wrenching weekend

I have a set of Harbor Freight heavy duty stands that work great.

On grease, Erik had me buy some disk brake grease. I bought a 5 lb tub on Amazon. Actually, I need some more, so let me know if you get other advice on what to buy. I wonder if an 80' takes different grease?

Thanks!

I found this:

Cliff notes version:

All the links at the top are "recommended" by readers. One guy who claims to be in the industry prefers the Caterpillar with Calcium Sulfate in it vs Lithium. Looks like the 80 FSM also recommends the Moly Lithium like the 60.

Price per gun tube for what I can readily find:

Redline Syn: 11.94
Valvoline: 4.74
Megaplex xd5: 8.30
John Deere: 3.84
Mystik: 5.34

But the topic is about as interesting as "which oil is the best."

That's a pretty good deal. I will go in on that for sure. We need ~ 2lbs which would be like 3 tubes. That would give us two tubes for the other stuff - perfect! Thanks!

Very good. Just to confirm that is 3 tubes for both sides. I don't think I used up half of my 7 lb tub last time...

I just ordered a case of 10 sticks.

Yea three tubes per vehicle gives us two tubes each for drive shafts, etc.

I have a ton of latex-like gloves too that I will bring.

Someone suggested using a spatula, as well. I'm sure my wife would love me taking one of her Pampered Chef spatulas out LOL.

Thanks for ordering 2F! I'll follow up via PM on payment.

Well staging for the weekend has begun!!!

Sage made it over with the frame. Question to Erik- do you want him to come over a couple days early (Tuesday or Wednesday) and start sandblasting the bad sections?

if he's free? or do we want to get it patched, rolling on axles and take it to your "blaster"
or should we just POR it? once it's rolling? i'm fine either way.. por is faster and cheaper. so if he's free then yes that would be great.

I think it is too rusty to just POR it, but it depends on his intent. If he is keeping it for a while, why not spend a little money and protect it forever?

Let me call the blaster. If it is cheap, why not??? Blasting is not all that fun, and for a big job like that it could really make a mess for all of us.

I could strap it to my trailer that I need blasted and take it over there to do at the same time.

I also want to do the front axle that I am going to rebuild, so maybe take them all over. If they can't get to everything, oh well. There is always some touch up to do -- if you even care.

My only thought is if you want to patch the bad spot before we take it to the blaster, such that we can paint it when it gets back without much prep.

my thoughts on that frame is to get his axles and springs under it, engine in it. frame fixed. while it's geting blasted or whatever we paint his cab and bed. if we source an IFS steering box i'd like to get the box mount on at the same time. Colin and i can come up with a game plan.

Are you saying that you want to sandblast when you have an engine on it?

I am confused???

If I get the blaster out next week, I might hit the section you are wanting to patch.

so I guess that's a no go for launch to get the motor in it? Can we get it rolling and move the motor a bit later at your place? or we can haul old drivetrain back and swap here?

I am never going to back down from a challenge.....

Bottom line, we can do this however you want.... just how good of a job do you want to do??

If it were mine, I would say get this to the blasters a few days before the weekend. My Tuesday should be a half day at work, and i am taking the rest of the week off. If someone can come over those days, we could blast that area, patch the frame and get it to the blaster, or spend the half day blasting it in the driveway.

I have a couple quarts of POR 15, or we could get some of that black epoxy and blow it. That way it would be ready for the engine swap on Saturday.

As far as coming back to work on it.... HELL YA! I can always spend more time in the shop... (can you hear my shaking hands from the shop withdrawl?)

is it a possibilty to get it to the blasters? That would make life MUCH easier.. I'm not sure of sage's schedule but i'll check.

I will look for the blasters phone number and see what his schedule is like.

Also, put the call in to get the primer.

For those that have used it, whats the actual usable dry time of POR15. The "official" answer is 3-6 hours, but I've read it can take much longer (and Erik is planning on spraing it if that makes a difference). Say if we were to get it blasted before the weekend, do the patch and swap axles over on Friday, paint Friday afternoon, then would it be dry to start moving over the running gear and cab on Saturday or is that an unrealistic timeline?

we can always shoot it after motor is in . saran wrap is cheap.

OK. We may not get around to shooting until saturday anyway, I know we're going to have to move over or fab up bed mounts onto the frame, and maybe a couple of cab mounts since we're going regular to xtra cab.

Yeah, if we are welding on it, that makes sense to wait to paint.

So, is the plan to have the blaster blast it then before the weekend, then we patch, weld finish the frame, throw on the engine, and then paint?
