If the tube is rusted near the top in the tank, fuel will likely not make to the carb. I'm sure you could attach some 1/4 or 3/8 ID copper tubing to make a new one. Low temp silver solder or gas tank epoxy puddy

It is just a suction tube - don't go wild with a wire wheel etc. It was tedious - if you have evaporust - that would take some of the labor away - then can do fine sanding if needed - IE Emory cloth. and yeah like @charliemeyer007 said - make a different one and get hose to fit the end - those ends are 7.6 mm ID for hoses.

I just started putting my hoses back in last weekend (tank too). These 79+ tanks are a PITA to get in.

EDIT: Do you smoke or know someone who does - have a smoke machine? - plug one end and put some smoke in the other. My friend in KC did that with my carb - not going to tell you what he was smoking, but it worked. we found the problem.

Another option:

I would try cleaning it up first like already suggested. Soak it in vinegar for a while and see what you have.
I tied them early Dec as they said they have it and 5 days later got email saying they don't and canceling it...

I caught that and updated the link to a different vendor. Has anyone tried the fj60 pickup, it’s available and looks similar.

without putting them side by side, I'm thinking the 60 one isn't long enough. the 40 tank is deeper/taller than a 60 tank

there are good used ones available.

Well I’ll try to use this

Wow - somehow, I think the patient will pull through.

with the sending unit, my connects were corroded, pins/wire brittle, etc - redoing the wire harness - will post picts on my thread over the weekend after install etc of the new wiring. Got the connectors from coolerman - but oddly enough not for the fuel tank, just worked out that way

Also just wondering, how essential is running the fuel evaporator/separator charcoal canister? I briefly read about its purpose. Today’s fuel is much cleaner than the 70s/80s was.

my canister is not hooked up. I am desmogged. Sometimes I think I should try and hook it back up. I've read if you do a snyper, it is a must.

I'm running sbc's and have capped off the plumbing for the tank and charcoal canister. I will probably hookup a canister in one of my 40's, because most of the tubing is intact except for the canister. I will add its vent to the air cleaner housing. I don't believe the canister effects the running of the engine. It's an environmental thing, similar to the pcv valve and a radiator overflow/expansion tank. There are other smog things that screws with how the engine runs, these aren't one of them.

Also - I don't think there is a wrong answer to put on tank then the body, or body then the tank.

The biggest pro I see having just installed my tank - the cross member - have to angle the tank to get around the cramped space if tank goes on second - Setting all straight down on the frame with tank pre/installed may be easier.

if you have tub on rotisserie (or other way to invert), I would say tank first.

It is awkward and takes 2 people (unless you have good things to brace tank while you get straps on). if you can't flip the body somehow and install tank. if you don't have a lift - even more awkward on your back.

The difficulty I encountered is that I could not install the straps in the pin locations first, let them hang, and secure the other side after tank lifted into place - didn't work that way for me. Strap would not drop all the way down to provide enough for tank to slip in and up - so Rus and I put tank in place and one held tank and other then installed straps.

I don't know if clear.

Edited to complete last statement.

I’m replacing my reverse switch right now… and can see underneath and all the things I forgot above.

My propeller shaft was off when putting tank on. Another reason to put on and drop in with tub.

Forgot, I had the rear shaft off off when installing tank
