Let me start off by saying that I have read and searched and found several similar situations to what my pig is doing but no definitive answer. I Have a two part question.... I will start with some hsitory.

1. 78 2F (desmogged) in a 72 pig carcass

2. Ran fine until late this summer. Would start and idle fine but choke out when I pressed the gas sometimes. If it decided to run and drive a few miles, it would stall out when coming to a stop or slowing down to stop.

3. Had Rochester Carb on it so after careful consideration sent off for a Jim C rebuild (76 Canadian). Gotta be better than the Rosty, right!?;)

4. Hooked it all up and checked for leaks around base fo the carb and the intake manifold (none), got all the vacuum lines ran to the right place (desmogged so only a few).

5. Starts and idles fine but runs the same. Jim suggested checking the vacuum advance. After further review it is DEAD.

6. Put a WTB 78 dizzy in the classifieds and have had a few MUDDER responses. Most promissing was from ofkilter.

7. He has a 78 dizzy from a canadian pig with part number 19100-61091. Mine is 19100-61100. They look different. First question is will ofkilter's dizzy work for me? If not what would you suggest?

8. Autozone has what they claim is a Reman Toyota for $115. plus core (120)...but if it ends up being the wrong one I am SOL and cannot return it. Seeing as though there are two different dizzys just between Ofkilter and I, it seems a little risky as my experience with box stores are not good. Dealership is a no go!

9. Question number two is if you have any other thoughts of what could be giving me problems.

10. We have done the timing on the pig and the plugs look good. I will check to see if we are at 650 RPM for idle speed, but do not have a tach. It idles great though. I can keep it running in my garage long enough to poison myself. It just does not "roll" well.

Thanks for the input!

Alot of people, including myself, have had this similar problem. When my truck was doing what yours is, all my ignition parts/ fuel delivery parts were old and worn out. I replaced it all with new parts, dizzy, coil, carb, fuel filter, plugs and wires. I haven't had that problem since. Take a look at those things and maybe think about replacing it all. Good luck.

No thoughts at all?

Other than the cost, why not have Jim C. hook you up w/correct dizzy ??

If he thinks that's your problem that's where I would put my $$.

When you replaced your dizzy where did you get it? And the coil? Mine is looks to be the original!

The world parts catalog shows the 1978 CA spec trucks as having electronic ignition, like US truck. But they do carry the different PN, because they have a performance advance curve.

Can you post a pic of the Canada dissy so we'll know for sure?

Here are the pics Duke sent me. What do you think? Like I said.... Mine is 19100-61100. I actually pulled the stciker off minw as it was just dangling there!

I had a similar problem on my 77 desmogged cruiser...... I was under the hood one day and moved the coil wire and walla no problems.... the piss me off part is it was new wires, coil, plugs, cap rotor treatment 6 months before the problem arouse and having changed all that you figure got to be something else.....

have you checked the condition of the engine ground? Hot coil could maybe do it. Can you swap in a known good one for testing? And if that dizzy IS the canadian hi perf advance curve electronic small cap world market super dizzy that Jim mentioned, you should get it and its correct coil/igniter.:) Good luck this year.

What do you think Jim? Would it work?

So because I am not very mechanically inclined, but am learning, I will not need a new igniter and coil to work with this dizzy. My existing one should work?

Yes, the 78 CA dissy will trigger your 78 USA coil/ignitor.

The only minor glitch is that the CA dissy has a 3-pin connector and the USA ignitor has a 2-pin connector.

The simple, correct fix is to remove the 3-pin connector shell and replace w/ the 2-pin connector shell, deleting the ground wire.

Hey all-

Spent all day on the 55 today with dad. Pulled the dizzy. Confimend the vacuum advance was indeed frozen up (rusty). Dizz had some rust from moisture that had gotten in somehow and at some point, so we took it all apart and cleaned it up and got the vacuum advance to work again (confirmed with Jim C test). Put everything back together and hooked it up. Started it up drove around the block and.....it does the same thing. Very sad and discouraged.

Had a couple of local Toyota junkies come over to take a look. After another two hours they left stumped also. I had four dudes in the garage who IMO knew a lot about not only engines, but TOYOTA!!! Took it for a spin and it did the same thing while they were driving (why wouldn't it though?!??)

We did however figure out that the idle solenoid was working only intermitantly when given 12V. Could this be the problem? "the problem", not sure, but I will be ordering a new one and crossing that off the list. Any more suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for helping me through this!

Reading thru the entire thread, especially the part about how you have the same experience with both the Roch carb and the Aisan makes me think it's NOT a carb problem either.

I have always been a little leery of the ignitor setups on these cruisers so, I would look into a way to replace or bypass THAT as the first line of inquiry at this stage, rather than replacing the distributor.

Just a hunch.

Really doubtful that the idle solenoid is a problem.

Like Mark said, if the problem persists w/ 2 different carbs and a repaired dissy, it's not the carb or dissy.

The coil or ignitor is the next thing to test. The 78-80 coils are supposed to run w/ a ballast resistor. If yours has been running off straight 12V+ for a while, maybe the coil is cooked. The symptom of dieing after running at speed can indicate an overheated or weak coil.
