nice Will, gonna be a good runner. i see the rebuilt tranny/tcase in the background
Yessir! It’s going to need 3.70 diff gears with that 4:1 t-case. Might as well throw some lockers in it at the same time. ;)

@Will Van ….. “Normally you wouldn’t install an EGT gauge on a naturally aspirated diesel. But because I eventually want to turbo, it will be good to know what the EGTs were prior to turbo as a baseline comparison”.
——————————————————————————————————-
I ran my 1HZ normally aspirated for several months prior to having a turbo installed to get a feel for the engines overall health. Much like you, I had an EGT installed and was shocked at how fast the temps would rise even on slight inclines. I believe you made a excellent decision installing one.

I’m starting reassembly and I’m curious what y’all think of these engine and trans mounts. They are just beginning to crack where the rubber meets the metal mount. Should I pause and order new mounts? Or just run them?

I’m not eager to replace them if I don’t have to. But if I need to replace them, now is the time to do it.

Apologies for the lack of updates. I decided to spend some quality time with my father and brother over the past week on a guys' trip. We loaded up the 2019 4Runner and headed to Colorado. We did way too much to post here, but it was an epic trip through Durango, Telluride, Ouray, and Silverton. We took Imogene Pass from Telluride to Ouray and had an overall epic adventure.

As always, I kept my eye out for cool Land Cruisers along the way. Randomly decided to do a water-crossing while toodling around in Silverton and stumbled on this awesome 79 series camping setup. It looked like they were from Italy.

Back in town now, and while I was away my engine/trans mounts showed up. I hope to make a great deal of progress this weekend now that the weather has cooled a bit in Austin.

Thanks for looking!

I was able to get the core support/grille reinstalled and the A/C compressor mounted before I had to quit for the day.

Next is to install the H55F transmission and clean the air intake. The whole intake assembly is FULL of fesh-fesh/sand. I hadn’t noticed it before until I started to reinstall.

I had a little time this afternoon to get the rear end plate and flywheel installed. I decided to upgrade to the 300mm flywheel and clutch setup @cruiseroutfit offers (stock is 275mm). All high quality Toyota/Aisin/Exedy components in Kurt’s kit.

I put a small dab of blue/medium Loctite on each flywheel bolt and torqued to 94 ft-lbs.

How do you like my flywheel stop? Ha!

Cruiser Porn.
Really like were this build is going, Super nice work !!! Thanks for sharing

17705-17080 nets you a new cap for about $60 from your local Toyota dealership.
Yessir, thank you. I found the replacement caps. Since the dust collector on the bottom needs a gasket too, I was going to try to just replace the gasket. Plus I’m PCing the whole assembly. I’ll keep hunting around.

Maybe I’ll try to find that insulation tape they put around radiators.

Cruiser Outfitters should have this on their shelf to sell you.
Unfortunately they do not. Neither does Georg at Valley Hybrids. Evidently it is an uncommon clutch alignment tool (but I am told Terrain Tamer includes them with their kits). However, I have a couple of leads:

Thanks to @FJ73Texas, I found out Spectre Off Road has the correct tool for $9 - Specter Off Road Service Tool 200-11HZ. I ordered it yesterday.

I also ordered Toyota SST 09301-55022 from MegaZip. Can anyone confirm Toyota PN 09301-55022 will actually work for a 1HZ to H55F clutch? I pulled the number from my repair manual (which covers several other engine/transmission combinations), but I don't have any details on it.

Well, I'm still trying to finish my transmission install. The good news is that the clutch alignment tool from Specter Off Road worked great. Part Number 200-11HZ has the correct spline count (21-spline) and the correct pilot bearing diameter (15mm), so the clutch aligned perfectly.

However, the bad news is that the flywheel bolts and clutch pilot bearing are the wrong size, and the flywheel alignment pins were not included.

Full story - The stock clutch and flywheel for my truck is 275mm. I read on Mud that many people retrofit the oversized 1HD-T 300mm clutch/flywheel for better clamping load and a heavier flywheel. Especially if they plan to turbo. Great! I love upgraded stock parts.

I did a little research on Mud and realized that Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters stock(ed) the 300mm kit. Gave them a call and ordered the kit. Unfortunately, Cruiser Outfitters did not have the clutch cover for the kit. They asked me if I would like to source the clutch cover myself and ship the kit immediately, or wait until they received a clutch cover and ship the kit as a whole? I opted to ship the kit immediately and source the clutch cover myself. No problem. Found clutch cover from another vendor and arrived without incident.

Fast forward to install. Realized that the clutch install tool Cruiser Outfitters supplies is incorrect. No worries, they're hard to source and mistakes happen. Received correct tool from SOR. Go to install clutch cover and realize 275mm setup uses six M8 bolts to fasten the clutch cover to the flywheel, but 300mm setup uses eight M10 bolts. No flywheel bolts were included with my kit. Dangit. Oh well, I'll install the bellhousing, throwout bearing, and clutch fork...except throwout bearing supplied in the kit is 35mm for B series, but I need the 38mm for 1HZ. Double-dangit!

Obviously mistakes happen and this is a very niche truck/kit. I'm confident Cruiser Outfitters will take care of me. Just wish I was making more headway on the install. FWIW, the parts supplied by Kurt and his team are very high quality - OEM Toyota, Aisin, and Exedy components.

Rant over. I'm going to work on rust remediation and diff gear oil change. Wish me luck!

Rust repair at the battery box. Looks like battery acid splashed here and wasn’t cleaned up. I used a brass brush and the Master series cleaner to prevent flash rusting. I’ll save Master series primer and paint for another day.
