:worms:Oh yeah, you done did it.

I'm putting the windshield wiper motor re-assembly on hold as of course since I have it fully disassembled I figure I might as well paint it! Will need to media blast it but don't have an easy way to use soda or walnut shells so of course I will need to order a sand blasting box! That should come in handy for many projects and found one complete for $100 shipped. I could've done a DIY one for $50-$75 but this has some nice features that the DIY one wouldn't. This just started as a cleaning of the wiper motor right? Can I' worms indeed...

So instead I installed the tan bikini top that came with the 75. Looks pretty cool with the tan seats. I guess it is reversible but I like the camo on the inside. Makes me feel all military lol.

Decided to open another can of worms... Have swapped out the fuel lines under the hood so figured I better do the same for the lines to the tank. Well thought it would be good to investigate under the tank while I was at it and glad I did. Huge mess under there and classic rust. Tank looks pretty good I will rust treat it however and treat the tub too. Any thoughts on simply using a rust converter on the rusty spots or maybe POR15 the entire tub where the gas tank sits?

I actually have a new one on the way which was going to go in the 75 as I hoard parts here and there. But now I will use to replace. I won't toss this one though and may try to repair.

Has anyone tried this: POR-15® Fuel Tank Repair Kit

Got all my new fuel lines cut - of course I'm a foot short! When I bough the hose I was only going to replace the hoses from the carb but figure now might as well do it all. Note the woven covered replacement hose - 14mm fits perfectly. I have enough leftover for the 75 too. And I still need to cut the elbow but I've got it all measured out. Thanks @Racer65 for the info on the compatible hose (Continental 59202).

This is the filler pipe to the gas tank. Does anyone know if the gasket between it and the body is still available? Or should I just cut one out of rubber gasket material?

Oh and it looks like the tank already had one repair so adding three more seems like I may just be asking for trouble in the future.

The infamous fuel line gasket! Feels pretty crispy was hoping to repair with aquaseal like I did with my inner transfer case boot (before @Racer65 created the Unobtanium part). Not sure if it is salvageable though...

After thinking more about this I should've used the stuff I just found that I forgot I have - Mastercoat. Since POR15 doesn't adhere well to painted surfaces but Mastercoat does after roughening it up some, that would've been better in this application. Leave it to me to do things at least twice.

So tomorrow I'll sand it down - the POR15 will stick nicely to the rusted spots but should sand pretty easily(?) where it covers paint. Then I'll hit up the entire thing with that Mastercoat.

Yep, it's the price we pay for learning things 'the hard way.'. Have to do it twice :bang:

Well that little POR15 experiment was fun... :bang:

Probably added 2 hours to the job but glad I went back and took it all off. More rust hiding under there than I thought. Now I will treat the raw metal with metal prep and the hit it all up with that Mastercoat stuff!

Sufficiently worked over doing this in 95+ degree heat. Good fun. Guess my sandblasting cabinet test will have to wait until another day.

Scored this nice little bench top blasting cabinet for $100 shipped. Comes complete but I added the moisture separation system. Spent nearly 3/4 of the cost of the cabinet on that!

Okay this looks only slightly better than the tiger stripe lol. Dang that MasterCoat is some strong stuff. Respirator worthy!

And I scored an OEM gasket for my fuel sending unit for the gas tank! Now just waiting for the tank to arrive. I will have replaced all rubber hoses and belts in the cruiser. Nice milestone!

Gin, Is there anyone else around us? I just picked up my 40 last night from LA! I could always use some friends to help figure my new toy out.

He's gonna tell you "It didn't happen without pictures" and then he will throw this :flipoff2: and call it "the official MUD salute".

Having been to the Bay area many times, I can tell you there are definitely more people there than just you and Mike!!

Welcome!!

Finally got a chance to test out my sandblasting cabinet - worked pretty good although I still wore a respirator as the seal wasn't perfect. I will connect the shop vac to the exhaust so then it should be a non-issue.

The soda blasting media worked great on the aluminum however not as well on the steel as can be seen in the photo. Both pieces were blasted - despite holding the gun on the rust for quite some time it didn't make a difference, even at higher PSI. Will need to get some more aggressive blasting media for that.

Okay I have a question - should I paint my rust treated area or just leave it as is? I'm thinking of just leaving it silver since it is not visible. Seems like a waste of expensive rattle can freeborn red...

Thoughts?
