Need just a quick answer on this one. I am going to be doing an H55 5 speed/2f/split tc dtrain in my pig project. I know I need a TC from an fj60, 85 and later which will have the larger idler shaft. I plan to buy a new H55 from toyota. I remember reading that there are certain TC that WONT WORK but can't remember why? I searched and could not find the info. I think it had something to do with the donor FJ60 being a diesel? does that sound right? I think I remember that I can't use a split TC from an FJ60 diesel model truck because it is somehow different, something about an oiler cup that lubes the 5th gear?.

If anyone can clarify on the exact TC it would be appreciated. I gotta stop drinking.

so I am trading some parts from a guy whom has an fj60 split tc from an 86 fj60, his mechanic says it is in good rebuildable shape. Does this TC sound like it is the one I need for the H55 swap? Any other things i should be looking out for? He says it is "supposed" to be out of an 86, nice guy, not that I don't trust him but are there any identifying marks on the tranny that I can look for to ensure it is the one I need? I also plan to take off the inspection plate (if there is one?) and try to take a look at the gears. Sorry, not familiar at all with the fj60 and it's parts.

Thanks,

Noah

Have your tcase guy measure the diameter of the counter shaft...

38MM will be the later unit

34MM will be the earlier unit

You want the later unit.

There is a bunch of wrong info here. If you want the 38mm idler, it's 4/86 and later only.

All the split cases will work for sure 84 and up and I think most of 83 as well. ie they have the casting for the oiler cup.

It is a pain to adapt an 88-90 vacuum shift case, but it can be done with some parts replacement. I wouldn't do it.

If you absolutely must have the 38mm idler case, the only way to know is to measure the idler shaft.

If it has a vacuum shifter, it's from and FJ62, and in my opinion, you don't want that.

34mm cases are more plentiful, and I've never heard of a broken one. But I agree, everything else being equal, you want the 38mm idler case. I used an 87 case with my H55, and it turned out great.

No matter what case you use, you need the shift linkage from 85-87. That is critical, trust me.

Rebuilding a split case is suprisingly easy-have fun.

If you are putting this in an FJ40/55, you will need to fab a cross member to support the tranny.

The fj40 I currently drive has a h55 mated to a tcase that came out of a 85 fj60 but sounds like the 87 may be a better setup.:) Make sure you get the fj60 flanges as well. I would stay away from any diesel component unless you have strong evidence it will work. I also heard there is a difference between a diesel vs. gasoline 5 speed trannies I just don't remember what.

Hey Steve, howz it?

so help a big dummy out here (that dummy being me, :)

I am unfamiliar with what exactly the idler shaft / counter shaft is? same thing, correct? if one were to measure it, where would it be located and how would one measure it exactly? any pics would be helpful. Thanks for everyone's responses. I need to make sure this thing is the one I need.

why is this critical? and by shift linkage you mean just the shifter and associated rods / retainer on the transfer case?

Noah

Counter shaft protrudes out the rear of the split transfer case, right in the middle of it.

Put a caliper on it to measure...

If this is still foggy, I will post up pics Wed...

actually the vacuum shift conversion is fairly simple but does require drilling and tapping the front part of case for detent ball system (use search function, I think it's in diesel section).

$100 or so in parts...

The companion flanges that the drive shafts attach to...

so I am going to go with the man a fre e brake conversion kit on the split transfer case, this should give me what I need in order to bolt up the driveshaft correct, so therefore I will not need the stock flange?

Here is a teaser pic. The idler shaft is the shaft in the middle. It sticks through the back of the case, and so can be measured with no disassembly.

Poser-I posted a bunch of pics and progress reports in the 60's section, but never put together a full report. I have always meant to do that, since I kept the pictures. I'm also confident now that I did it all correctly, as I have almost 15k miles on the set up and it's still all good. The hardest part of the job was getting the output preload in spec, and I had to install and disassemble the output bearing housing 4 times. What suprised me most about the gears, is that despite their 110k miles (on the doner) the gears themselves looked brand new. More proof that Toyota builds good stuff.
