 bad day yesterday.

Started off with an early morning call from work and the suite above ours froze and broke fire sprinklers and flooded and trashed 1/2 of our office. Had to go in and see the damage but the Land Cruiser wouldn't start. It had been below zero at night for a couple days but it just isn't turning over very fast. My jump charger wouldn't help it either.

Tundra to the rescue. Got back from the disaster at work and decided to try and start the cruiser. Had to back it out but my shop has a small ledge and hill to get into it. You have back out and be able to get in so it won't roll into a tree behind. So as I was pushing it I slipped on the ice and didn't get the door closed enough or time to stop.:bang:

Yeah, not real happy about that moment of stupidity. The bottom hinge is a little sprung, but overall no major damage. I should be able to push that little crease out to straight again....hopefully.
Any idea why she would not start?
Just the cold?

Pretty sure my battery is just not doing great in the cold. The crank slows down which is bad on a diesel need compression. Going to load test that battery today and see if it's any good or not. I have videos of it starting below zero not plugged in about 5 seconds of cranking. It was for sure cold, but I don't think cold enough to not start.

The drive in this morning.

Battery tested bad. That particular battery lasted 2 years and 8months. I used the group 27 Everstart MAXX from Walmart. The benefit is 3 years full replacement, 2 more years prorated and the fact you can get them anywhere in the US. I'm not a fan, but the unknown history, questionable Optima Red Top that spent time sitting out in the snow before I acquired it, tests fine. That battery is from 2015.

I'd have a hard time recommending them right now because less than years just isn't good for a battery IMO. Not too mention I "owed" $5.76 because the battery price went up. I didn't have the energy to fight with them over $5.76. The Everstart MAXX are made by Johnson Controls. Eitherway I'm not super impressed, and would have been really annoyed if it would have left me stranded some where. I won't use again after this replacement one.

I'm completely more annoyed by my door mess-up and childishly I'm going to blame it on the battery.

So for now, my battery has 3 months of full replacement left, then prorated for the next 2 years as it follows the original warranty. Next time I will get a DEKA or X2 battery.

Hinges came in; pretty cheap. Going to check with the PDR to see when I can get in.

On the battery front, it was only 20F/-7C this morning so not super cold, and she fired right up. The glow screen didn't even pop on and she started within a second.
They said the CCA was down quite a bit on the bad battery which would explain it.

Not that I don’t enjoy a thread that features a BJ74 but in reality I check it almost daily just for the photography. 😊

Battery tech for those very bored.

Cranking Amps (CA) vs Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)

The difference is that Cranking Amps measures how much power is required to start a battery during normal climate (32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celcius) while Cold Cranking Amps measures required power during cold climate (0 degrees Fahrenheit or -18 degrees Celcius).

CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) is the value (given in Amps) of the maximum current that a new, fully charged, 12V battery can deliver for 30 seconds, with the voltage NOT dropping below 7.2V, at 0°F (-18°C).

The battery I have is 810 CCA, and 1000 CA, 140 min RC (reserve capacity)

So when the temp gets below 0F, the CCA diminishes. The other side of this equation is that cars get harder to start when cold because of oil, cylinder wall temp, yaddah yaddah. My bad battery was showing 500ish CCA at room temp when checked so completely explains why it struggled starting recently.

You also have an option of a battery heater/blanket. Get your battery warm and it will perform better than a freezing batter. At $50ish bucks and wrap it around your battery and plug in on a timer, it's cheap enough for a test to see how much it helps.

Having lived in some cold climates ;) I would disagree with battery blankets. If a battery is cold and you start to heat it with a blanket it does a poor job of warming all the way through. The best is to install a trickle charger to your battery and plug it in when you plug in your block heater. This keeps the molecules bouncing around and prevents freezing and keeps the battery fully charged. Just my humble opinion.

That Siri is full of 💩

It was actually 0F/ -17C and felt colder. The cruiser was outside last night under the lean-too, not plugged in and it was one of those humid/frosty mornings.
New battery works ok, I can see how a 24v setup would help on starting. I'm ready for spring.

Sometimes it help to run the fan prior starting just to wake up the batteries. Then shut off the fan and fire the engine.
Also the glow system stays on for quite a while when cold and take a lot of current. It help to wait the glow cycle to be completely finish.

Hmm, I've never heard that before about turning the fan on before starting. Today she fired right up, but it was also 20F/ -7C. I'll try that tomorrow when it's supposed to be below zero again.

Yeah, it was cold here this morning!
1 degree F when my wife called and said the 100 was running rough and the CEL was blinking.
Bad coil pack (gasser problems)

Gassers! Supposed to be colder tomorrow so we will see how that goes. Coil Packs aren't too terribly priced are they?

Ended up scoring an old Norcold fridge/freezer last night for cheap. Ive been wanting to get one of these for a long time now so finally scored.

It's a little beat up, chipped used, much like the land cruiser it's going in. Its an MRFT-640c. So not real big but should be good and better than ice coolers. I plan to use my rear power that's already wired, so I either need to switch to the screw on marine power, or create an adapter to make it work.

it was 7F here this morning, thought I'd show somewhat of a comparison to a 24v 3B that's cold starting. I guess this is the magic of 24v, 20:1 compression vs 17:1, and 7 degrees warmer in temperature.
