Amazing looking rig!
Congrats on all your work you put into it.
Hope to see you at some cars and Coffee events in the future.
Well done 👍🏽
Thank you! Which ones do you attend? I recently went out to Sundaysteeloc in my s2000 and the turnout was great. Also, I am planning on taking it to jccs and toyotafest this year.
Remove the harness from the clamp for the steering column/turn signals assy and move to the side, then you can reach straight up to speedo cable and disconnect. Super easy. Same for reassembly
That's some great info right there, thank you! I want to catch up to you with all the cool oem tools eventually 🤞

The radio has arrived. Some assembly required lol...

I have done Griffith park, El Segundo, and the OC Quarantine run and the other one I don’t know the name of it but it is on Magnolia.

Holy crap this radio SUCKS to setup. It took me 2 hours to modify the brackets and set the faceplate and knob depth.

I’ve read up on how to mount this but there was only one guy who fabricated his own brackets. I figured I can take a swing at the side mounts that come with the radio.

What I did was bend them right at the same point it meets the faceplate so that it would slide into the dash. Then I flipped them from left to right (they are side specific according to restrosound). Once I did that the two points lined right up with the factory side mount holes!

The door speaker wiring originally jumped from the a pillar to the door with no boot. A quick search on Amazon and I found these boots for $8 each. After that I wired and mounted the door speakers.

The original radio plug has the 12v acc & ground, so all I needed to source was a constant 12v. I ended up tapping the cigarette lighter and then it was time to test it out.

The led lights on the gauge cluster, dash pad & heater controls are so much brighter! The new radio sounds great and all I need to do is to put the dash back together.

I have never found music in an FJ40 to be something that was pleasurable. Especially with the single stock speaker. Seeing those holes in your doors makes me cringe.

They were there already, and I love a good sound system in all my vehicles. At some point I’ll add a small subwoofer and amp to finish it up.

I got it all buttoned up. I made the job way harder than it needed to be, but the polished dash and hardware look so good. There was an unknown switch under the brake warning light. So I removed it and put the microphone there for hands free calling.

So I’m having an issue with the speedometer not working. So far, the cable was removed and lubed, then I drill tested it and the cluster worked. The last thing I’m guessing would be whatever that cable screws into on the transfer case side. Any thoughts?

Edit* I’m thinking it may be the speedo driven gear. I’ll have to pop it out and see what’s going on with it.

How does that location work for the microphone? I never installed mine because I couldn’t find a place I liked, but your set up looks pretty slick. May copy you if it picks up your voice without too much background noise.

RetroSound radio install

Thanks for sharing/doing that. It’s waaay down on my list but I’ll definitely refer back to it when/if I go this route.

I popped out the speedo driven gear and the plastic teeth looked fine, re-assembled it and the speedo started working. I have no idea what would have changed from simply removing and installing the gear, but I'm glad that's over with lol.
Did you disconnect and reconnect at the speedo during that time?

No problem! It's one of my favorite mods aside from the lift kit

Last time I tested out the speedo after lubing the cable and re-installing the cluster but it didn't work. Then I drill tested it at the transfer case side and the speedo moved, so I knew the cable and cluster were good. That's what led me to messing with the driven gear, but I still don't understand how I got it to work again lol. I disconnected the cable from the driven gear, removed the driven gear and the teeth/gear all looked fine. So I just put it back together and decided to test it out of curiosity. That's when it decided to start working like normal.

These last bits of rusty pieces were driving me crazy, so I took it all apart to refinish. While I’m in there I’ll be swapping in a mishimoto aluminum radiator, and replacing the worm gear clamps with oe style wire clamps throughout the engine bay. Then I can swap in the new front grill emblem and put it all back together.
