Here is the filler neck - it has some minor rust on it. Should I worry about that? I can blast it clean but then it will have no protective coating (what's left of the zinc coating). I can paint the outside no problem but what about the inside?

Wow $50 to zinc plate this item. I think I'll pass... Spray paint on the outside and "maybe" I try to soda blast the rust off the inside.

Got the new tank installed! Note that I did not route the wire for the fuel sending unit as pictured - it was installed on the cover. Of course I left one bolt off the tranny cover and it is buried deep. I'm hoping that it will be easy to see and install once I lift up my Tuffy case.

I forgot to take a picture of the gas filler neck post soda blast - looked really good just hit it up lightly to remove the rust and film that had built up on it. Decided to install without any other coatings. I think it will be just fine.

Wow that was fast. I was just there a few hours ago! You must really want to drive the Cruiser.

I don't know about fast seemed like it took forever. Now the big question is whether I fill it full or just partially full to check for leaks...

After 30 minutes of trying to blindly insert the bolt while contorting in ways I didn't think I could contort I ended up taking just about everything out to put in that stupid bolt. :censor::bang::censor::bang::censor::bang::censor:

Yep, that 'backup set' of flat glass OEM side view mirrors look good... You got the even nicer 87901-55011 convex units ordered, right? ;)

Don't mind me, those you have there work just fine. :steer:

Maybe convex for the passenger side...

Here is a tip-When you go to fill the tank use a one gallon fuel can... Check your fuel gauge between each gallon to see when it rises off the E peg. Mine took three gallons before the gauge moved- might be a good thing to know in the future.
HTH,
Will

Okay I did this and 3 gallons got the gauge moving too! So that is good to know if running on fumes. I try not to let it get too low ever.

And wow either my nose is desensitized to the smell of gas from the manual pouring of the three one gallon containers and spilling some or I don't smell gas in the garage anymore. I'm hoping it is the latter. Happy days don't need to hear the wife complain about the gas smell!!!

Now you know your safety margin when it hits empty...

When I put in the new tank several years ago I took a full can with me and drove around the neighborhood 'til it died then put a gallon in and went home to finish the test so I would know when it wouldn't feed any more fuel from the tank to the engine.

Luckily for me that 3 gallons saved me a long walk 20 years ago on the highway... forgot to fill up on the way back to San Antonio from lake LBJ. I looked down and saw it almost on empty with the 3 speed and F.5 engine and 33's. I slowed down to 55mph and prayed for a gas station. Was on the E mark when I found one- had almost 3 gallons in the "reserve" when I filled up. This was with the tank that came in my truck in 1987 when I got it...

Once again the wonders of what MR. T planned ahead for... Now with the 350 motor I'm dropping in a second tank to supplement the Jerry can since gas is cheaper here in town vs. the hill country...
HTH,
Will

So I was doing some painting and sitting next to the cruiser and heard a pop sound like metal bulging. I thought is that the gas tank expanding? I took off the gas cap and out whooshed some air from the tank. That can't be right can it?

I feel confident I plumbed everything correctly - the vent lines run to the evaporator and then to the line that leads to the charcoal canister. Maybe my charcoal canister needs replacing?

There are probably only about 2.5 gallons in the tank since I only filled it with 3 and idled it for awhile. Maybe I need more fuel in the tank?

I read somewhere about seams blowing that is the last thing I want with this new tank!

Your input is appreciated!

I took out the charcoal canister and did the air test. Pretty significant airflow restriction so it sounds like it needs replacement. Will order the VC120 autozone one.

I also got some painting done - I will start the wiper motor rebuild soon! Hope I remember how to reassemble. My gasket was in pretty good shape so I decided to trace it onto some rubberized gasket material and cut it out. Turned out pretty good should work just fine.

And painted the windshield hooks and installed. While I've never put my windshield down good to have the correct hooks on for that option. I'll save the other OEM ones for the 75 which face the opposite direction and will work properly. If I remember correctly I should've used screws for them but all I have are bolts. Maybe I'll run to the hardware store tomorrow to swap with some stainless screws.

Got the wiper assembly all rebuilt! Turned out great and no leftover parts!!! And installed the mirror arm. Going to plastic paint the mirror head and install soon. Only issue is I only have one speed on the wipers. See video below. I think that is low speed correct? I seem to remember I only had one speed prior to the rebuild but am not 100% certain since I rarely drove it in the rain. Will clean up the contacts and try to check the switch. Are there any tests I can do before tearing into the dash?
