-17F -27C this morning out feeding the horses.

It was the hardest start of this winter. I dont have any block/webasto anything like that. I have an unheated garage for right now that it was sitting in for 3 days of cold. Push it out, glow the screen once and in about 6~7 seconds started. Not bad from just 1 battery. I do have the Redarc Dual Battery kit but I don't have an override momentary switch to use both batteries at the same time to start. I need to set that up.

I can definitely see how nice a Webasto would be. Easy starts, instant heat and other things, but as always there are PLENTY of other things to spend money on and we really only have a 2 weeks of this bad cold during the year.

Still not mad about my lower rad hose insert. Are you using the stock screen timer? Or on a Wilson Switch?

To me it depends on what you are wanting to do. If you are just wanting to rebuild the transfer case you can absolutely just pull/rebuild without dropping the transmission. There are a few "blind" bolts up top on the t-case, but they aren't hard at all and I would do it again this way so I didn't have to pull the whole setup.

Basically remove the skidplate, drop drivelines, fluid and start unbolting and taking off in pieces. @PabloCruise helped but 2 people aren't necessarily needed. It was nice to have an extra set of hands and eyes when lining everything up.

That said, it isn't "that" much harder to pull the whole setup. It took me 2 hours to get the transmission/tcase dropped the last time, but I've also been in there a few times over the last 2 years so I remember the tricks. A good transmission jack can make all the difference in the world.

It would be easier to work on the tcase completely out from under the vehicle, especially if you can get it all up to workbench height. It wasn't that bad at all working underneath it, but would definitely be easier on a workbench.

I only had to jackup the back rear tire about a foot or so off the ground and I was able to get the whole setup out right in front of the rear tire. Not sure if you are lifted or not?


The good thing about pulling it all is that it will give you a chance to look at the back of the engine, check the rear main, replace the clutch (might as well unless it's almost new) and then clean up the transmission.

One more question on the Tranny/Tcase rebuild/reseal... do I need to have any FIPG material handy as well?

The only sealant I used was the Loctite 518 or Permatex 51813 as shown by Georg on his t-case rebuild video. I believe either will be fine to use but Permatex is easier to find local.

Perusing around during a few zoom calls.

I know they have these for the 60s/80s/troopys, but I haven't seen one installed on a 73/74 yet. Someone probably has a set on here, but I just found it.

Might be a cool setup IF I ever get my pop-top setup because my other hardtop doesn't have windows. I could either pop in a boat hatch/window or make something very similar to this.

I’m waiting for them to release a glass version.
 
Snowmaggeddon hit Northern Colorado. I think we ended up with close to 2' all said and done over 2 days.


Some drifts got up to 6~7' high. This was a normal paved 2 lane road. Some snow wheeling on the way to the horses. That snow is hard.





And of course gratuitous snow picture, not much snow in the open fields.
