100 too stiff after OME medium lift

I installed a TJM heavy kit with torsion bars and their matching XGS Gold shocks. even with a not fully built truck (no sliders, bumpers, or dual batteries yet-but I do have drawers, rack, and RTT) the ride is great. it's stiff and hits hard on certain roads, but 80% of the time it is just fine, feels more stable, and is super drivable.

My wife doesn't not like hard riding trucks, and she has given her seal of approval to the ride of the TJMs.

Based on your needs I would re index your existing torsion bars and not go with the heavier OME ones. Once you get bumpers, winch, sliders, racks, etc, then install the OMEs.

So what you're saying is that I can still achieve a 2.5" lift just by re-indexing my OEM torsion bars? For some reason that doesn't make sense to me. What about the rear springs?

Yes absolutely you can. Fronts are torsion bar. You'll need new rear springs to achieve your desired lift.

Just sent my icon Stage 1s in to be softened up a bid. I'm a little picky. But I'll see what happens.

I personally ordered up factory replacements to replace my OME's. Won't have bumpers and all that for awhile, if ever...so it seemed like the logical choice. It will be interesting to see how they work with the OME coils and bars..

I finally got around to swapping out the OME shocks on mine yesterday. Replaced them with OEM's front and rear. I noticed a huge improvement right away, but it's not the same pre-lift comfort...which was expected. Feels like a good happy medium. I'm satisfied.

Interesting. But using oem shocks extended out further will reduce their service life, no?

Just this past week had the ARB1206 kit from Slee offroad applied to my 99 LC. In spite of all the bad press on this set up I am quite pleased with the ride quality. No where near the severe ride some have mentioned. It has firmed up and handles a lot better on the freeway but not as stiff or rough as my stock TRD tundra. Will provide more details in a write up when I have some more experience.

Looks like a set of adjustable shocks may be the best option - keep dialing until you get to the sweet spot for your spring/torsion rate. Someone got a good vendor/part number for the Koni Raid adjustables? Any other adjustable shocks for the 100 series besides these?

Shoot Brian an e-mail, his site list being out of stock but he may have some being shipped in soon. I'm going to put a set on the 96 FZJ80 next year.

Koni 90 Series Shocks

I'm glad I stumbled on this thread. Very informative!

I've had two (fully built) 80 Series set up with HD 3" OME suspensions a 70 and 78 Series with the same setting and all three drove very nice for my needs, both as a DD and Overland Vehicle. I'm used to harsh rides on bad roads, so what might be a nice ride for me, might not be acceptable for others.

Just got a new-to-me 100 Series, and I thought I already had the answer to "which suspension setting you are going to get"... But from what I've read here, it seems the IFS makes this truck a totally different beast to set up suspension-wise.

It would be interesting to know if the OP finally managed to get his rig "just right" and what he ended up doing.

If any inmates with a built 100 Series in the Houston area are willing to trade a ride for some beer and friendly cruiser-talk, please PM me. I'll gladly ride shot gun, just want to check out ride harshness, tire sizes and talk about re-gear ratios, etc.

My plans are to build an expedition rig (F & R bumpers, winch, sliders, roof-top tent, drawers, fridge, etc... So it will be pretty heavy. 2.5" lift for sure, but still debating on wether 275/70R18 or 295/70R18 tires as it is my DD)

@duggy will be at the Nov meeting. He was running 35's, but now I think 33's and I think Fox remote res shocks.

I won't be making it to the meeting, but I'm down to meet another time. I'm running 34's and Icon Stage 2.
Might also be able to get my brother's LX with 34's and non-remote res Fox shocks. His is pretty much empty, with only a Sahara front and I have front/rear bumpers and sliders, etc.

There might be someone at the meeting with OMEs for comparison.

I can say, after living with the TJM heavies for awhile... still not too stiff.

When we first installed them, the Cruiser lived in a commercial garage with cameras so we just left it loaded with camping equipment and everything... Now it parks on the street so I have to unload it an d the HiLift, etc. are out of it... It still doesn't ride too stiff. It does handle quite a bit differently out on the highway at speed... kind of like an elephant floating on some kind of air spring: it isn't horrible, but it's MUCH better loaded up...

@SSinVzla check out the meeting page for our November meeting for Bayou City Cruisers. We are meeting on the 21st and I will be bring my 100 out. There will be a few others there also. You are more than free to take my 100 for a ride. I am loaded down as can be so I think it should give you a good feel. I am pretty happy with the way my 100 rides now.

@HFDPNL let's meet soon! The 100 is totally transformed since you saw it in it's worse state a few months ago.

Thanks HFDPNL that would be great if you can meet another time. The Sahara bar your brother has is actually what I was planning on. (No chrome bar, but I already have a Ramsey Patriot 15.000 Winch which is pretty heavy).
Let me know when you are available.

Thanks buggy. I'll be there.
My 100 is totally stock with good working OEM suspension which will give us a good point for comparison. Being used to built rigs, I actually do not like how it rides, but comparing a stock 80 with this stock 100, it does ride smoother so I am looking forward to putting some good suspension on it as she should ride much better if done right!

Did you check the OEM shocks for length extended vs the OMEs? Just wondering. My truck (1.5" SLEE OME medium lift kit with diff drop and SPC UCAs) is a little stiff. I'm having Mike at BIOR make me skid plates, so that additional weight might soften the ride just enough. If not I'd definitely consider the OEMs if they are as long extended as the OMEs

We'll try to swing by with my son's TLC. It's currently a "lightweight" with the basic OME 865 (1.5 Medium)/OME torsion bars (@ 21.5)/OME Sport Shocks/SPC UCA. Probably the worst case with the OME setup, but might be useful for your comparison. It's a little stiff and does ride better with additional passengers and/or cargo.

We're planning on an ARB bar and winch late Nov or early Dec, but probably won't have them on by the meeting.
