4sp. top works fine with cap installed over the end. Bolts on the same and shifts smooth.
I disagree that over the long term the two will work interchangeably. Toyota changed the design for a reason - why not reuse an available part if it "works fine".

With the 5spd bushing shoved over the 4spd end the plastic is not supported laterally by metal, meaning that over time those two sides will be crushed and end up resulting in excessive slop.

The 4spd shifter end is a slot that directly actuates several "fingers" corresponding to the various gears. The 5spd shifter end is a "ball", with the bushing, that sites in a little cup attached to a shaft which when rotated, pushed or pulled actuates another mechanism deeper inside the tranny to select gears.

Yes, you can save $100 now by reusing the 4spd shifter, but at some point that bushing will wear out and you'll be pulling the tranny to fix the problem. Pay now or pay later...

So I was under the impression that you should purchase both new, is it possible to use the transfer case that is on the 60 now? BM when you go to put that sucker in let me know if you want some help. I'm up in LA and after this week I go back to weekends only off. Let me know because doing it myself would save some coin. :D

I do not think you can buy the t-case new.

Just find the last of the split cases w/ 38 mm idler.
They started in late '85 60's and went until the end of the 60's in '87

Thanks Man

So it is just a bushing thing that clips onto the end of the 4spd shifter to adapt it to the 5 spd? Thats pretty slick! How much is this oil slinger thingy? Part #?

Thanks

The oil squirter is a couple of bucks. It is a plastic nipple, buy 'em new from Toyota.

Take a peak at the "Technical Links" at the top of this website, there are a couple of articles about it...

Mine is 7/85

Does that qualify as a 38mm?

Kevin,

Whe are you planning to do this??? I will be more than happy to run down there and give you a hand with what ever I can...mine came set up as all one piece but as you know I have taken the t-case apart a few times and have the good book....ie the factory manual if you need anything you know how to get a hold of me...

In theory the 38 mm split case ran from 4/85 to 7/87

In reality, you won't know until you get your case away from your trans..

Actually you can measure while the T-case is still on the vehilce...

The 34mm & 38mm designation refers to the size of the idler shaft on the T-Case. The idler shaft just happens to pop out of the back of the t-case where it is held in place by a reatainer. Get a set of calipers and measure... It is either 34 or 38 mm...

I run a 34mm behind my H55F, it has worked great. The 4mm difference is marginal in any strnegth increase as Split T-cases rarely fail...

I dont understand what your saying here?

That wasn't very clear was it. I loaded a photo of the part (spacer) that makes the early trans diffiernt from the later trans. If you have an early trans without this spacer, or in the case of a H55F it's where the 5th gear goes, then you need to lengthen the front drive shaft and shorten the rear drive shaft if you add the H55F tranny. Hope I made that a bit clearer. I am a picture kind of guy so words take me longer.

The H42 tranny with the spacer is the same length as the H55F. The split case is the same in both cases, of course. SOOO... the H55F is a bolt in for the H42 with the spacer (mid-1985 and later).

On FJ60s with the H42 and no spacer, the difference in the length of the drive shafts vs. an FJ60 with tranny and spacer is equal to the length of the spacer. Therefore, when the H55F is fitted to the earlier production truck, the drive train dimensions are the same as the later production truck.

You can simply swap drive shafts with a later model FJ60, or alter the existing drive shafts to compensate for the difference.

Es claro?

BM

Sounds like you will have minimum issues with install of the H55F. Goodluck!

Thanks Kurt, I thought the 38 mm was the only one designed to clear the squirter.

Mangler I talked with Malcolm the installer at MAF about the swap this morning and here is what I learned. The new tranny from Toyota comes with a 90 warranty from date of purchase. MAF's is $2700ish, a used unit from AUS but it comes with it's correct transfer case. They are both completely gone through and come with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. Also whilke I was there they had 10 of the long range tanks that had just come in from AUS, all sold. Before we start the MAF bash, I realize that I do have the luxury of going there, dealing with them face to face, etc. It comes down to an extra 900 for the correct t-case and a 12 mo/12K mile warranty and it includes the shifter with the correct knob.

Ken,

You must have lots of time on your hands or work real close to them because every time I have gone out there they have nothing even thought hey say they do on the phone..Have a great weekend and that tranny info is good to know because some day my 45lv will be getting the 5spd set up :)

Most FJ60's already have a split tcase. The NEW COMPLETE H55F can be had for well under $2000.

It is a bolt up with no real expertisie required.

MAF is charging quite a bit of bucks for comfort when any Toyoya dealer can beat this price every day at retail.

MAF bites....IMHO. Call CDan.

Thanks Sloan! Thats a lot of coin though. These things are $1800 NEW from Toyota. I dont see how they sell it USED for $2700 with a Tcase that you can buy anywhere for like $500 rebuilt!

Glad to hear those tanks are still coming into the US. I will eventually wants one.
