After researching the forum on rear bumper/carriers, a friend of mine introduced me to a custom fab guy ~ I finally took the plunge! The guy who fabbed it for me was very accomodating about building to the specs/options I was looking for. He used 1/4" steel - which after seeing the 3/16th's ARB front get dented - was desired. My requests: Mount the tire to the right (personal preference/smaller carier mechanism/less restricted view) and positioned where the bottom of the tire is just above the top of the bumper. He designed the carrier to have a cradle and a large center coarse threaded mount which a poly cone and spinner handle was used. The unit is secured down by a hole drilled through the assembly in the rear and locked. WAY easier to remove/install the big spare with this design! Under the rear corners I had him add extra plating underneath (since thats where I seem to hit). The exhaust was then cut and rerouted over the frame rail (keeping the resonator) and exited out the bumper itself. This keeps my exhaust out of harms way now. I included an integrated receiver and had the electrical trailer connection built into the bumper as well for clearance and protection. Also added rocker protection hoops. The recovery points are actually plating that mounts to the frame then sandwiched by two metal layers to give it thickness. This way you are pulling direct to the frame instead of a weld. In all, the bumper I always wanted :bounce:.

Nice bumper. I also like the exhaust routing. I still need to figure out what to do ith my tail pipe/resonator.

What kind of $$ did that set you back? Did you have it powder coated?

Very nice, I like the exhaust outlet detail. How did you secure the spare?

Thanks for indulging me - boys and their toys you know....

What I ended up doing was to drill into the main center stud housing and going through both the stud and the housing allowing me to padlock it. Like this:

I havent powder coated it yet - just flat black paint for now.

That looks perfect to me.

Well, add a bike rack and then perfect.

Very nicely done. I think it's the best mix of ideas I've seen on here.

I like it , and definitely the exhaust outlet.

You add an antenna mount and a aux rear light mount and I would call it the perfect bumper.

Sick Murf, That looks awsome!

way to go dude, looks awesome. But we need a price man!! Who did it for ya? The person did the whole bumper and carrier?

Nice job and very attractive rig. Where are you going to mount the license plate? Is the end of tailpipe attached to bumper or does it float? Seems like you'd get vibration transfer from exhaust to bumper. Looks well protected, though.

Thanks, I made an aluminum bracket extension that positioned the plate left of the original spot but still gets fully lit from the factory plate lights. Here is a pic with the CSC  group trail run last month for an example. The plate can be clearly seen from behind and slight right as well. the only problem(?) I can see if one of the hundreds of unmanned speed cameras our governor likes so well (gotta make that budget! But I digress...) the tire just, maybe, possibly block the view from the shoulder view.

You are dead on for the tailpipe ~ I did get some occasional transfer from the float design so he solid mounted the end of the pipe and put in a section of flexpipe to compensate for the exhaust movement. That solved it.

AZRider: One of our local Phoenix residents! A young guy with access to a full fabricating machine shop and a shop at his home. Ive recently saw him complete a sick 4 link jeep that showed his talents. He is working on a coworkers 40 and has done all kinds of mods from minor to major. He says he can build a rear bumper for an 80 series from $800 to $1500 tops depending on the design wishes of the owner. Az Mudders: PM me if you are interested - he would love to do more.

I love it! I have threatened to build one like that for over a year but mine would look more "industrial/utilitarian" than professional and awesome.

Looks awesome

really clean bumper and it looks awesome but what happens if you decide to go a bigger size tire down the road would it fit in the cradle?

That is awesome. Does the tire carrier cradle allow for a larger tire if you choose to up size? Seems like your limited to 35's now.

That is a great looking bumper!

Very nice - very much along the lines of what I've been thinking of. Could you take some more pics of the receiver? Looks like you must have cut the rear frame member?
