Here are pics on the LX. As previously stated, for the LX you need to remove the bolts that lay vertically just on the outside of the pinch weld.
If these are not removed the rails will not lay flush against your vehicle.
I "dremeled" the plastic trim that hung on the weld....I cut off about a half of an inch, just shy of the bolt holes that I had previously removed.
As you see from the pics, the new rock rail takes place of the bolts and firmly secures the plastic trim to the underside of the vehicle.
(Also, the plastic trim is also secured from the factory with glue....u could remove all the bolts and never mount the rails and the trim would stay in place)
Other than removing the bolts and dremeling, the install is the same is the LC, I believe.
I painted mine semi-gloss black with Krylon. I applied a couple of layers. The black matches the black of my Slee bumper.
Due to my lack of measuring skills, I ended up pounding on the rails with a rubber mallet in order to secure them into the mounting points.
The paint was unaffected and off course, it didn't affect the rails.
As far as placement of the rails on the pinch weld....on the passenger side, the first one I installed, I didn't properly line up the rail in the front of the vehicle....Keep in mind, the reason the rails flare out in the front, is because the punch weld also flares out.
I was working from the rear of the vehicle forward, and realized this after all the holes were drilled and I couldn't figure out why the rock rail wouldn't lay flat against the weld.
Instead of re-drilling all of my holes 1/2" back, I, as stated above, used my rubber mallet and began tightening the bolts. With a little tightening, the weld bent and flushed up against the rail.
Lesson is, line up the front of the rock rails against the flare in the pinch weld.
As for the driver side, it went smoothly. Again, trim the plastic, remove the bolts, line up with flare, mark your holes, and mount.
The rails are stout, lightweight and a great alternative to spending 1k on ....especially in my case were I rarely see rocks, the few times that I do, I like the thought that I have some protection.
A little word on Phil....after I ordered the rails, Phil sent me a PM and said he wanted to call me and answer any questions and help in anyway with the install. The next day he gave me a ring and we spoke for 36-minutes!! (I looked at my phone as I was hanging up as I was so impressed that he took that much time out of his day to help me.)
The install of the rails took up the first 10 minutes....the next 25 I picked his brain about various cruiser questions/advice.
GREAT customer service!!
Overall I am very happy, glad I bought these, didn't go "unprotected," and I didn't drop 1k.
(Notice the stealthness)
In of the above pics....any "bubbling" chunks, or drips in the pic is water dripping off from the carwash and mud that didn't wash off.
