3 speed vs 4 speed question

Hey guys

I have a 72 parts car and it looks like someone did a 2F swap on it.

How do I tell if the transmission is 3 vs 4 speed? Is there a way to tell by serial number without shifting it? The shifter has a lot of play and it's hard to tell the pattern.

That would be a 3 speed.

You could also crawl under and look at it, 3 speeds are about 9" long and 4 speeds are 11" and longer.

The play is probably from the shift tower pins. If you're keeping the trans, SOR has a slick little kit for replacing them.

Another way to tell, without having to crawl underneath, is to look at the location of the shifter tower. The 3 speed is offset to the passenger side, while the 4 speed is centered.

You're exactly correct I just didn't know what to call them. One side is missing a pin
