like a curtain rod or the likes. The plastic plugs did keep us within the standard of providing a light weight design though. In our defense the plugs are made of high quality ABS plastic import from Malaysia...so my supplier tell me.

To address the plastic plugs we came up with a solution we are really excited about.

:rimshot::rimshot::rimshot:Rock Rail Lights

Remove the plastic plugs and install a LED MR-11 lamp. LED lighting offer no heat, only 2.5 watts per light, and weather proof. With all 4 lights (providing you go all the way) is about 1/2 the wattage of a tail light lamp:clap:Lamps carry a 15,000 hour life making them last a life time.

The location from our testing shows no concerns with loosing light output from dirt and mud. A problem commonly seen with many other rock light.

The soon to be available upgrade accomplish several things:

No more plastic plugs:bounce:
Rock lights to attract more hard core guys
Lights can help you locate your 80 series at the mall with the optional remote.:princess:
Another feature with the remote (at no addition cost) is the ability to dim the lights for when setting the mode come down to getting some or not when you are out with your significant other when you dont have the advantage of a full moon night. (BTW full moon nights only happen once a month IIRC) Some guys will come to appreciate the need for addition light on the occasion you need to find the right place to put your junk.:moon::eek: This alone can make them wife approved for many.

I look forward to many other uses you guys will come up with.

The fit is tight (the way some of us like it) and rubber mounted to absorb to pounding of most difficult off road condition.

First of all, how does your design team come up with these ideas? I can see the benefit of seeing what's under your truck like the snakes from the last trip or skunks.

While camping, walking away from the camp fire to your unlit truck, hit the remote and instant locator in the sea of 80 series here. I really like the addition, especially in the desert southwest.

Awesome addition.
