Don't have time at the moment but Ill dig some photos up from the swap in a few days.
~Wiring is the worst part of it, I spent hours upon hours on the couch digging through FSM pages and watching movies while, cutting and pulling wires
~Exhaust is routed down and under the tranny
~I used a W56 with a W59 Bellhousing/Marlin Dual Ultimate Crawler/ SC is on the drivers side
~No body lift is needed
~Engine mounts need to be cut and rewelded (no biggie) Tranny mount ended up in the same spot in my rig
~For Power Steering I use the new pump with the old box

Best advice I can say is get the newest low miles 2/3RZ you can find. Even if you end up spending a bit more for it, its well worth it. I picked one up with 14k on the clock, I think to have a bit over 22K now. Been up and down the coast this year a few times and on countless offroad trips. The motor is fast and quite, depending on driving style I get mid 20's for MPG's. Did some kayaking and surfing a few hours south over the weekend, did 75 with gear and kayaks with out a problem.

Nice!
I've decided that this swap will be my 25th birthday present to myself, leaving me three years to budget for it, and get the hardware together.

Any additional info, when you get the chance, will be appreciated.

Some notes of interest from the Marlin thread

-need a 2WD T100 oil pan (and dipstick/tube, etc parts) to clear, or hack up 3RZ 4x4 pan
-2001+ engines have 4 coil pack, and moved the engine fuse block to engine bay (making wiring easier)
-like lowtideride said, only need the W59 bellhousing as it bolts to W56 (which may save you from modifying any drivetrain crossmember or drivelines.. don't know how this matches non-W56 drivetrains

So to me, the biggest issues are
-fabbing motor mounts (can weld the block part of 3RZ to 22RE mounts and nearly be there.. some one MC has pics on their build)
-routing exhaust with dual cats
-wiring, and with the newer motor, most work seems to be getting tach and gauges to work (there's a resister you can add to the SR5 tach)

The other motor difference of note is 3RZ has balance shafts in the 3RZ; 2RZ has none.

Thanks Esh, that was another consideration, the gauges.
I was thinking about getting another first-gen cluster, and setting the Taco gauges into its body.
Do you need the 2WD T100 oil pan if the rig in question is non-IFS?

Does anyone know the price for this particular conversion?
Including labor and who does it here in Cali?

Where are you located is important.. S.F. Bay area wise,

Call Yodaman or Toy Connection.

Yodaman: 707.586.7840 Santa Rosa

ToyConnection: 408.988.4040 San Jose

So-Cal, call YotaMasters

YotaMasters 951.279-0220 Corona

BTW, seen these yet? 2/3RZ Conversion mounts..

I'm going to have to get a set just in case ....

do the swap. then do a writeup

i have always wanted to do it.

for many years a guy i know swore by 22RE's then a few years after the swap he swore by the 3RZ never gonna go back

any update on this? I am looking into this option too.

So I did this swap way back in 1999. Ya that long ago. I used a Tacoma as a donor and strongly recommend to anyone to do the same. A 4Runner will work too. But if you have some fab experience or none but aren't afraid then just drop the dash from the donor into the other vehicle.
I used the the AC, blower and heater cores with the Taco Cross bar to mount it all to and even got the air ducting to line up.

On Marlins board Im TacoRunner.

The W56 is behind the 22RE the W59 is behind the 3RZ the bellhousings will allow you play musical tranny's, go get your self the 2WD T100 oil pan from the same motor, dont forget the pick up tube and dipstick. After that plug the wiring back into itself and see ya later.

I was wondering, could you not get away with wiring the ecu to fire as I did on a conversion last year?

Three wires to the iginition from ecu, only thing I could see not making work would be the tack?

Rob

I did speak to Cliff at Toyota Only Swaps last week and they can provide the wiring harness. You need to send it to them. Or, you are not that far so you could go there and have them wire it too.
