So I'm the lucky hatfieldcb's pig. I've been running around today trying to satisfy the needs of the man. Got it titled, insured, smogged and finally registered.

Smogging was a pain in the butt, It took forever because it kept saying the sample was diluted. I think there is a pretty big exhaust leak at the manifold. Gonna chop out a section, put in flex pipe and try to seal that up. I'm already tired of smelling like fumes after driving it :flipoff2:

Here are some pics of getting her butt sniffed at the AirCare Colorado up on 112th ave.

I hate that place up by the air port and jail. (hmmm how bad does that sound a jail right next to a jail? Quick get away any one?) That is why I am glad I moved into Larimer County. Just take it to a gas station and they can do it there. And if there is a problem just give the kid a couple of bucks and he should pass you. :D

Oh and welcome :flipoff2:

And the welcome I would expect.

It wasn't bad, just took a long time. I had a total brain-fart and got in the AWD line with the reasoning "something is popping from time to time up front, you never know if the t-case is fully disengaging. After getting to the front of the line I realized that regardless of what the t-case was doing, ensuring the hubs were unlocked would eliminate the front wheels from moving.

The best part was when the guy pulled it up and didn't even dyno it. So I've got this line of Audis, BMWs and Subarus all waiting on my junk to stumble through the test. For a moment I felt bad about wasting all of these other people's time but then I realized that any one of the door monkeys could have directed me to a differnt bay to pull into. Oh well. Not like I WANTED to smog a 1969 vehicle.

Ok I've got a couple of questions for you guys. Some background: The oldest vehicle I've ever owned was an 85, so I don't know what to expect out of a 69. Having said that...

1) Do all wiper motors suck a--, are loud and barely drag the wipes across the glass?

2) Is it possible to actually get the defroster to work?

3) For those who have converted to 4 wheel discs, how soft is your brake pedal? Does the thought of driving in rush hour traffic make your butt pucker up a bit? I know what I've got is a custom job, just wondering if the brake booster is poop or it needs to be re-bled or what.

4) Clutch, should it engage an inch or so off of the floor? What is the part interchangeability/availability of master and slave cylenders? Am I looking at a new clutch soon? Reccomendations on brand?

5) How loosey-goosey should the steering be? Lets compare it to 20 year old truck, should it be about the same, or really do these things feel like my dad's old tractor? Should I look at replacing TREs, PS boxes or steering linkage?

This should cover it for now. Anyone in CO know someone who would do a good job of putting a new headliner in? Mine currently looks like the carpet pad from an abandoned house and the female components of the house aren't really stoked on it.

I'm digging the 55! The funny thing is after driving it for 2 days, I hopped in my 88 4runner tonight and that thing feels like a sports car compared to the piggy. Its going to be a labor of love...

1) wiper motors are generally pretty stout, and they shouldn't make noise.
2) does your heater work? if so, then you probably are missing your defroster hoses.
3) my 4 wheel discs in my 69 suck, but it does stop. The only problem is rear bias. I'd lean towards air in the line.
4) slave and master cylinders go bad often, and they do not last 37 years. Replace both. If your clutch works and doesn't stutter on hills, don't bother with it, just swap in new hydraulics.
5) Your 55 should be "loosy goosy". The stock steering boxes wear out, a lot. Look at the steering box while you move the wheel back and forth. They are adjustable, but are usually worn past the point of adjusting. Also, one in mint condition is very hard to find. TRE's and such wear, center arms wear and loosen, and the drag link is non servicable. Have a buddy move the wheel back and forth while looking at all these parts.

Have fun with the money pit.

Except this Pig does not have stock steering. Chris put FJ60 PS on it...

I never drove Chris' Pig, but I did put 60 series PS on my 40. It is not loosy goosy. You need to check u-joints in your column (replace w/ driveshaft u-joints out of 1rst gen Corrolla - I kid you not!), then check the box itself. My bet is that the rag joint at the pitman arm is trashed - this can be adjusted, and snugged up using the 2 penny trick! Check that and get back to us!

Oh, Ron at Rocky Mtn Cruisers might be a resource for you, where do you live?

Hey thanks guys for the replies! I was out of town the last week.

I'm thinking the steering shaft is having issues. I'll have to get out and look at that when the 4+ inches of snow start to melt off, welcoming me back to Colorado.

I think a good weekend cleaning some stuff up will make this thing a little more streetable. As streetable as it will ever get, anyway.

Pablo, I'm out near DIA. Chris told me about Ron, and I think I have his number. I'll see what I really need once I get my head in there and take note of what is really going on.

On a side note, the first time I showed the woman a pig she flatly said "no way" but after we saw it and took it for a spin she seemed to warm up to it. Now that it has been chilling the driveway for a couple of weeks, I think she is actually proud of it. I think with enough exposure anyone can see the inner beauty of the pig!

Not sure which shaft ou mean... Do yoiu mean the column itself? Intermediate shaft? Like I said, check the u-joints. There are two bearings on the column:

I am not sure how Chris joined the 60 PS box to the 55 relay rod. I used a 60 series relay rod mated to 40/55 series rod. Check the joint that meets the pitman arm:

I'm going to check out the rag joint and generally give it a once over, while taking it up left hand tomorrow. I'm making my buddy with an 85 runner who got me into all of this stuff go run it with me.

Does anyone have any rule of tumb u-bolt torque specs for the leafs? I know this has some AALs in there and what not to get the lift, but I just want to tighten that stuff down to make sure it is good to go.

I'll make sure to get some pics!

Well the trip up Lefthand was great! This thing was willing to go over anything I had the balls to point it at. Lockers and the Toybox are the shiznit!

First up: Did a little remodeling in the rear quarter pannel. That will buff out.

Stretching her legs a bit:

Stuffit! Apparently I get a little tire rub on the front fenders.

If you've got a body on your rig that you remotely care about, think twice before following trucks that look like this:

And finally, she sure has a fat ass. I'm pretty sure my rear tires weren't on the ground here:

Well a brief update, since it has been a while.

I took the fam out snow wheeling with my piggy back in December. Had a great run, went with some buddys off of colorado4x4.org to Rollins pass. We just about summited, however close to the top the snow was drifted too badly to make it.

Sadly, my junk develped a stutter on the way up, which was resolved by gearing down and essentially reducing the load on the engine. Well, by the time I had gotten back to Boulder, the stutter had turned to bucking and any load on the engine would bog it out. AAA to the rescue.

The happy ending to the story is that I was the only one who didn't get stuck, and I pulled out a couple of guys who had gotten stuck, even with the engine stutter. You gotta love a toybox!

I had crafted up a winch mount out of some 12"x6" box tube and a plasma. My warn 8K sits nicely now up front, and I pulled off that bent up bumper in favor for the straight one that Chris had thrown in with the deal. The winch mount is still unpainted, rusty and ugly, but it worked.

So about two weeks after that trip, the blizzards hit here in Denver and the pig sat in a cocoon of snow for 3 or so months while life went on. The snow melted off and I decided to go with changing out the fuel filter, thinking the easy fix might get me the win. Well no such luck. I did grab a cheapo autozone filter, but no go.

During this time, the clutch fluid had decided to leave the system. There were no obvious leaks, but it was greasy around the slave cylender, so I decided to start that bug hunt there.

So the beast runs when I pour some gas in the carb, but dies when that runs out. Since I changed the filter with no improvement and fuel does indeed come from the lines, meaning it doesn't seem totally plugged from the tank, I just have to assume the pump has crapped out. I opted to stick with the mechanical pump.

A quick order from MAF and I've gotten a new pump, clutch slave cylender, a braided brake line to replace the OEM rubber clutch line, a new OEM fuel filter and to help clean up some of the leaks on the old 2f, I got a new valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. Not looking forward to replacing the latter of those...

It looks like I might get time on Sunday to do the work. Any tips on the oil pan gasket? How much oil do these things take?

I have already deduced that the fuel pump will be interesting due to the OBA compressor that Chris installed (which is still sitting at 40+ PSI since December). Do I need to drain the oil before changing the fuel pump or does it sit high enough to not have to worry about it?

Pics to follow after the weekend. I've got to show off my booty-fab winch mount and the obligatory clean parts going onto a filthy engine.

Woohoo got my silver star!

So for now here is a picture of my booty-fab winch mount. I also installed the non-bent bumper that Chris threw in with the sale of the pig.

This afternoon, horrific views of my home-bent clutch hard line, fuel pump and filter installs, clutch slave and soft line (which is now a braided brake line) and hopefully my new clutch master. Then finally since December, I'll be able to torture the neighbors by driving around.

Looking good.

I used Posers trick on the oil pan. apply rtv lightly between pan and gasket, gasket in pan, get some string, tie knots every other hole, get bolts started, cut string and pull out, start in the center of the pan on each side, tighten to where you can just see gasket moving out. Dont over tighten!

But only OEM 1 piece..
