Camshaft bearings look untouched. Tiniest bit of wear on the front most one.
Interesting. So it looks like oil pressure was fine, but there was some dirt going through it. Have you opened the oil pump?

Not yet the stupid screws keep stripping out on me. I'll have to fiddle with it tomorrow.

Just in case it helps, they are a snug fit with Phillips No.3 and one of those old hammer impact drivers can be helpful. They have threadlock on so a bit of heat might help too.

Technically those screws are probably JIS-3, very similar to PH3 but different enough to cause issues on really tight fasteners. Vessel makes quality JIS impact drivers and bits.

Grind about 3mm off the tip of a #2 phillips head bit, and gently rattle them out with a cordless impact driver.

Screws are JIS, but grinding a #2 phillips bit will give it a better purchase in the JIS screws.

So the head, block, cam/crank, and a few misc parts that needed to be cleaned (oil cooler pieces, sump, etc) all went down to the local engine machine shop today.
20231027_100603.jpg

I put everything in nice organized boxes with tags for them. Those guys were pretty cool, I also left them a copy of the 3L FSM with some tabs on all the required specs.

Block and head won't need anything serious as long as all the measurements in FSM check out. Just a good cleaning.

The real question is how it will go with the crank and rod #4. Another rod isn't too bad like 150 bucks on Partsouq.

I am planning to order a bunch of different stuff from Partsouq, which one of you fellows recommend. My question is, do they have a warehouse in the U.S.? What kind of shipping times can I expect? Their website gives a 5-7 day estimate via DHL but I am skeptical.

If anyone has experience ordering toyota parts from them in the U.S., I'd like your input.

Must feel good to get it off to the shop.

I have ordered parts from Partsouq many times. They only operate in the UAE, no presence in the US. For me in Brunei (DHL comes via Singapore) it is very fast, maybe 2-3 days. Partsouq are just an intermediary though and must order from suppliers, which takes a few working days. If you are ordering Toyota items from Partsouq then you have a good chance to get them (80 - 90 %) but if ordering non genuine parts like Taiho engine bearings, it's a real lottery. The most annoying is when the 'big' item in your order is out of stock and they send the little bits and only erfund you a fraction of the shipping costs. Partsouq is almost completely automated and has zero flexibility. Frankly, I would go with Amayama (but pay attention to which warehouse you are ordering from) as they have a better customer interface.

I've ordered from Partsouq quite a few times, shipping times are excellent. Usually arrive in Montana in less than a week after placing the order. In my experience they are usually cheaper for parts and shipping than Amayama or Megazip, but I have had a couple occasions where one of the parts I ordered wasn't in stock, so they simply left it out of the shipment like @Eurasiaoverland mentioned. Otherwise I've been very happy with the experience, packaging is excellent and could likely survive anything the folks at DHL or FedEx could throw at it!

Either way they're gonna show up before the shop even touches your engine. Took my local machine shop 6 months to finish my engine

They told me two weeks. This place only does engines. They had about two dozen blocks in there when I dropped it off.

I'm hoping to have everything back in the truck by Christmas.

I'm picking up the block from the machine shop tomorrow. A few new developments.

Head and block came out great. Crank only needed 0.25mm (10 thousandths) ground off. Everything else polished up nicely.

I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Two huge boxes of parts are coming in from partsouq this weekend, as well as some other stuff from down under (HD Auto and All4x4Spares).

I ordered a turbo kit from Berrima diesel after much debate and talking with different people. Andrew answered a bunch of my questions on the phone. They told me two weeks to put the kit together and it was supposed to ship out today.
Instead I got this email:

So.... very disappointing.

On the fence about asking for a refund or just putting my engine back in and slapping the kit on whenever it does arrive.

If it really is a month... whatever I guess. But this might be one of those 6 month backorders where they tell me a month indefinitely til I give up.

I wish they'd told me right off the bat it wasn't something they had on the shelf. Kinda pisses me off

Generally good news besides the delay on the turbo kit. If it was me, I'd put the engine in OEM and run it that way for the time being. Just prep the turbo oil feed/drain for now so you don't have to piss with it later. Running OEM might give you a chance to get the engine running good and sorted before stressing it more with boost.

I think this is what I'm going to do. Today was a better day. All the parts arrived, somehow on the same day.

Whoohoo! Partsouq didn't disappoint. Packaged perfectly, everything labeled and bubble wrapped. I was impressed. I don't know how they got it all, and so quickly, but I'll be using them again.

The two boxes from Australia came in, albeit a bit beat up all the parts inside were fine.

Machine shop hasn't finished the crank yet. Probably will order bearings next week. I pulled a dumb move and bought the entire valvetrain except for guides. The guides were up on another diagram for some reason. Partsouq has them for 5 bucks. So head is waiting till next week also.

I'm going with an F type head gasket (165mm). Old one measures 158mm but it's also been compressed a bit. My guess is it was originally type F.

I ordered a gasket kit from AllFourx4Spares in Australia. They assured me it was good quality Japanese set, not cheap crap. I don't recognize the brand... anyone heard of this company? Toyota wasn't available for everything.

It also did include a 165mm head gasket in this kit, but if it's good not quality I'll order one from permaseal.

Nice haul of parts, mostly. I suspect 'Yanto' gaskets are Indonesian. No claim to be made in Japan. Plus anything with 'Top quality' written on it is usually anything but. I would not be putting these on an engine I wanted to keep. I would only ever use genuine gaskets:

Save money by buying OEM glow plugs (NGK) or possibly Japanese non-genuine filters, checking and re-using head bolts or valve lifters, not by buying no-name gaskets.

You should be able to get away with using the same thickness of head gasket as was originally fitted, but ideally piston protrusion is measured. The cut-out pattern of notches on the head gaskets tell you what thickness they are (were) - this should be in the FSM.

All three head gaskets are showing as being in stock at Partsouq:

If a genuine part is out of stock with Partsouq, I would order from Amayama in Japan

On a separate note, has the cause of bearing failure been identified?

Partsouq lists all the head gaskets under "substitutions". What exactly does that mean?

Same thing with all my bearings.

Same thing with all my bearings.
Toyota sometimes update a part for whatever reason (for forward-compatability with later parts, or cost cutting I would guess). If it's listed as a substitution, that means it can be used in the same application. So your head gasket -54072 will no longer be in production (nor -54070, -54071 I would guess) and -54073 is now the genuine head gasket for a 3L.

One of the oil passages was completely gummed up. This one specifically. Along with the oil banjo on cylinder 4 seen below.

20231024_192223.jpg

Oil that was in there was completely gone to s***. Here's a picture from an earlier post. This is taken during my first oil change after driving across the country on 20 year old oil. I bought the truck in Atlanta and drove it back to Idaho.
20231008_111546.jpg

All the bearings took a beating but they all took it like a champ. Only one that spun was cylinder 4 rod. So, the cause was chunky funky early 2000s engine oil and about 2500 miles of highway driving.

When I got it back I did all the routine stuff. Filters, engine oil, transmission xfer and diff oil. Grease the fittings. Etc. Then I put another couple thousand miles on it. Started making noise and I kept driving til it got alarming.

Wow. Looks like you had a rebuild coming anyway. I don't think anything you could have done would have escaped it.

Does anyone make new hardened cranks for the 3L? I've heard stories of turbocharged ones with high boost wearing out the cranks.
