I have just visited the Alu-Cab factory in Cape Town.Waiting for some feedback on some changes that I would like, if possible ...

I would like the roof to be less square and ho rather follow the classic Troopy body lines for a start. Then I would like the front of the roof to taper downwards like the OEM roof did, basically paralel to that piece above the front door - I realize this can only be done very slightly as the limiting factor is the fact that the bed needs to be flat, even for your feet but I do think a tapered look will look more like the OEM Troopy look ?

some thing like this ?

I can see your point, and I'm sure the Alu-Cab guys will do what they can to accommodate your request. You have the advantage of being in ZA to ask the questions. I ordered my top through the Australian agent and had less opportunity to discuss modifications first hand. I did get the chance to hang around the workshop to watch the conversion being done and would recommend doing that in the Cape Town workshop if you go ahead with Alu-Cab.

Hallo Alan,

I have exactly the same RTT than you, and it was worth every cent!!! Where have you gotten those "bubbles" on your front drivers' and passenger windows from? Troopy's are not readily available in South Africa, so parts are very hard to come by :(

Your fitout in the back is also very impressive!

Hello Troepadoer,

Snap!!!! I was just away for the weekend in the Troopy, and I agree, the conversion was worth every cent.

I envy you your garage door height, my garage door is too low to get the Troopy in. We live in an apartment block, so there is no chance of remodeling the building just to get the car off the street.

The "bubbles" are wind deflectors and are standard Toyota parts. Here in Oz they are very common, a few after market supplies also make them. I'm sure Toyota ZA would be able to supply them if you showed them the photos and asked them to search the parts catalog.

Thank you Alan!

I will take the photo to Toyota this afternoon, and ask them to search for these deflectors ;) The garagedoor thing was an absolute blessing! The Troopy goes in with exactly 1cm to spare. I can also only get into the left side, as the floor of the garage slopes upward to the right. My husbands Camry thus have to sleep on that side. :)

Hello Mervo, it has got to be possible. The 80 series roof doesn't slope down between the A and B pillar, and so there isn't a lot of metal above the rain gutter to leave when the roof is cut off for the flip top to bond to, and that may make a difference. It can't hurt to send Alu-Cab an email and ask them.

I shot them a message a while back and Jeremy said the 80 series was too small for their roof, which is certainly possible. That and because the 80 series isn't as popular in SA so there probably isn't the market for it.

However, since we don't have the 70 series in the states we have to make due with what we have. Campteq went away indefiniely which was an option, but no longer.

Oh well, we can keep hoping, wishing, and praying.

That's kind of an odd answer given that Alu-Cab make a flip top for the Land Rover Defender, which I think is smaller than the 80. I expect the reason has more to do with not having too many potential customers.

Interesting. I didn't realize the Defender was smaller.

However, I wholeheartedly agree, the market potential is probably much, much, smaller.

Here is a similar response, on Instagram, from them when I commented on the roof of a troopy.

Hello Mervo, I'm guessing but I think the Defender is narrower and maybe slightly shorter. It's hard to tell without the two side-by-side to eyeball them, but I know that most vehicles designed in the late 1940s were pretty narrow by today's standards. As I'm typing this I'm half expecting a LR owner is about to flame me and put me in my place with a scathing correction.
