About 3 hours on the lpb tonight.

Had some friends come out after work and give me a hand flipping the box upside down again. Between the 4 of us, it goes pretty good. Then I needed to cut some holes in the rear for the marker lights. I used the old box for a template for the holes. Basicly used a scrap piece of tag board and a marker and traced out the hole. Took some measurements so that it was in the exact same spot as the old box. Marked the area for the light and started cutting. You can see the end result...now a 78 box again.

Also on the 78 box there was a heat shield for the muffler. Had to get the dimensions for the holes off the old box, but marked and drilled for the heat shield. Then I spent a good half hour or so seam sealing up the edges and the bed. After that shot a good coat of Dp50Lf. Going to let that dry overnight and hoping to get up in the morning and get a couple coats of the SEM sauce shot in the morning...should go as planned.

Dang fine work Matt  Was it hard emotionally to cut those holes? :D It was sooo nice and smooth! Hehehe

Not to hard to cut...I knew it was coming for a long time. Pretty much making sure it is 100% 1978. :D

Thanks, Matt

Radd, do you hang the tack cloth to let some of the solvents and resins evaporate. I had a tack cloth leave a funny swirling fisheye deal on the underside of my hood one time. It all looked good, we wiped it with TecClean, fast evaporating cleaner, then tackclothed to get rid of all dust the preveious rag may have left and shot paint. The second and third coats, would not cover the resistant area.

I was also taught by a good paint and body guy, not to touch anything and to use rubber gloves. Hadn't tried unfolding the tack cloth beofore though.

Bucks thread and not too steal........ but I was told the tack cloth does leave a residue if used after opening right away?

I just got caught up reading the thread (7 pages behind :frown: )

As usual Matt, fantastic work! I like the bike a lot but the FJ45 does it for me the most. :) Everytime I look at this thread I pick up tips I will use later on in my own build. Everyone tells you to write a book or do a DVD on building FJ's but I think you could make a fortune teaching people time management skills! (Yes horribly boring job, but do it for two years, then retire to teaching folks how to work on Cruisers!)

 Here's to Matt for showing us what CAN be accomplished in a short time!

I like the lights! Are those the same as fj40 rear marker lights?

I'm a long way from actually doing it but I think I'll add some to my shortened LWB custom bed.

His time management skills basically revolve around not having kids and no TV. If those 2 were out of my life (And I would not want them to be!) then I woudl have tons of spare time.

- Not that I woudl use it wisely, but its just a thought. His skills and availability of tools and garage equipment help a ton as well!!

Managed to do some time management this morning for about 3 hours on the lpb.

Pics pretty much say it all, took about an hour to tape and about 2 hours to shoot that stuff. Still a little juicy in the pics, but turned out great. Hoping to let that dry for a couple days before flipping it back over. Going to temporarily throw it back onto the frame, might try to trailer it this weekend and get the exhaust done on Saturday...still have to call that guy. Might be able to talk a buddy of mine into helping me with 3 brake lines on Sunday, not sure on that yet.

I guess I can start to wet sand and then I'm going to have to pull the trigger on paint here pretty soon. Few other things I could do: Need to blast and paint all the hood latches, jack and handles...etc... But, would be nice to get it into paint and then get all the lights back in it and drive it?

That thing is butt-ugly.

Call me when it's finished and I'll haul it off for ya.............;)

Well I don't have kids either and my TV time is very limited due to my two jobs, but tools and builiding aside, he still seems to get more done in an hour than I can get done in a day!

Of course he is a bit younger than I am.... Yeah, that's it! NOW I feel better! :D

Looking good Matt. Are you going to have it ready in time for Cruise Moab?? :)

About 2.5 on the lpb this evening.

I had 3 of my buddies come out after work and give me a hand flipping the box back over. I even let them help me set it back onto the frame ;p Even the though the box is coming back off again for paint I bolted it down for transport on Saturday. Muffler guy is about an hour away one way, so I don't want to loose anything.

I bolted on the hood latches for transport, even though they are coming back off for paint...don't need the hood blowing open. Bolted the passenger door handle back in so I could roll up the windows and still get the door open....that will be coming back off for paint also. Took some scrap foam and pushed into the window openings for transport, so the windows didn't rattle. Then a few more little misc. things, just to make sure it was ready to move.

Should be able to get the exhaust welded up by noon. Talked to my mechanic buddy, hoping to get some brake lines fabbed up this weekend also...maybe Saturday night if he's in a good mood. Then.......I'm probably going to have to wet sand and paint.....
