A good alternator upgrade for the 12h-t is an Isuzu NPR one. They push out higher amps and only require slight modification to the bracket. Maybe someone else could chime in on this some more because I don't know that much about it.
please post up the part numbers for the coolant hoses. When you say the parts are coming from all over the country, I take you mean US, right? You mention dealing with the Canadian guys. I also need what you have listed above so thanks for sharing!
yes coming from all over country meaning U.S. supply warehouses for American Toyota. I contacted the Canadian dealerships to get the superceded part numbers because my dealer wasn't able to look them up. i'll get a photo of the radiator hoses and radiator part numbers for reference. I just got a call from Toyota so they will be bringing me the parts shortly still waiting on dave @ japan 4x4 for replacements of the rusty cooler pipes and valve cover gasket.
yesterday I sand blasted the hj60 mounts and bolted the freshly powder coated engine brackets back on the block. I attached the bell housing and mated it to the trans positioning the mounts and burned them in. Here is a picture of the first batch of parts back from powder coat. I also removed the fuel filler neck from my 60 and a spare one I had (from a 62 i parted) and removed the rectrictors out of them and turned them both in for zinc plating.
I put the engine back on the stand and went ahead and pulled the turbo, side covers, and oil pan. I need to clean them up today and turn them in for black powder coat. This engine appears to have had salt water in it at some point due to the extreme corrosion of the cooling system. I ordered a filter kit for the cooling system and plan on flushing it out after a good test drive. http://www.ebay.com/itm/231538921891?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT I may even leave the heater disconnected so if there is trash in the engine it wont contaminate my heater cores. I also made a run to the junk yard yesterday and found a Toyota minitruck p/s reservoir that was mounted on the fender. It will fit my 60 fender nicely I was hoping to find a good hj60 vacuum reservoir but haven't had much luck so I just ordered this http://www.ebay.com/itm/231574935833?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
I have three more questionable obstacles
1. my alternator is externally regulated and truck was internally regulated any insight on adding an external regulator?
2. I'll need a 12v source to operate the shutter valve for shutdown. I could always add a button but would like to just be able to turn the key off. It needs to apply 12v momentarily when key is turned off. any ideas?
3. p/s high pressure hose/line. I have fj62 lines hard lines but need a junction between the pump and the hard line. Do hj60s have short high pressure line?
Wow your not wasting any time! I'm envious that you are already getting it all done. Is there not a way to refurbish the corroded heater lines on the block? I haven't pulled mine apart yet but I hope that the lines are still good. Are you planning on getting gaskets for the exhaust manifold and turbo? I'm thinking about just getting the complete OEM gasket kit and saving anything that I don't use for down the line.
I saved this pic from another members build a while back, but I think it answers your third question:
I'm sure if you go to NAPA they could make one of these up for you.
yeah I remember seeing that from dan's thread. Im just not crazy about it having a solid connection there. The frame is stationary and obviously the diesel is going to vibrate quiet a bit, seems like a solid connection will be prone to cracking over time. Or is there a very small section of hose in that picture? Ive been looking at parts diagrams and looks like the original piece is a actually a combination tube/hose that is pictured here but that part doesn't seem to be available any longer.
I actually already have the replacement coolant pipes ordered from japan 4x4. I held off on getting a complete gasket set and just ordered a valve cover gasket and three coolant pipes. the rest of the gaskets: front and rear crank seal, side covers etc. I bought at Toyota since they are the same as hj60 and readily available stateside. I will probably order an overhaul gasket set at some point just to have on hand. I didn't want to do that this time around and leave my overhaul gasket set short the items im needing now. oh I also ordered a generic ct26 5piece gasket set off ebay to take care of the turbo gaskets while its off.
With the heater lines, if they don't have holes in them I leave them in vinegar for 48-72 hours and it takes them to bare metal than I just hit em with some engine paint. However on my next engine rebuild I'm going to buy those all new, it was a clean wire wheels and scrubbing them to reuse.

Thanks Alberto! I'm waiting on a couple of key parts from the powder coater and I should really make some progress on the engine. I ordered a new clutch kit on the 15th of May and it's still a no show apparently national back order that may be my biggest hold up. If it arrives I'll have the engine back in this weekend. Still will need to run exhaust and figure out power steering hose.
I put the gas filler back in sunday after zinc plating it I sprayed the exposed portion of it with cold galvanizing compound for some additional corrosion protection and off course installed a new grommet to keep the inside of the quarter panel dry. powder coated the splash plate and generously coated the hardware with anti sieze. Didn't do a whole lot sunday but did get the power steering box bolted back to the frame and steering shaft bolted back in place. I also removed the rear cross member and tossed it in with the next load of parts for powder coating.
Got some more parts today from Toyota. I got a new external voltage regulator, coolant temp sender, and new gaskets for the oil pickup and supply tubes. If anyone is planning on pulling the pan on there 12ht I'd have to say its a good idea to pull the plate between the pan and the block and reseal it since it attaches with the same bolts that secure the pan. (These are available from american Toyota)To remove that plate the oil pick up and its supply tube must be removed. I'll get some photos of the plate as soon as I get it back from powder coating.
some new parts and going on as well as part numbers. new oil and coolant senders, side cover gaskets, front and rear main seals, belts, by pass hoses, alternator oil pump feed hose, etc. Im holding off on replacing the thermostat until I flush the cooling system a couple of times.
I ordered this vacuum tank off ebay and found a nice place to mount it on the driver side fender using an existing bracket that housed some smog components. I used one captive nut in the bracket and had to drill one hole to mount the bracket supplied with the vacuum tank. The fj60 booster has a u shaped hardline on the brake booster to get the vacuum hose over toward the engine. with the diesel conversion i don't need the hose to run to the engine but to my vacuum tank so off comes the u shaped tube and I can use the existing hose to run straight from the booster to the vacuum tank. Removing that pipe also gets the rubber hoses away from the hot exhaust. Left hand drive 60 series diesels actually have a heatshield that protects the booster and master from the heat of the exhaust manifold and turbo, I may see if I can find one or make one.
pulled the crusty water pump. The bolts had a very slight amount of corrosion on them so I cleaned them up with a brass with wheel and gave them a nice coat of cold galvanizing compound. Also put some anti sieze on the threads for ease of future maintenance.
also went ahead and installed both new senders didn't get a picture of the one in the lower thermostat housing but you get the idea.
Tucker and I hooked up his pressure washer to some hot water and gave the engine bay a good wash, it worked so well I got carried away and jumped on a creeper and washed the undercarriage
Slow evening really waiting on last bit of powder coated stuff to put engine back together pan, side covers, etc. Clutch finally shipped and is scheduled to arrive tomorrow but won't do me much good until powder coating is done. I ordered a 3" elbow for the turbo charger that has a more common 3 bolt flange. I couldn't seem to find a flange to fit the elbow on the ct26 so figured good a time as any to upgrade. I'm going to order some 3" mandrel bends and fab up my own exhaust.
