So I have a question.

My oil pressure indicator is consistently low. The indicator needle lives in the bottom third of the gauge all the time. It fluctuates a bit based on RPM, maybe going up or down .5cm or so, but its not a serious change. It never hits the middle third no matter what.

Just for reference. The needle always lives in the mid section of the bottom third.

Is this a problem? I check my oil frequently and its right where it should be (if not a bit overfilled). What does this mean?
Thanks guys!

But you haven't put a mechanical gauge on it yet to check? If not, go buy one ($20) and just duct tape it to the hood so you can see it while driving.

If that's good, then I would replace the oil pressure sender.

What are these things for? Is this where Im losing my vacuum?

Another question. Im getting some seepage from around my radiator hoses, and the thermostat housing. Should I replace the gasket for the thermostat, and replace the hose?

Does anyone know if the gasket for the thermostat is common with the FJ60 thermostat?
Another question. Any pro-tips on getting the thermostat cap/housing off? When I first got the engine I took the three bolts out of the top of the housing and tried to pop the cap off. No beans. I couldnt get that thing off. Am I missing a bolt somewheres? Should I just tap it off with a mallet? I dont want to tap a chisel in there and pry it off and risk damaging the two sealant surfaces.

Im just trying to get the little bugs worked out of the system at this point.

Turns out the DC-DC converter I installed is NOT waterproof.... Thats a serious problem. Im looking for a replacement. If anyone has recommendations, Id love to hear them.

LAST question.

There appears to be oil collecting on top of my air cleaner. I noticed an oily film on the low-points of the lid, and there was oil collection there. I dried it all up, chalked it up to "something happened during the swap and I spilled something", but few weeks later it was back. Now the paint is flaking off and is obviously being removed by the oil. Im going to try to figure out what type of oil it is. Any thoughts?

The pink plastic connector definitely looks like a vacuum connection, the green electrical one not so much.

The green connector is the temp sensor for the glow timer.

The pink vacuum connector isn't causing a vacuum leak. There are supposed to be vac lines going into and out of that valve. That valve controls an idle-up circuit to help the engine warm up faster. But if the lines are disconnected, no worry--and no possibility of a leak there now.

Yes, tap the T-stat housing with a rubber mallet. I would replace the T-stat, gasket and radiator hoses if I were you. All are still available from Toyota--for now...

Dan, you always help me out. Thanks so much.

I went down to toyota today. Picked up a thermostat and gasket. I asked about the radiator hoses. They said they have no record of a "12H-T diesel"
They did have the hoses for a 2H. Are the hoses similar? Could I make a 2H hose work?
Do we have a part number for the original 12HT hose?

I think I posted the part numbers in my 12HT thread.

If not: call beno or CDan. I'm *confident* that beno can get them for you no sweat. ;)

4 hours into a 9 and a half hour drive to KING IF THE HAMMERS!

So stoked. Got my friend Chris to come along. We left school, are skipping Friday and trucking back Saturday.

Hopefully will find some other Mud members with some sweet rigs!

Anybody down there now/planning on being there?

We brought my 60 with the 12HT.

Water pump, t stat, rad hoses are the same on 2H and 12HT, from what I've seen. I have both engines.
Also get the little bypass hose when you're at it. Also good to have a spare radiator cap.

Are you losing vac? Didn't catch that... Enough vac on the brake booster?

Oil in air filter assembly could be a bit from the pvc valve on the top cover, hose goes to inlet pipe.
Open oil fill cap and see if oil/mist is pushing out, a video if that is helpful.
On my 2H I had lots of pressure there when revving, cap would lift a bit up if just sitting over the fill hole,I could feel the pressure with my hand.
My 12HT has no pressure out blow out there.
Try adjusting your valves as a first.
How much oil in the filter box are we taking?

Damn jealous of your trip to KOTH!
I saw hammercity was big this year...
Got a bit boring during the parking lot at sledgehammer, at least on stream.
What was the actual hold up there?

Thanks so much for the parts info! I really appreciate it. Ill check the vac on the brake booster, but what i think its going to come down to is replacing the butterfly valve or re-working it somehow. That HAS to be the problem. Its just not closing tightly enough to choke out the engine.

I will respond to the oil spray bellow. Thanks so much!

Ok so this post is all business, then we can get to KOH!

So. I found out that its NOT oil thats spraying a fine mist near the air intake. Its DIESEL! Finally, enough collected for me to take a sample and sniff test. Its diesel for SURE. Heres a picture or two of the situation.

There are no apparent holes anywhere. Everything looks pretty secure. However, I have pointed out collection, drip, and wet spots. The spray is not huge, nor is it plentiful or wide spread. Its just.... there. Im kind of concerned about having vapor or diesel mist floating around my engine bay.

Is it possible a hard line is cracked and is leaking? This problem only started recently (to my knowledge). There isnt even enough fuel loss to create a drip trail. Its just kind of "misted" up there...... very perplexing. At idle, theres NOTHING going on. No spray, no mist, nothing. Only after 4 solid hours of driving at 2,500 rpm did the problem become apparent when i did my routine 150 mile "bay check". What do you guys think? Any process of elimination I can do here? Ideas? Where could it be coming from?

Thanks..... Im very perplexed.

In other news. The truck still has a tough time shutting off. When its dead cold, she dies no problem (as expected). Once shes up to temperature, it could go any number of ways. Sometimes she cuts out after spluttering for a few seconds, and sometimes she'll just choke and cough until i let the clutch out a bit and "stall" it to kill it.

Should I hook up a fuel shutoff cable to the fuel shutoff and just not worry about the butterfly? Or should I really dig into it and see what I can do?

I've had issues with my fuel lines leaking. all of them except one were from broken fuel lines.
the time i had a mist / leak like that it took me 3 days to figure out. turned out to be the fuel filter gasket. replaced the fuel filter and problem is gone.
I have a fuel shut off cable installed, it's how I shut mine off everytime.

FUN POST! KOH WAS AWESOME!

I left school on thursday at 1:15, packed and provisioned at safeway then headed south with my co-pilot and good friend Chris. Long story short, we hauled a$$ for about 8 hours (stopping for dinner and fuel 3 times). The truck ran AWESOME. The power was awesome on the highway. Hills werent a problem, and the 5 speed had us comfortably cruising at 75-80 at only 2,400-2,600 rpm the whole way.

The truck stayed pretty cool, and we averaged over 23mpg the whole way. It was pretty funny fueling up next to the big rigs on I-5. Overall, the truck was a dream to drive down. (except for the seats...... leg cramping was a serious problem. I plan to swap in some cloth 4 runner seats ASAP)

Then..... 8 hours in.... at 9:20 on a longgggg downhill stretch of some desert highway, I got a ticket for doing 81 in a 65. Grant it, I was trying to pass a semi who kept weaving into my lane.... but the CHP officer didnt want to hear that. The ticket put a bit of a damper on the trip... but life goes on. Anyway.

PICTURE TIME!

Surprisingly, i only saw ONE other fj60 at the ENTIRE event.... a awesome 60 from yotamasters that I spotted only twice and couldnt get pictures from. A handful of 80s were there, and 40's were the most plentiful "cruiser type" that I saw, but most were serious crawlers. HEEPS ABOUNDED.

I only took pictures of cruisers..... and the ulta4's

enjoy

I also got to meet the man himself MARLIN! The owner/founder of Marlin Crawler. It was really great to get to meet someone from the industry who was so friendly and interested in what I was doing. He loved my truck and was really the nicest person I ran into at KOH. He introduced me to a whole pit team and showed me around. An all around great guy.

Hammertown was huge by the time we pulled in at 12:30 on thursday. By friday..... it was mobbed.

Heres a shot of my rig amongst the RV's of HammerTown

An overview shot from the top of Jackhammer (aka "The Parking Lot") It all started when a couple rigs plugged up a NARROW hole between two HUGE rocks. Then the maxxis truck made a break for it, wheeled it up a near vertical wall, only to blow out his rear diff/axle after making it up. In only two wheel drive, the team tried to drag the car up the trail by winching and shear horsepower. Then the winch went down (fuse was replaced). Then the synthetic line snapped. Then they tied it back together. Then they ran out of winch points so they decided to get intense. The team TURNED THE TRUCK AROUND in the tightest ravine you ever saw. They then take the course on at FULL SPEED in REVERSE to get max traction in the (now) rear wheels. We chased them for a hundred yards or so as they powered up the steep. Then they overheated and they bailed out as white smoke billowed from the car. Pretty crazy. But that gummed up jackhammer for the rest of the day.

A shot of our camp (as FAR away from hammertown as we could get hahaha) The noise was insane, the dust terrible, and the smoke immense. Not to mention people zipping around on quads, side-by-sides and dirtbikes until 4am.

"Chef Will" whipped up some awesome penne pasta with some tomato sauce, a little meat, and plenty of mozzarella cheese melted in. We slept in the truck on an air mattress. It was great. Nice and quiet, no dust, off the ground, comfortable and WARM. It got COLD at night. Camp setup worked great. Very mobile and easy to work with. We camped in two different locations.

Good report! I was streaming most of the KOTH live show, but never got the story straight on what started the parking lot at jackhammer.
Is there any video of that reversing action, would love to see it! ;)
Cool that you got to meet Marlin!

I had small misting of fuel on the hard lines and around the filter when i bought the 61. The 12ht had been sitting for 10 years, only started and run now and then. So i changed the fuel filter and gasket, drained oil fuel, changed oil and added some fuel lubricating smoothie.
Takes up moisture in the fuel, lubes the rubber and lines and whatnot. Also loosened and cranked the hard fuel lines at the injector and pump.
It solved my misting, worth a try.

Sorry. Heres the picture of the parking lot.

Going to do an oil change on Monday.

Does anyone know the part numbers to the oil filter, and fuel filter?
