Passenger side, looks pretty good but it was time to change. Grease looked good but thinning, oil seal not leaking but it was rather stiff. Also, the trunnions had a "catch" at dead center, checking with the fish scale was 8 lbs across except in the middle, where it jumped up to 10 lbs.

Plus some genuine Marlin Ecoseals from Mark @65swb45!

Need to get some grease, and then will finish the passenger side.

Good stuff! Joint Fuji!
Yup - whole kit from Mark's Off Road. Koyo trunnions, Joint Fuji seals and felts. Re-packed the wheel bearings (relatively new Koyos as well), which were full but had more thinning out grease. Found some pitting on the rotor, but the brake pads were at about 50% and there's no pulsing, good feel in the pedal so just sent it. Stupid that you have to open up the brake system for this job, though.

Passenger side all done, driver's teardown tomorrow night and finish it out on Friday.

Neat, just plowed through the thread.
Great work and documentation, appreciate it.

Are those Emkai wheels? My 40 came with a similar set and they’ve grown on me over the years.

Cool - mine are similar but they have no markings on them, suggesting they are old Chinesium whatevers. Fine for now but eventually want to get a set of stockers. Actually - I only need 3 since I already have one kicking around the garage.

It's done but damn, I hate that job. So much cleaning and scraping and cleaning and old grease. Had it up to here with old grease.

Next up - TREs and I ordered a rebuild kit for the OEM PS pump, just for fun.

Every semi major job I do on a cruiser I tell myself I’ll get a parts washer before next time.
It’s been too many years of me lying to myself.

:princess: just asked me why I don't have one, and tbh I should get one, but then where do you put it when not being used, and have to get it out and set it up and etc. Meh.

Parts washers are garbage in Kalifornia, unless you're licensed to get the lung-eating solvent. The water-based degreasers are crap unless you can plumb in hot 🔥 water. My washer is now in a corner of the yard, covered by Morning Glory vines.

Can you not get mineral spirits?

Can you not get mineral spirits?
We got spoiled with the same methyl ethyl bad stuff the rest of the country gets to use. Then the green hand struck. I got to hang on a little longer than most by taking on rebuilding starters and alternators ( something about water-based solvents and electrical components not playing well together 😉)

Eventually they closed that loophole too.

Can you not get mineral spirits?

Nope. Not in LA county. About the only thing left to use is diesel or kerosene, which I use once in awhile. The stink is pretty bad.

They have some paint thinner substitutes at home Depot, but they're very expensive and don't work very well.

I ended up using straight Awesome from the dollar store and a lot of elbow grease. It didn't get everything but it also didn't require a lot of PPE to use. I haven't used the purple stuff (Super Clean?), it's supposed to do well on grease (and it can etch aluminum, apparently).

PS pump broken down to its component parts. Reference photo so that I remember how the C-slipper goes back in the pump body. This is a pretty easy one to tackle, just more O-rings. Bushing is in good nick but that front seal is Col. Sanders Extra Crispy.

I give it 50/50 chance of actually fixing the groaning problem, my guess is this design just isn't the best.

TREs were more treat than trick this Halloween. No heat needed to remove, one alignment and steering wheel adjustment and they are all good to go. These are Japanese-made 555s from Mark's Off Road @65swb45. Hit them with clear coat last night and installed this afternoon, with plenty of time left for a nap before Halloween / World Series shenanigans.

Will get to the PS pump tomorrow.

Got this on the brain today. Deadmau5 in honor of the ghosts that hang with me in Woodrow. Happy Halloween Mudders!
