Thanks guys. I got a few hours to work on it yesterday. I had my #1 helper assist on pulling the transfer case:

I pulled the transmission as well and cleaned things up. 38 years of crud did not come off easily. The plan is to replace gaskets and seals and parking brake shoes.

I'm planning on doing the same on the engine. I don't have an engine stand, so that may wait until I install it on the frame.

It's always good to have willing helper.

How's the condition of the motor? does it need anything internal, now is the time. I'm sure you know as well, but Craig's List has engine stands from 50 to 100 dollars, sell it for the same when you're done.

Good Luck with it!

According to the PO, the motor is good. 116k miles. Compression #'s are 140, 140, 140, 135, 140 and 120, 1 thru 6 respectively. I'll probably pull the head and have a look while I'm replacing seals/gaskets. ACC gave it a clean bill of health along with a tune up and valve adjustment not long before I got it. I'll have to get an engine stand - thx for the craigslist tip. Here's a stupid question: Do I have to readjust the valves if I pull the head? I seem to remember being able to unbolt the valvetrain without messing anything up, but it's been a while.

I love having help from my little ones.

Incidentally, that's the same outfit I wear when I wrench!!!
