1985 BJ70 CND refubishing and modifications

then you take the rear floor cover
flip it upside down
clean very well using acetone
remove the wax paper from the back of the sound deadner / heat retaining foil
CAREFULLY lay the cover onto the foil, once it sticks it does NOT let go.

once trimmed it looks pretty nice, almost too nice to face down at the steel floor
this material is amazing stuff
1/2" foam with wickedly strong adhesive back and nylon string reinforced foil front.
not cheap but worth every penny.

now time to attack the ceiling
clean very well
then clean again
then realize you don't like the way the wires are run so you rework them so they are above the head liner all the way, out of site and protected.
i also wired for 2 center LED lights (if anyone has suggestions for 3" X 3"+L, speak up) and a switch right about the door opening.

next up is the joy of installing the same sound deadner to the ceiling and then the actual custom head liner. the material matches the solid of the seats.

now you prep the insulation for installation.
clean the ceiling of any debris or oils, this truck was sprayed with krown so a wipe down was required. test the metal with a piece of tape, if it doesn't stick then repeat till it does stick.
measure the distance across, allow for a bit to go past the upper metal work, on a BJ70 it is 51.5"
cut the insulation accordingly then measure half way and cut a shallow line STRAIGHT across the middle (short side). peal back the protective paper about 6" on each side for ease of installation.

now bend the insulation on the cut and carefully line up that edge with the center marks on the ceiling.
start one side about 3" and then flip the other up and stick it about the same. this is much easier with 2 guys but you can do it solo if you need. check the outside edge to make sure you are straight and then start pealing and applying. best to run your hand up the middle and work from the middle out.
tape off the joints allowing for the lights.

then you prep the new head liner. i decided to go with the same material as the vinyl on the seats to tie it all together.
Grey Bruce upholstery did a very nice job, even returned the old top so i would have a good idea of what did what.
feed the bars through slots, at first it was "huh? there is no way this goes through there" but it does.
start at the back and snap the first couple bars into place.

next install the 3 retainer clips on the first bar to upper lip above the rear door.
install double face tape along the outside of the upper door lip.

pull and clip the rear section of the liner so the rear bar has more resistance to movement as you pull the liner forward.
double up this insulation between the crossbars, make sure you leave room for the bars to be able to rotate forward to tighten up the liner. this will add to the sound deadening and cut down on the liner flap.
work you way forward, keeping the retainer bars flipped up and straight in the center. pull too much and they bend forward, pull too little and the liner will sag.

that is it for today, tomorrow the rest of the retainers and on to the upper console installation.

How well does that mcmaster sound deadening foam kill noise? Compared to say the 'crusiercrap" stuff?

Does it compress at all? and stay compressed? 1/2 inch is a pretty big gap when it comes to edges, trim, under carpet. I would also think carpet would look "lumpy" . Also, for door and side panels, do you attach to the back of the panel, the door or not do the doors or panels at all.

the liner stretched and clipped, looking better.
the scary part for me is cutting in the light receiver holes one little slip, one wrong measurement and a beautiful top is ...fubar.
re installing the door trim.

i decided to try painting the interior trim pieces to match the PC.
i feel this will tie the interior together properly and since they won't see abuse the paint should last quite a while.
when cleaning the windshield, a word of caution, support the center or you might end up with a nice LONG crack down the middle ... Mitch can attest to this.
flipped over and what do we find? some individual didn't know how to install a windshield some time in the past, rips at every corner and, as expected, rust all along the bottom ... new one on order.

She's Mad, yes the stuff compresses well and will bounce right back when the weight is removed. damn good quality stuff.
i did not use the same stuff behind the door panels.
