Hi Mike,

Ya left out "cantankerous and overly opinionated in that description. ;)

But thanks anyway. :)

Mark...

Welcome to ih8mud, home of the ih8mud slinging.

I'll have two 2Fs, plain vanilla and a small block chevy with extra hot sauce please. :flipoff2:

hullendersauce, when it comes to finding a good machinest to do engine work: ask around locally (F, 2F engine parts are too big for affordable shipping and I don't trust shipping a reground engine component). For F, 2F engines I'd stick with a seasoned machinest. I have an older guy that does my work, he also build local race engines and is pretty trustworthy, at least the best I'm going to find in my area. I spend more time researching and learning my fj40's; fj60's as I do actually wrenching on them. But then I just got into them less than two years ago. After a little bit of time and replacing every part on your truck, the understanding and know-how becomes much easier.

Great thread, thanks Mark and PinHead.

Have you two considered posting an example of how the average guy might improve/build his 2f? If so this would be a great candidate thread for tech links. Actually it already is a great candidate for tech IMHO. :grinpimp:

Hullunder, risingsun4x4.org is a great place to meet CO cruiserheads and find recomendations for local machinists etc.

sean, you can get alot more out of a 2f

If I remember correctly the LT-1 is SIGNIFICANTLY different from the SBC.

Not the original LT1 from 1970. Its a small block chevy as every one knows them, just with some OEM tuning, like a holley carb(IIRC) and an aluminum intake, high compression etc.

That's an easy one for me:
Leave it just like Toyota built it. They were built for extreme simplicity and utter reliability and that is their zen. They have plenty of power for any normal intended use of the vehicle.

Seeing a hopped up 2F is like seeing your mother dressed like a cheap hooker: It's just WRONG.

You could spend over $1000 hot rodding a 2F and end up with rod sticking out the side of the block.

BTW, I had 190K on the 350 in my 88 suburban when I sold it and it was running pretty good, so I imagine that it made it over 200K. Transmissions were a different story.

i have a 73 stock 40 and i went with the stock intake with a weber card, 6 into 1 header and plug off all the smog stuff and enjoy the ride i have never had any problems going up hills or flooding, i was really impressed after i put the header on what a diffrence, i am also in so cal

Well, this thread is timely. I have this 1986 2F in the garage sandwiched between the rails of a 1969 FJ40 project. It needs rebuilding. I'm running the 2F so there ... you can't change my mind. My question is compression. Since I don't live in a third world country, and don't run Mexican ditch water, even when I'm in Baja, I would like to pump up the compression more.

But, I do travel to Mexico and need to run their regular grade gas (premium is not available below the border towns). I also don't want the expense of higher grade gas at home. How much can I mill off the head and still keep the compression within 87 octane?

lol...im just a gracious guy!

Mark mentioned the early seperate runner intake earlier. I have one it's stock 68, mated to a good exhaust manifold, and the the first 18" of downpipe and clamp. The intake has been clearanced to fit the 2F, only minor filing to fit over the larger studs. The exhaust manifold was picked up used, it has all the correct bolts but must have been a little different as I had to make a plate spacer to fit between the 2 manifolds. The heat flapper was removed and the hole welded tig welded up.

Make an offer plus shipping, paypal, not gonna pull it till somebody speaks up. msmythe@iei.net

Diesel shoudl take a TON more PSI than that.

My Powerstroke takes about 20 easily..

Hey Folks! New guy here. This is one interesting thread. ;)

We just got an '87 FJ60 for the family mobile and weekend off roading. I want to keep the motor as stock as possible, but at the same time I want to get the most out of it that I can.

I have seen a couple of posts on this thread about doing a header and intake system. We are located in California and HAVE to pass smog. So will any of this effect that option for more power?

So if it is smog legal, I am planing on replacing or rebuilding the carb (over 200k on factory carb), upgrading the exhaust from the block back (header / highflow cat / 2.5 inch cat back magna flow exhaust), and a K&N air filter.

Does that sound like a good start to you guys? If not, where would you start? And don't say "with a new motor."

Thanks in advance for your help. It is nice to finaly find a place to talk about the Toad with people that might actualy respond.
