Wow, I have not seen so much work going into a vehicle with so little mileage before! lol

But, when something sits like that, better to be safe than sorry. When you know a vehicle inside and out like that, you have warm fuzzies when you need to really rely on it. I look forward to seeing what you do with it! Good luck with your build, it looks like it will be a very nice machine indeed, good find!

After spending more time working on the truck, I have my suspicions about the displayed mileage. Supposedly it had 36,000 kms, which is approximately 22,000 miles. That’s nothing.

But why did the speedo cable break on the way home from LA? Seems odd for a 22k miles truck.

(I am not actually doing 200 km/h in this photo).

Why does it have tap water in the coolant system? It’s a lot of work to drain the Toyota Red coolant and add tap water. Why would you pull the factory coolant with only 22k miles on the truck? That doesn’t make sense.

Why was the radiator in such bad shape? And why were all the coolant hoses "crunchy"?

Why is the transmission leaking gear oil? At 22,000 miles it should just be getting broken in.

Here is a photo of the hood release cable. Why is it already frayed with only 22k miles?

Overall the truck is in great shape. But some of these details just don't add up. I don’t know the full history (especially coming from the Middle East). Were used parts swapped into the truck after the repaint? Did it get a gauge cluster swap/rollback? Does it really have 22,000 miles? Who knows. I’m just going to take care of it the best I can now that I own it.

I was able to get the engine on the stand today.

I’m still struggling with removing the water by-pass pipe. I’ll try collapsing it on itself with a chisel and BFH next time.

I really enjoy doing manual/technical work, but I don't have a lot of free time these days.

I HATE wasting what little time I do have looking for tools or fumbling around a messy work space. It gives me anxiety. So I dedicate about 30% of my "free" time to cleaning up and organizing.

One day I hope to have a full shop/garage with a lift, compressed air, parts washer, and all the other goodies. But for now, I'm just doing the best with what I have and keeping it clean and organized.

Having been in the Collector/Hobby/enthusiast Car, truck, and motorcycle world for several years, the folks that have their stuff really neat and well organized ALWAYS do great work and have quality and thorough builds, they just wouldn’t have it any other way!

You can rebuild 70+% of a Land Cruiser with a 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm and 19mm. Sure there is that many more to finish off that 30% but man it is a beautiful thing to need so few tools to rebuild these trucks.

Noted. It's my day job and other tinkering the leads to the over abundance of tools, especially the 3/4" drive set I got on clearance, what the heck do I need 3/4" for?

Success! Drilled out the elbow with a step-bit and pulled the bypass pipe with a slide hammer.

Nice work! Did you get any guidance on install of new? Light clean of the block side with 800 grit, and rubber mallet to install? I have no idea.

The flange surfaces were surprising clean. Still, I prepped it with a Scotch-Brite pad and a small wire brush on a Dremel. Then used a very light coat of Permatex coolant-safe gasket maker applied to both the pipe flange and the block flange. I set it in place with a brass drift because there is not enough room to hit it directly with a hammer. Just tap lightly and work your way around the circumference of the flange. Voilà!

Bingo! Too easy.

Not doing turbo this year, but prepping while I have the engine out so turbo is bolt-on down the road.

tap the block for HP oil line and open the freeze plug for low pressure return to sump.

Since I’m not rebuilding the engine, I’m not going to tap the block. I don’t want to get metal swarf in the oil system. I’ll just weld a -10AN fitting on the oil pan for turbo oil drain. And use the oil filter sandwich adapter included in the JB/Eclipse turbo kit for oil supply.

Water coolant lines will be an amalgamation of OEM Toyota stuff from various other turbo trucks. I did order the combo vacuum/coolant line you referenced from the HDJ78/79 trucks (that runs across the front of the engine on the water pump).
