All the parts I needed were discontinued by Mr. T so I hit up the local auto place. They don't sell calipers but they do have o-ring kits and new pistons. They also have brake hoses that are supposed to work. We will see. So I guess I'll be rebuilding my first set of calipers.
While I was out driving yesterday the clutch was slipping a little around 3K RPM. It was weird it was in such a specific spot. If I have to drop the trans to replace the clutch I'll go ahead and replace all the seals while I have it out.
Pictures to follow when I get to working on the calipers probably next week. Now I'm heading down to work on the LC.

I'm running an o Reilly's caliper on my truck and its been fine

So I just wasted the last two hours trying to get the calipers back together...I'm going to need to pull them back off the truck and back apart. One piston on each side wont go into the cylinder so I can't get the brake pad in...I think I need to emory cloth them down a bit to make them smooth but I really don't want to leak brake fluid everywhere!
I couldn't figure out how to get the new boots on over the pistons either. Effectively I'm just really pissed and wasted two hours of my life...
Thoughts?

Pics? Did you separate the calipers in half? I've been told to never ever do this because they will never go back together right. And the boots are kinda tricky. If they get too chemically saturated they will balloon out and not seat properly. They aren't available by themselves so you gotta snag them at a junkyard.

Correct, calipers should never be split in half.

Well damn. The calipers have definitely been split. A piston was stuck on each set of calipers but you can get them out without splitting them. I wish I would have discovered that sooner. I have new o-rings for everything from a rebuild kit by Oreilly so replaced all the rubber. The boots are IMPOSSIBLE to get back on it seems. I will be tearing the brakes back off the truck Sunday afternoon if the schedule holds. When I get them off the truck and cleaned up I will take some pics.
Thoughts on grabbing a second set of calipers off a junkyard truck and just swapping them??? Dan, do you know the year ranges that would work? I know we have a couple of mid-80 series pickups in the local junkyard right now. Mine are two piston calipers but without looking at the book I can't recall what year they changed brake pad installation style.
Thanks guys. We found out last week that there will be an addition to the household next August so my priority list just got shuffled. I am going to farm out the front main seal work on the 80 allowing me to focus on getting the pickup back up and running. Then I need a shed built so I can clear out the garage so I can move my reloading bench and supplies out of the sunroom into the garage. Then the office/guest room gets moved into the sunroom so that room can become a second Nursery...
The wife is letting me decorate it though so let me know if you have any links to cool Toyota things. I may do a landcruiser/Mechanic/Engineering theme...
Ahhh, life...

79-81 Corona and 79-83 half ton 2wd pickup. Finding used ones will be a significant challenge. I would look for aftermarket rebuilts.

Congratulations!

Back when I had the time and energy to rebuild calipers, I used to split them all the time. Don't know what the big deal is, never had one leak. :meh:

I got the new calipers in the mail this weekend and put them on the truck last night. Using my vacuum bleeder I pulled all the air out and got everything back together. It stops great now with new calipers, discs, and soft lines. I'm sure the new fluid helps too. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the old ones now. Maybe use them as book ends.
I got a quote for the 80 work and it wasn't pretty. I guess that is my next job...see you in the 80 section.

Just to close the loop the calipers from APW were exact replacements of the factory parts. Same brand etc. I drove the truck into work this morning and it stopped great. I sprayed some break free on the rear brake bleed plugs so I can bleed the brakes from the back too. I have no intention at this time to work on the rear drum brakes.
I have every belief that I could have rebuilt the old calipers. I just don't have the time right now. So the moral is that if time is limited buy the refurbished ones from an online retailer. Thanks for all the information and advice y'all. Again, you'll find me posting in the 80 section for a while now...

My border collie Lupa driving the pickup to the dump to get rid of some recycling, the old 80 radiator, and some oil/coolant. She thinks she is in charge. As I've told the wife, she'll go before my dog.

This thread...so full of win. Your truck is so clean, I love it. I will probably be taking the same route hopefully sooner than later- no cruiser but a pickup would be so much more practical over my CRV, looking for a little one like yours or a stripped down taco. Regardless, I was sad to see the front end damage- did anything ever become of it? What tires are/did you put on? Any more pics?

No, nothing ever came of it. Security says they have no footage of the truck throughout the day. Tires are difficult if you want to keep the stock wheels. They are small by today's standards limiting tire options. With everything going on with my 80 I haven't done much to the pickup over the last couple of months. Thanks for the compliments. The truck is constantly getting comments at gas stations etc. it actually gets more comments than the 40. Most people just thought that was a jeep.
