100 too stiff after OME medium lift

Sorry if I'm bringing back an old thread. I don't post very often.

On Black Friday I took advantage of MetalTech4x4's sale of ICON shocks and purchased This: ICON 100 series Stage 1 Kit

I'm trying to figure out what springs I should get to compliment them. Right now I am running Bilstein shocks and my ride is rigid as hell. Trying to get a little lift and soften up the ride a little bit.

Depends on the height of lift you want and the loads you carry. If you don't want any change in lift, just install shocks.

What springs are you currently running?
I feel like my IronMan Foam Cells rode softer than the OME and in some respects softer than the Icon Stage 1s. With a load the stage 1s are great. I'm running OME springs and bars. I also have a front and rear bumper with a tire carrier

I could be wrong, but won't you need some sort of spring retention?

I have 860's with Icon Stage 2's and had to add 15mm spacers because the springs were loose at full droop....not enough to fall out, but I wonder what the height difference is of 860's and factory springs, uncompressed.

I did not read the measurements of the Stage 1 shocks you guys are talking about. If they are longer than stock you may need additional bump stop or retain the coil or both. You really need to put the shocks on, flex out the truck and measure. Generally you pick coils by payload needs and ride height preferences, then go from there.

I ran 863 coils (no spacers) and Radf**l shocks that measured out to an OME L shock length. I had to retain my coils.

Took advantage of that sale too! I have new 866's sitting in my garage and also the OME TBs. Uncertain how it will ride.

Me is confused too! I need shocks to better control the rear when towing and after spending hours on Mud I have no idea what to get. I'm just going to add a bunch of heavy duty bungee straps :flush:

Heavy duty shocks for towing, without thinking about the springs too, is a sub-optimal solution, especially for the 99+% of the miles that you're not towing. Consider airbags for inside the springs to stop the bounce from starting in the first place. I run OEM shocks on OEM springs and 30 mm spacers on one rig, and 865's with OME shocks on the other, both with Airlift airbags. My daughter tows 2 or 3-horse trailers with both, and when the bags are inflated, the ride is nicely controlled with either rig. Shocks are only half the battle. If you're running old, sagged OEM springs, I would bet you're gonna do a lot of crazy bouncing, regardless of the shock.

Good advice. Agreed that springs and shocks need to be considered together. I like the Airlift approach (and they are made in my town), but I don't like the idea of removing the bumpstop to install the bags. I do bottom out the OEM suspension on some of the roads I frequent. Having nothing there seems to invite major damage?

You have bags there all the time.

I am following this thread for info as its a topic of interest. Agree that the shocks and spring have to be planned together to meet the desired goals.

I guess what be best for gurus here (and lurkers / future searchers) is to post three shock spring combos from stiff, medium and soft along with their optimal application PLUS importantly which part numbers and where to buy.

I'm leaning toward new OEM springs and Airlift air bags in the rear and Ironman gas shocks all around. That should make a big difference in the ride while towing. Just working out details and clearances. I've got a questions into Metal Tech on the shocks. If that all comes to pass, I'll post back with details.

I'm still adding armor. I have the Slee OME 1.5" medium lift kit with diff drop and SPC UCAs. Mike at BIOR made and installed a beautiful set of sliders and skid plates. It handles better now. Probably a couple of bumpers and I'll be there. If not, it's ICON Stage 3s for me.

Once i start my suspension upgrade im going to to go with Iron Man 4x4. I wont go for the pros as i dont do any hardcore wheeling. Too many bad reviews on OME's. I have always like Bielsteins but from the reviews here they are too short and dont have the travel.

Of course, this will depend on my towing. I do plan to tow a small camper big enough for 4.

After a LOT of reading in here I think I'm going to go with either spacers or 865s in the rear with cranked OEM t bars and new OEM shocks. Hopefully this nets 1.5 lift with close to stock ride quality.

If you are just using it on the street and not loading the truck that should be fine. Remember tires will play a big part in "stock ride quality".

This post is perfect timing for me, read the whole thing and have a quick questions on the Fox 2.0's for those who have or know someone who has them. I am getting ready to lift my 2001 LC, and was originally going with full OME as i had on a previous Tacoma. I am now going to piece together a lift with Slee DIff drop, 860's, OME T Bars and these Fox 2.0 shocks.

I need help with part numbers everyone is using. The fox website and other "offroad" websites quote 985-24-066 for front and 985-24-067 for rear, for 0-1.5' lift. No option for a 2.5 inch lift. I checked AutoAnything for pricing and they show part numbers as 985-24-070 front and 985-24-073 rear...these fit a lift of 1.5-2.5". When i cross reference these to the fox catalog these are for an 80 LC.

I've seen a thread on here i cant find now where the guy said his fox shocks were shorter than the OEM one. Will i have any issues with these (assuming) longer shocks on the 100 at a 2.5 inch lift? Is there a difference in the shock design between the 80 and 100 front?
