It looks great- elegant, simple, intuitive controls. So in this rendering, the "security strip" which houses the security LED/outside and inside temp/Time is deleted. I'm guessing that disconnecting the security LED doesn't effect the system in any way- I'd like to see it on the dash, should be easy to drill a hole and install the LED wherever makes sense, ya?

Losing the security light affects nothing at all until/unless you need it to diag another problem

I was swapping the Teyes unit from my old/parts 100 to my new one today, and it seems like the factory tape deck is still involved in getting sound, even if only controlling the amp and volume. Just flagging that it seems like losing the factory tape deck will mean a bit more figuring out and some rewiring may be needed.
If I remember correctly from doing my Teyes install, power routes through the factory tape deck. In fact I think the volume knob works maybe as a mute control. So yeah there definitely is some bypassing that needs to happen.

The render doesn't show the outside temp, is that something that is being considered? I'd hate to not have that.

Hard to believe, but we are now about 150 days into this project and just under 500 people on the waitlist.

A few updates:
  • The PCB prototype is close to 100% finalized
  • The LCD, knobs, buttons, connectors, and mounting locations are packaged together
  • The rear housing is modeled
  • The LCD layout is tested for temperature, fan speed, mode, A/C, AUTO, recirc, and defrost status
  • The design direction has been simplified so the LCD carries the status information instead of adding a bunch of separate LED indicators
Current target is to have the first assembled prototype in hand and installed in my own truck for physical testing within the 30 days.

Since you are making GREAT progress, I’m going to start looking for a head unit. What are the size parameters on what will fit. I assume double DIN and what is the largest screen size that will fit in the space? Also, when do you plan on making the initial units available and will you be going off of your sign up list?
Lots of questions but it looks like this will become a reality very soon.
Thanks, Doug

9.5–10 inch range is probably going to be the practical upper limit, depending on the specific head unit and how the screen overhangs the dash.

I have not fully decided which head unit I am going to use yet but am considering a higher-spec Android-based double DIN unit, likely one of the better China-manufactured units, then flashing it with custom firmware rather than just running it as-is.

The main things I want from a head unit are:
  • Android-based system
  • Wireless CarPlay
  • Front and rear camera support
  • Possible OBD2/MPX display integration to regain some of the useful functions lost when deleting the OEM nav screen, like the fuel economy display.
No firm sale timeline yet. I need to validate fitment, button feel, knob feel, LCD readability, rear clearance, and actual HVAC behavior before calling anything ready. And yes, I do plan to go off the sign-up list when initial units are available.

Sorry LC guys, but the first batch will be for LX.

Quick update:
In 24~ hours the waitlist has now passed 300+ submissions, far beyond what I expected this early.

The comments have honestly been the best part. A few anonymous highlights...

“I present my LX as a sacrificial lamb.”
“Keep up the good work and thank you for helping save my marriage.”
“I’ve been telling my girlfriend all about it. I don’t think she cares, but she’s a good sport.”
“I’m really excited about this project having something other than the Chinese iPad things.”
“The current aftermarket solutions to this problem all... kinda suck.”
“Happy to be a test dummy or buy when they are complete.”
“Been waiting a looooong time for something like this.”
“Would love to get a real head unit and delete the tape deck.”

On the development side, the schematic is now very close to being locked.

One of the biggest remaining real-world items is the harness/connector strategy. The goal is still a clean plug-and-play install with no cutting of the factory wiring, so we are being careful about validating the correct mating connectors rather than rushing into a hacked-together harness.

If anyone has deep experience sourcing Toyota/Yazaki/Sumitomo-style connectors, or 100 Series dash harness connector identification, that is one area where community knowledge may help.
I don't have deep experience sourcing them but I have looked into it a bit and the Metra (Walmart, Autozone/Oreillys/ etc, Amazon) versions are everywhere and I think are cheap enough to use for the housings if need be, obviously just need to find the right ones. Metra Electronics | Products - https://www.metraonline.com/vehicle-fit-guide/2004/Toyota/Land%20Cruiser. It may be a case of ordering a few different pre-wired adapters from some of those places (and Crutchfield, too) to see what actually jives and what doesn't to come up with the least modifications. I would happily get a few to donate to the cause and send if you want to dm me an address.

After seeing they think my truck has 6x8s and 6x9s, I’d be cautious about Metra.

Five prototype units are officially submitted, approved, and under production now. Only intended for real-world fitment, install, and function testing.

I’ll be selecting a couple people from the waitlist in the coming weeks who specifically marked themselves as interested in beta testing their ’03–’07 LX470s, so keep an eye out for an email.

Side note: does anyone have an ’03–’07 Land Cruiser JBL cassette receiver they would be willing to sell or loan out? Help get the LC side sorted sooner rather than later.

Hi there,

Are you planning for it to have wireless Android auto in addition to the car play? I assume so, but just checking!

Thanks
