Instrument Clusters - will '70 cluster work in a '74?
http://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-classif...ml#post3846218
My odo does not work on my '74. Will Orange's cluster from a '70 Pig work?
My cluster has idiot light for Amps and Brake - his has Amp guage, not sure if his has parking idiot light...

that speedo will have a screw in cable, your 74 will likely be a clip on. also, that gauge cluster with the amp gauge is pre 7/'70 style before the ammeter went away until 9/'75

Pighead picked up a few gauge clusters at the Stockton swap meet recently. Will check and see if there's a '74ish looking speedo in the box...

It's not that big of a deal to disassemble, clean and reassemble the odometer. Takes about 30 minutes - or so I've been told. There's a post somewhere on how to do it IIRC

Hmm, not finding it by searching title in the Pig section - I will go check the 40 section...
Do you remember anything about the thread that will help me search?

Speedo
Here's the speedo, the only thing is this may be for a later year. Before I decided to do the Ram Jet and H55 I was going to put in a 4 speed trans. Does the 4speed or H55 required a different speedo? I bring this up because we ordered the H55 from Seth PVCruisers, there's a part number and his name on this speedo. If this will work let me know and I'll ship it out tomorrow.

I am not sure, can anyone speak to this? Does this speedo look like it will work with a '74 Pig cable?
Lou, if you ordered it for a '74, I would think it would work for mine, unless you told him you were going to swap to a different speedo cable...
What is the build date on your '74? I have a Jan '74 Pig.

I think Seth sent this with a new speedo cable, IPOR ordered everything and that was a few years ago.
Marshall can probably figure it out maybe he'll chime in. I'd have to check the build date. I can call Lance at IPOR
in the morning if someone doesn't figure it out tonight.

So it looks different than the one that Orange posted up...
Lets hope Marshall weighs in!

The threaded speedo cable/speedometer fitting was used on the earlier rigs to my knowledge(up to 9/72?) The speedometer housing that Lou has is obviously a clip fit which will coincide with your 74 pig's cable. Why not pull your instrument cluster or reach up behind to determine what type of connection is used?

Here's a comparison for you - two early threaded verses the clip attachment

Lou,
I just noticed the 1/10's digit wheel is black - do you know if this cluster has been apart before?
The odo in my '74 has a white 1/10's digit wheel.
Anyone else have a black 1/10's digit wheel?

I have no idea, based on the info on the side of the speedo, thats probably not the speedo that came with the truck.
I hope it works for you.
Lou

Alright, so I dig into the speedo head Lou sent me to prepare myself for pulling my cluster out.
I got some dry graphite lube to rebuild the odometer with and then tore into my cluster.
My odometer was very sticky, crusty, hard to turn over.
I married my odometer with Lou's because I wanted to keep the white 1/10's digit wheel.
I also took some pictures!!!
I have to warn you all that I overdo things when it comes to documenting projects with pictures.
I use MUD a lot when I am on travel for work. So at a time when I am miles away from my Cruiser, I like to research my next project. For me, being able to see as much detail as possible helps me prepare my mind for my next project.
So here are a few pics of tearing down an odometer:

So the above post shows the speedo head mounted in the cluster, the slotted screws that secure the outer glass onto the case, and then the phillips screws that keep the speedo guts in the housing.
You must remove all to get the speedo apart.
Next I will show the little metal clip that positions the odometer spindle in place. When Lou shipped me his, this clip had come loose and then got stuck somewhere else in the speedometer!
Lastly, I show how the odometer positions itself on the metal framework that the speedo face screws to

Next up: showing where the metal clip rides on the spindle, removing the odo drive gear, and then removing the spring clip.

That last pic in the previous post also gives you the orientation that the wheels need to follow in order to be successfully re-installed.
Each digit wheel has a side that has all teeth, then a side that has one set of teeth. Those little bitty plastic gears sandwiched between the wheels trip the next digit over every cycle...
Now lets look at the washer at the end of the spindle, disassembled for cleaning and orienting the intermediary gears for reassembly.

Those intermediary gears only fit one way in order for everything to line up. They have tall teeth and short teeth in an alternating fashion. Having the short teeth oriented out worked for me because I was reassembling the odometer at 00000.0.
When reassembling, don't forget the little washer that rides between the drive gear and speedometer chassis. Then catch the metal tabs on the bracket that secures the speedo face.
I put graphite on the drivetrain for the odometer - a seies of gears and worm drives.
Don't forget to check your light bulbs while you are in there!
