You almost had me there. With a manual tranny you don't need it. The B-W from the ignition switch just goes straight to the ECU and provides a start signal.

The neutral start switch only allows power to the starter.

edit: The B-W wire from the start switch is spliced into the B-R wire. Both go to the ECU, but only receive power when the key is turned to start. It doesn't have power all the time.

It also seems to control the circuit opening relay initially and the start injector timer. It is wired into STA on teh ECU. So what happens if STA always has power? And if the circuit opening relay is not controlled by the other path (which it would not is the neutral switch is hard wired). It doesn't look like you can just ignore it.

Sure you can. It will only have power if you hold the key in the START position running the starter continuously.

Didn't see that.

Yes - it a very important 3FE tool. A lot of the FJ62/3FE guys are hard core micro brew beer snobs, so I had those 3FE poppers made up for the last 3FE Bash.

Maybe I'll get a batch for just up 3FE40 guys made up with "3FE-FJ40" on them. Anyone with a 3FE40 would get one for free!!:beer::beer::beer:

I'd gladly display one on my 40 somewhere. Randy should have my 3FE40 down there some time in the next months.

BTW, you have some nice rigs!

Brian

Can't wait Brian and I am sure the weather will co-operate this time. I should be slowing down after round up?!? But I will get it done! And Ps is a very nice luxury!! Yes I am lazy! 3FE 40 poppers for everyone!!! With a 3FE40

Also, what are the two pipes that run on the very bottom of the passenger side engine block? They look like fuel lines or lines to the charcoal canister. I removed them for now.

Nevermind... its the transmission oil cooler. Found it in the parts catalog.

as for the A/C - I plan to use vintage air in San Antonio. They have a second generation..might be third, system that is great.

Why vintage air? How much is that? I think I'll go with OEM air. I just like the look of it. Anyone happen to have a wiring diagram for OEM A/C?

You can't get the OEM anymore, and the Vintage unit looks the same ...

Tucker

Vintage Air does not look the same. I have seen many pictures. The CCOT unit actually looks pretty close. I can get the OEM stuff, used of course, complete minus the hoses (which I can make myself) and it will be 1/3 the price. I just need a wiring diagram to figure out how to use the FJ80 A/C amplifier with the older controls. I have the older control at home and it seems the amplifier is build into it. I also need to go back to my parts FJ80 and pull the rheostat since I forgot that.

I have the 80 series electrics manual:grinpimp:

I looked at a vintage air install today that Grant5127 had done. And talked with him a little about it. It was super clean and it seem that vintage air thought of everything. I wish I had taken some pictures. You remove your OEM heater box and the blower under the hood.

IMO - it frees up valuable space under the hood for some more goodies, and spreads the cold air across the entire dash, not just on the PS.

Grant also thought that the Vintage Air blower out preformed the OEM stock unit.

Grant - maybe you could get some picture of under the hood, firewall, and the dash unit? :)

I wondered what the PM was for :p

I need the A/C wiring for OEM FJ40 or BJ40. There are several manuals available for 1980 (I am just choosing 1980 because it had A/C):

Repair Manual CHAS/BODY SUPPLEMENT 98344 $9.57
Repair Manual CHAS/BODY SUP 98139 $9.60
Repair Manual 2F ENGINE 98126 $20.10
Repair Manual CHAS/BODY 98154 $45.84
Owners Manual 9763A $15.95
Electrical Wiring Diagram 98943 $13.78

Obviously the EWB might have it, but which repair manual would have A/C?

I have all the FJ80 and FZJ80 manuals... thank you TIS!

Here is the controller. It seems to have the A/C amplifier built into the box. Seems funny that you can cool with no fan or blow the fan without cooling... crazy Japanese!

True, it does spread out hte heat and cold. Not sure how much space it frees up. Isn't it only the blower motor that it removes? If you are going to use it, remember to sent 12V to the ECU when the compressor is engaged. The ECU will increase idle to prevent stalling.

Personally, I want 100% Toyota in my FJ40. It may be spread across 20 years, but still all Toyota. The A/C is more of a "yeah, I've got that too" thing. Something to keep me from boiling in the summer. I like the look of the original, plus I found a few that have the corner vents... stylish.

Vintage Air removes the front heater box also, and you can "T" off the lines and still use the rear.

Ok, we'll compare when we are done

How much will it run you anyway?

Update

THAT WAS A PITA!!! Sorry been slacking....Tied up at work and trying to get everything done. Here is the teardown pics and that rear exhaust manifold bolt had me thinking I would need to lift out the engine!! NOT!! :flipoff2:

Is that a federal emissions 3FE? I don;t see the EGR temp sensor. Mine has it. I am wondering if I can just not connect it back (I believe I have a federal ECU). Otherwise I would need to install the sensor into the EGR block off plate.

Any word on the A/C motor mount?

We can pretty all that up for mine and just bolt right in.......then mine becomes the core right?

Talked with Chris a minute ago and reassured him I'll be out there at some point soon, still trying to get a truck here in town to go get the Blue. Driving our farm truck/trailer from HOU makes no sense at these gas prices.

How's Read Ain't Dead looking?? Any space in the driveway yet?
