That is far to fast for a single valve noise. Can you take a mechanics stethoscope and probe around to see if you can narrow down the point of noise? Was that alternator new? I have herd a dead alternator bearing make that kind of sound before.

How about the gear? If you mess up the gear taking it off and on, it sounds like that.

I did have to reuse the gear off the old pump, but it was not damaged. It does kind of seem like it's coming from the DS front area of the motor.

Alternator is not new. It is from a sequoia and i don't recall the milage on it, but it was in great shape and showed a charge.

Here is a youtube video clip of it. You can't hear at first because i have the camera too close to the fan, but wait and you can hear it. I really think it's a valve out.

Do not pull the valve cover ! I had EXACTLY the same noise from mine when I rebuilt it the end of last year and I was convinced I had a problem in the valve train. I was so depressed and about to pull the valve cover and something told me not to. I 'slept on it' and decided it must be the power steering pump. I ended up refilling it and rebleeding it and the noise eventually went away. Make sure the pump has the correct working amount of fluid in it before you go any further.

Hope this helps ? Great rebuild by the way. It's an incredible feeling when you have it all done and you 'own it'.

i checked the PS fluid several times. The first time it was very frothy. I cut the motor off and filled it up with more fluid. Now, it seems to just swirl around like normal. What else can i do?

I hope you are right cause i felt pretty much like i had been kicked in the balls when i heard that noise.

I'm not sure what else you can do with the PS pump: I'll let others chime in and maybe offer a solution. All i can say is make sure the PS pump is squared away and that you are 1000% sure the PS pump is OK before you start pulling stuff apart again.

I feel your pain: I came inside after starting my 'beast' and hearing that noise and the wife knew something was up, and it wasn't good !

Good luck...

drop all the belts and see if the noise goes away.

Could you even remove the PS pump also and see if noise goes away?

Is there any problem running the engine (temporarily) with the PS pump removed.

After hearing it, I'd definately be taking a close listen with a stethescope. As others have said, have a probe around the PS pump but also the oil pump - you mentioned earlier you suspected an issue with oil pressure???

If nothing else mate, keep your chin up, you've come too far to give up now. There's always the occasional gremlin to sort out. You'll be laughing about it this time next week!!!

NO! Do what Rick said... "drop the belts and see if the noise goes away" If it does away, then I would start with the gear... If the gear is good check the pump. I know its new but stuff happens! Good luck!

Just played around with it for a few hours and i think i have identified the noise. First off, i still had a ton of air in the PS system. I put the front end on jack stand and unlocked the wheel and cranked it left and right, over and over. I was getting bubbles for about a good 1.5 hour time frame. Started it up and it still had the tapping. Keep in mind, when i started it i was still getting slight bubbles, but nothing like before, so the noise should of been quieter. It wasn't.

Pulled out the stethoscope and 99.99999% identified the noise area as the PS pump.

Then i really tried to think about the timeline and it kind of leads me to think about the gear.

About a year and a half ago, i had a leaking PS high pressure line. I was pretty broke at the time and i could only afford the NAPA high pressure line. Purchased it and it was a POS in my opinion. Waited and saved up for the OEM hose. In the mean time i had the PS rebuild seals sitting on the shelf that i got from Beno a long time ago. So i decided to rebuild the pump while i was at it.

Rebuilt the pump and then had the money for the OEM line. Also, i ordered the O-ring for the distributor since it was leaking. Ordered everything up, put everything on, cranked it and tapping just like i hear now.

The gear is the same gear and the same key from the original PS pump. I visually inspected it, but honestly wasn't really looking for anything since i thought the tapping was from valves. That just seems like it has to be the noise?!

Oh no, was the clicking the reason you did the whole engine rebuild?

One of them.... Actually, i had been wanting to do it but needed a good reason. That noise sealed the deal.

Take a micrometer to the power steering gear and make sure it is not out of round. The gear is not as tough as it looks.

Here is a good video clip of the sound after about 1 hour of priming the system.

After hearing that newer video, my money is still on the PS pump. Your noise is a lot louder than mine was but very similar in 'tempo'.

Keep on digging. Don't tear into the valve cover until you're 1000% sure it's them.

Rgds...

I'm going to keep trying to prime the pump later today when i get home from work.

Before i pull the pump, i'm going to do what landtank suggested and pull the belts just to be sure. I think there is another pump sitting around with a gear on it; i may try to throw it in just for a second to see if it makes the same racket.

primed the pump, primed it some more, and more and more... no bubbles and it still sounds like a fawking metal beaked wood pecker is in there!

Belts are coming off now. Will report back what i find. There could possibly be an add in the for sale section at this point i'm about to blow a fuse.
