The front rides much softer now.

I am trying to figure out how to route the oil from the PCV filter back into the engine so it doesn't run down the inside of my wheel well. Any ideas?

I vent mine under the truck with no PCV filter at all. The way I minimize the oil loss is very simple and effective. I just bring the hose up from the valve cover for a few inches before bringing it back down to vent under the truck. Most of the oil drains right back into the valve cover this way. Before this I was loosing a few litres of oil between oil changes, now I loose barely any.

You could also buy a good quality catch can, which is supposed to catch all the oil in theory. I found it just a messy PITA.

I installed a ProVent, but it just filters out the oil and drains it out the bottom. I will have to try putting an upward bend in the hose and see if that helps. It is a relief that someone else was loosing that much oil through their PCV, I was worried about how much was escaping. It would be great to keep the oil in the engine.

The other thing that helps a lot with pcv oil loss is cleaning the filter inside the valve cover. When it's dirty oil builds up in the baffle and gets pushed out the PCV. It's a dirty job but worth it if hasn't been done.

Wow great write-up I saw you listed it on CL and have moved on. I may steal some of this as I start just a few of the mods you did.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! Its been a lot of fun (and a little frustrating, at times :)). I look forward to seeing what you do with yours!

I'm no expert by any means (this has been my first diesel) but I will help out where I can.

Well, the Prado went to a new owner today. :( Here is the last view of it.

I'll be sticking around! There is still one 70-series in the family, and there will probably be another in the not-too-distant future.

Hi all. I'm the guy that bought AirheadNut's lovely Prado, so I figured it'd be nice to continue this thread with the improvements I make. I'm nowhere near AirheadNut's level with respect to truck-tinkering so I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions.

In the short-term, I need to drive the truck down to Texas where I have a garage to pull it apart in. I'll pick up pretty much where AirheadNut left off, installing the transmission cooler he bought and then hopefully tackling the steering wobble and adding a w/a intercooler. After that I plan to flush the cooling system and run Evans in it, and then I'll think about exploring some of GTSSportCoup's other mad-scientist ideas.

The longer-term plan is to take the truck on the road more or less full time starting next spring, so there will probably be some mods related to the interior (solar, some light camper conversion etc..).

For the last few weeks the truck has sat in storage in Bozeman while I finished up my work, but I should be starting the drive to Texas later this week. I'll probably get a rotate/balance, and do a oil/air/fuel filter before I leave.

Any recommendations for prepping this truck for a 3000 mile drive AirheadNut?

Nice work! Looking forward to hearing what sort of numbers you see. With a stock engine I was seeing 1100+ on the slightest hill!! My probe is placed exactly how yours is.
Where did you order your pyrometer also thermocouple? Not sale in Indonesia, Can you help me?
I need install on my LJ-71 engine 2LT, Thank you..

Great to see that you are enjoying the Prado! As far as prepping for a road trip is concerned, I'd say make sure you have a good complement of tools, watch the temperatures, and carry some extra oil. I never got around to cleaning out the PCV filter in the valve cover, so it probably will loose some oil there. You might want to check the tension on the engine belts, too. I look forward to what you are going to do with it! :)

Welp we're on the road. Here's a pic from wind-river canyon in Wyoming.

The first day of driving wen't great, but this morning we seem to have lost the turbo. Yesterday is was kicking in around the 1500-2000 rpm range, but today it won't kick in unless I'm flooring it and the tachometer is reading 3k. I haven't really done anything under the hood except top off the oil and take a peek at the air filter. I'll google around but any advice/pointers to relevant threads would be appreciated, I can't even maintain 100km/h and keep the egt's under 900 without it.
