Gorgeous build! Hopefully your son can be the outlier and not wreck his first vehicle...
Thank you for the compliment. I'm hoping for the same thing. He's a bit more conservative than his sibling, so I'm hoping for the best. Fortunately I'll have close to a half gallon of paint left over and seeing this rig is a combination of 2 totaled 60's, I'll be somewhat prepared to fix it. I did not plan to go this far on the build when I first started (lol) and I'm now thinking I may baseline the 80 I got last year and let him drive that one. At least that will be an option if he does not show it some respect for the 60.

Looks like great results painting.

I am curious though, you are painting in an open shop, open as in not a closed off area and it appears you have no exhaust set up. Are you not concerned with paint lingering airborn and then settling on everything in your shop, including the parts you just painted? Did you get much dust or other debris in your paint as it dried?

Also, body filler is not really meant to fill holes, any kind of holes. In fact it is not meant to be thicker than 1/16-1/8". I am not body guy but have worked in a body guys shop for two winters and picked his brain daily.

I think you are doing a great job so don't take my comments wrong.

Cheers

RMPO ... simmer down now.

Looks to be a great result for the intended purpose. if you shooting a show piece then probably a booth is needed. Awesome work brother

Great questions and I definitely understand the curiosity. I'm the first to admit that I'm learning quite a bit as I go. I did fill holes initially where I pulled some dents. We went back and welded them (drivers quarter). My oldest son called this one out and we decided to clean off the filler and weld them up. However I did not weld the pinholes in the windshield frame which I may regret down the road. The question about the dust is spot on. I have not had an issue until I did the multiple parts last week. I started shooting each coat at the hood and by the time I got to the other side of the shop to shoot the core support, the clear had flashed on the hood and I ended up with clear dust on top of the pretty finish. Fortunately this buffs out. I have two big fans in the gable end of my shop which does draw the air, but not at the volume I need when shooting clear. I believe your question was also around particles (dust/trash etc...). I do get some, but it's a lot less than one would think. I try to plan my painting around good weather days with low to no winds and I blow out the shop and cover other body parts with plastic. As for the other stuff out of my area of painting, I don't worry about paint sticking to it. All it does is lay on top of a thick layer of dust which has been covering everything in my barn from years of being idle. Would love to have a booth and may make one in the future. For now I have to depend on wet sanding/buffing. I appreciate the questions and I'm always looking for pointers.

Unless one is planning to "show" a truck rather than "use" a truck...the method used is appropriate.

One thing I've been struggling with is the buffing process. I would wet sand all the way to 2000 and still have sanding scratches. Well yesterday I stepped up to a more aggressive starting point.

then went to the medium (85) and then fine (82). Here's the end product...no more sanding scratches.

I'm very happy with the results :)

The good news is I got the front clip on this weekend.

the bad news is I can't get the hood/drivers fender to line up correctly. Big mistake on my part not bolting this front clip a 100% before going to paint. This core support and drivers fender came off the same 60 out of a salvage yard. I knew it had been hit previously, but lined up good on the donor vehicle. The core has a slight tilt back on the drivers side. I have a few options which will cause me to have to paint another support. Will mock it up 100% before I do paint again. Here are some other shots with the hood and fenders.

I wasn't busting his balls, I think he took my post right.

I was asking because I will be painting in a non-booth environment myself. I seal off a bay in my shop but don't have exhaust and it is by no way as clean as any booth.

Cheers

Was not taken the wrong way. I appreciate the interest and am glad to pass along what worked and did not work as I go through this process. I do know if your willing to paint in pieces, then you can paint in any type of room. Feel free to reach out to me with any future questions. Thanks.

My plan worked out. We cut two bad cores and spliced the good halves together. It fits like a glove.

the ironic thing is if you look at the start of this build thread, you'll recognize where these two halves came from. The white is from the 87 rollover that I'm using the frame, vin etc...from. The blue side came with the body I'm using today. Kinda ties it all together. The bad news is I have to paint it again. But I do enjoy shooting the paint :).

alright...it's been a while since I've worked on this rig. Work is getting in the way and we helped McGuire get settled in at school. I did paint the Core support and also redid the hood. Had to fix a few dings I missed the first go round. Spotted with some color and cleared it again. Started putting it back together today. I may be in the minority, but I'm struggling with MUD via the Internet. I've used the phone app 99.9% of the time. It's not available anymore and the internet version seems foreign. Traveling all week for work, but looking forward to next weekend. At this point it's exciting cause everything I put on is clean and new looking. Once I get it running/stopping, then I'll tackel the doors.

@CenTXFJ60 - That paint looks phenomenal. I would be ecstatic to have something like that on my FJ60. Really good work!

Let me get this straight...you're juggling/planning to juggle working on/completing 3 fj60's...and an 80....are you going to sleep or eat ever?
Love that blue paint choice.

Thanks for the post. Truth be told...I'll most likely never get to all the projects I have. I still have domestic projects in the shop that have been in line way before the Cruisers showed up. My goal is to have plenty for me to do along with my boys. It's a sick addiction, but I can't pass up good project candidates.

I have not been doing much work on the Frankenstien build, but do have a some updates. I'm one of those that depended on the MUD App and since it went down, I've been struggling with the Internet version. I use my phone 99+% of the time. Anyhow, the cruiser is running, but needs some brake work and the exhaust hooked up. Next stage will be to get the doors painted and then start rebuilding the interior. I've created a bit of a delay as I picked up a 62 last month. Big thanks to Jeff Monroy who lives on the other side of the lake from me as he put my brother on this opportunity. I'm not into 62's, but my brother wants it so I bought it since it was 15 miles from my house. Unfortunately his better half is giving him grief and won't let him take it until he sells his 03 duramax. Since I laid the cash out for this ride, I need to get it running and in his hands. It's an original clean (rust free) 174k 1990 model. Been parked since 2006 due to a kickdown cable issue in the Trans. Hopefully my brother and I can get this going quickly. Back to my build...here are some recent pics with the front end coming together. Well screw it...I can't upload pics via my phone. I miss the App. Will email pics to my laptop and post another update
