Extended shackles up front to do a poor man lift, Totally screwed up my steering on the road. As quickly as it went in it got ripped out.
Detroit locker, I know many swear by them but full time locker sucks because there are many times it's made the situation worse. Snow and ice wheeling is a perfect example, when you're in an off-camber situation and the vehicle just wants to go sideways. Selectable locker is by far the better option.
Chinese LED lights (from SuperLED), one by one they all fell apart right where they were glued together and the dash ones burned out very quickly.
Buying a local rusty truck as opposed to a JDM :D
Belton suspension - now this is a hard one because I do love it and it was great, but it was too flexible. Now I could load up the truck no problem and it didn't sag but it did add to my off camber angle as it allowed for more body roll. Coincindentally, putting the spares (2) on the roof rack for one trip. Bad idea from many sides.
Using aftermarket wheel studs and not Toyota originals ...loosing a rear wheel at 110km/h on the highway sucks a lot.
Overall, most of my crazy ideas actually worked out well.

Hey Fantom, I also did the poor mans lift with extended shackles and yep not a nice ride afterwards, so instead of ripping them out I put 3 degree castor wedges in, cost $40 and fixed up the steering, so still a cheap mod :D

Another worst mod of mine and unfortunately I have a few from my recent rebuild:bang:

I purchased some rubber beading to run around the edge of my flared guards, but it was to stiff and wouldn't sit right, so as a cheap fix I ran a bead of sicaflex between the flare and the car, of course it ended up looking like s***, so I got some soft rubber to do it properly.

Ever tired getting sicaflex off anything, so took me a couple of hours to fix and now all good.

intially going with 4.11/s and limited slip diffs...

then really understanding I need 4.88s and lockers... wasted $$ on the initial setup. Poor first choice and wasted effort on the inital setup.

Also wasted time and money with primary electric cooling fans.

Oh, I read the title and I thought you were asking WHO were the worst Mods....

IKID :D

Spud i got my flare rubber off a mob in melbourne, perfect fit,old auto rubber or sumfin,he has a website. Oh yeah scotts old auto rubber i think.

My worst mod i reckon is the larger front brake calipers off a hilux or troopy, had to cut backing plate,in the end less pedal feel. Braking didnt improve any i noticed.

Shorter exhaust exited in front of passenger rear wheel with a 3b. Lasted less than a year before I decided I was losing too many brain cells. Never really liked my airbags either.

Thanks mate

Yeah I've got it all sorted now

My worst was actually free. It's an iron oxide coating that goes on body seams and window sills.

snorkel.

looks cool but it always wants to get ripped off by trees and rocks, at least I bought the Malaysian knock off.

I think I'm gonna sell it, now just have to patch the hole.

What!? You mean to tell me you never go through 6 ft. of water???

I cant believe it...

Over the many years of owning my FJ40 I've done a few things that I regretted.

Spector Off Road 4" lift with aluminum castor shims, super long shackles and the worst riding springs you can waste your cash on. Replaced with Skyjackers 4" springs, shortened shackles, 100% improvement.
Cutting hole in dash for stereo.
Cutting windshield frame for soft tops and soft doors, dumb.
Installed a SBC but built 283" thinking it had enough power, now have 350.
Holly carburetor.
Use a rag joint for steering conversion
Not using over the fenders headers first time.

I'm sure there's more stuff I'll think of later. It is interesting to see what people have done that doesn't work out as expected or as advertised. Most of my stuff I fixed or replaced, or patched up.

Throwing $$ into an electric fuel pump as a fix for a blown aftermarket manual pump that went bad after install. It worked more or less but it was noisy as heck. Took me just a few weeks to get annoyed enough to just order the kyosan pump.
Since having my truck just over a year and a half and now gone so far as having friends over today to install the cylinder head... I am thinking everything I do through three times over.
