Well not long after moving I went away for a few months and covered the FJ with a tarp cause it was winter. When I got back the top had gotten quite moldy and I scrubbed up best I could. Well now I have removed it while the fj is getting painted and did a rub a dub in the tub on it

next I painted on this canvas product off of EBAY --the pics show the cleaned top and the product while it is still drying so the color is not final yet and I will need to get more --probably at least 2 or 3 more cans

Color seems pretty close to the original Eshan Tan
it was called desert tan on the site

First, here is the scrubbed top

black mold

a little black mold that stained the top and starting to apply the product

tools of the trade

just rolled it on with a foam brush and if you are careful you can do around the windows with a brush
looks a little splotchy but as it dries it evens out and gets a little more solid in color--

empty now

once it dries completely I will post it up before another coat goes on so you can see the difference each coat makes. It can be thinned with water too if you wanted to be careful in building up the color to how you wanted it--I am going to put 3 coats on I think

so that will probably ad up to 6 cans in the end

pretty happy with the difference and I was thinking I would have to go to a dark color to cover up the spots of mold etc but it is coming out pretty good

if I had to do this every couple of years it wouldnt bother me

I plan to wax the seams with beeswax and as a topcat use a waterproofer like scotchguard or one of the spray on waterproofers like that

more to follow

after about an hour

dye

Well I did some googlin on it and it seemed difficult to either do or get good results, this also contains waterproofing wax and fungicide.

Do you have any experience with dye that you could share with us? I'd be interested in seeing it done successfully

I dont think this is a permanent solution but if it lasts a couple years I'd be happy

my rig is getting painted and I needed to spruce up the top to match for sure:)

Nice one mate. Came up really well. Are you planning to do the inside of the top as well?

Looks like that stuff is the same as the UK Mil "Tent Refresher" (Mystox TRP), but repackaged. The spelling mistakes on the laser printed label are a dead giveaway that some bloke has been hard at work with a funnel and a 25 litre drum of the stuff so he can peddle it on ebay.

Should last for a while and SHOULDN'T damage your canvas.

shipping

they would probably ship cept it would cost about what the product costs. Lets see how it looks in a year eh?

but still I am glad to see it spruced up in any case

B,
After your experience with the roller application of this product, how do you think that it would go on with a sprayer?:hhmm: Of course as you mention, you need to be careful around the windows, but in terms of ease of application, what do you think, is a sprayer a viable option?

sprayer

the manuf calls for a brush or roller. I think it works it in better using the brush or roller as opposed to just laying on the top and being allowed to soak in. In this case I think the manual application might be best.

thanks

Thanks Troll

I got some more and hopefully will finish the top this weekend

second coat

Okay 3 more cans and doing the sides and second coat on the top--started on the inside

5 cans

so far it has taken about 5 cans and I figure 3 more as they are pretty small

also I want to work it into the seams

no sense in spreading it thin, it has waterproofing wax in it

looks a little bit blotchy on the top in these photos cause it is drying it evens out when all the way dry--on the bottom that is just the first coast so it wont have good solid color until the second coat

seems to be making quite a difference and the material is not going all stiff
