Exactly. Trying to figure out how to prevent that from happening again. Leo was able to walk right up the same trails I slipped on and his 80 was fairly stock triple locked.

Leo drinks more....

Yeah, I know there are people that love to ride their wagons on the rocks but I'd save that $2000 and not go on trails like that.

I've managed to log a thousand or so miles off road in my 100 and have only a rear locker.

I know this isn't an option but for those looking at getting a 100 series I'd choose ATRAC over one locker though. It's pretty awesome.

Somebody said it earlier... apples and oranges. I have been genuinely shocked at what a triple locked 80 with a little lift and some tires can do in the hands of a capable driver but they don't hold a candle to what the 100 can boast as its strengths. If you want to cruise at 80mph, not fret over hills, tow a trailer, etc the 100 is a better bet. Not much you can do to an 80 to make it behave like a 100 or vice versa.

Edit-repowering an 80 would get you close

I'm taking the repowered 80 approach. Yall stay tuned.

A re-powered 80 (even just the 5.3 in my 60 makes the 100 feel sluggish) with a proper 4" lift, 35's, and the low t-case gear set would probably be the best all-rounder you could have and would go pretty much anywhere you'd want to take something with sheet metal. The only downside to an 80 (as a base platform) IMO is that the drivers cockpit feels a little cramped. The upside of the smaller size is that narrow, off-camber shelf roads aren't as sketchy.

That said, just about any of these trucks (40,55,60,70,80,100) with a 3 inch lift, 33s, a little armor, and a rear locker will go 95% of the places you'd want to take it. Driving experience will take you further than adding a front locker or bigger tires.

Can't speak directly to 100 series, but in my FJC A-Trac gets me where I want to go. I've used the rear locker about 10 times in that many years and mostly as a "might as well try" kind of situation. In actuality, the rear locker has gotten me unstuck only a handful of times. The most recent memory was at K2 when both front wheels were in the air, as I was slightly high centered...a little bump from rear locker and back on all 4's again.

So dumb question here. What makes an 80 perform so much better on a trail than a 100? Is it the front and rear lockers? Is that just one of many things?

I see you can get one of these for a 100 and could drop it in mine to give it front and rear e-lockers and not have to fool with air lines and compressors: A10976 Harrop Eaton ELocker™

That said, if I ever blow out my front diff I would much much much rather have this than an ARB in there to replace it.

Which is fairly likely at some point as heavy as my truck is.

Would do 4.88's then too which opens up another major can of worm$$$

Cool. Thanks for the info and discussion. I'm guessing a winch would be a better investment for sticky situations I may see. What size winch is suggested for a big boned 100? Would be cool to find a hidden mount for stock bumper.

ATRAC works well when you learn how to throttle it. I wheeled for years on a YJ with a welded rear and a lockright up front. the ATRAC engages to me very similar to a lockright. Usually, it will lock up with a little slippage and throttle

I bought one of the TJM winch mounts that I'm going to install badlands 12k winch on behind the stock bumper. I'm going to have it gusseted up first in case of side pulls.
OEM Bumper Winch Mount
I have a 12.5k on my truck. Because...it was on sale.
These are heavy pigs, especially when all expo'ed out. I wouldn't run anything but a 12k+ winch

Some are....some are not.....Some articles on Mud about which ones. I bought a set yesterday off of CL that clear fine, but had to read up on them before I bought the wrong ones, ha!

What thread did you see the info on? Do these work?
4 mudgrip tires & wheels
