Can you get the H55F and the transfer case both new from the dealer? Toyota of Santa Monica sends me 20% off coupons for "parts" every once in awhile.

I got mine free. It was used, and smooth shifting it has remained. T-case has mainshaft spline slop tho. The 2F in mine gets my truck to 75mph@2750 easily, and I love that. The lower first gear is just lovely, today a neighbor's ("4wd") Suburban was spinning it's tires at the bottom of our hill, and the snow on the road was but 2-3in deep. Put a strap to it, dragged it onto the track in the middle of the street, unhooked and left. As I did, she had spun her tires again and had backed tailfirst into the drift by the curb. I woulda had a thougher time in the H42 1st gear, but not with this one. Tradeoff is that it runs the rpms out in a few feet in the pavement. I'll live w/that any day. Yota shoulda put H55s into the US trucks from day one, no doubt about it.

"If your ID plate under the hood on the driver side of the firewall has an H41 stamped into it, it is the older style FJ-60, if the plate has H42 stamped in it then you have the latter 4 speed right??

What is the cut off for the H41 because I am looking for a donaor FJ-60 and I am still confused as to what the last month of the H41 was in the FJ-60?"

Uh.. If your finding H41's in FJ60's in this country your special.. the H41 is a non-usa tranny with the 4.8 to 1 gearing in first which is what the H55F has.. the F designation means 4wd version (see I pay attention Sherpa).. USA transmissions are H42's.. FJ60 and FJ62 Transmissions are all 19spline output but the difference is the length of the tailshaft and whether or not it has the additional spacer that appeared sometime in 85.. Spacer is there then no CV joint on front of tcase, no spacer then CV joint. if you don't have that spacer then there is not a hole that needs to be plugged, and if you have an FJ62 Tcase then there is no hole to be plugged. If you have the Transfercase off an H42 with the spacer then the hole is drilled for the bolt that goes thru the spacer and tcase. Easy to plug and you need to do it so that the transfer case doesn't fill the tranny up and pump itself dry.
Every H55F I've installed I had the person buy the shifter. I think there is a difference but didn't compare last time I pulled one out of an Hj60 last month.. Wasn't worth killing a $1500 transmission in my opinion..
I can snap a pic of where the hole should be in the splitcases on the bench.. It's located just above to pocket for the oiler cup for the 5th gear.
Make sense? Nice tranny, but gonna take a while to pay for that gas difference!

Buy em new? Uh sure anythings possible.. All the H55F's I've installed were new in the box. Never installed a new Tcase tho. I can't afford one myself..

Love it in my 40. Running 4.56s, 35" mts and the H55F puts me at 2100rpms @ 75mph.

We got one new several years ago, customer wanted it... They (to my knowledge) don't come assembled as a single unit... You would have to get them seperately.

Thanks Guys

Looks like not a single bad work about this mod! Thats very cool! Thanks for all of your input! I am hoping to get a nice price of $1800 WITH the shifter shipped to my door!

Looks like my only concern is this oil slinger thingy and drilling and tapping that hole to prevent the sharing of oil. Does that really matter? They use the same stuff anyway!

Anyone running one with 4.10's and 35's??

Thanks

So I was under the impression that you should purchase both new, is it possible to use the transfer case that is on the 60 now? BM when you go to put that sucker in let me know if you want some help. I'm up in LA and after this week I go back to weekends only off. Let me know because doing it myself would save some coin. :D

thanks

Clutch stays. I will try to load the part that makes the difference. Without this the drive shafts need to be worked on. This adapter is where the 5th gear is housed also attaches to the TC.

I dont understand what your saying here?

Got mine from cruiserparts.net ($1850 shipped to me). They included the 5th gear oiler and cap for the shifter. The hole, I just tapped to 7/16 fine thread and red locktited a short bolt in. You will see were the oiler fits on the trans. side of the transfercase, snaps in. My h55 is in a converted 89 fj62. Was a little more complicated to install but still not hard. Will be a simple bolt in for 85-87, with no mods to drive shafts. I'm runnin 4.56's with 35in. general m/t's, Great low end for wheeling and cruise at 70-75mph at 3000 to 3200 rpm. Great upgrade!

What cap for the shifter? Did the 5th gear oiler pop right into your existing 4spd tcase or does it need to be modified? I never had my tcase apart, so i dont know if my tcase has the provision for this

Did you use a flush bolt and lop the head off or did you leave the head on or what??

Thakns for all of your info! Hopefully my tcase has the provision for this oiler thingy! How can i check?

Your 4sp shifter has a flat end the 5sp. needs a round end, this is what the cap is for, it just snaps on the end. You will understand when you see it. The transfer case will have the area for the oiler, again you will see it when you take it apart, its on the side toward the trans. right above the 5th gear, it catches and drips oil on the gear. Just used a short hex headed bolt, plenty of room for the head. These things will be clear once you disassemble the trans. and transfer and take a look at them. Go for it , its simple.

Thanks Man

So it is just a bushing thing that clips onto the end of the 4spd shifter to adapt it to the 5 spd? Thats pretty slick! How much is this oil slinger thingy? Part #?

Thanks

for those of you that bought these from vendors or dealers, did they come with the top shifter plate, or is the 4spd one reused?

thanks

Mine came with the trans. so I don't have the price or part#. Check with whoever you got the trans from they should have them or should have supplied it with the trans. same with the shifter cap. If no luck, try cruiserparts.net. They might be able to get them for you. Good luck with install, IT is simple and well worth the cost.

I know that CalFJ60 has done one, I have not. But I am willing to lend a hand, just for the experience.

The H55F uses a different shifting mechanism on the top of the tranny than the H42 so it comes complete. Some have reused the 4spd shifter by forcing the round bushing onto the shifter end. I can see how it would work, kinda. But the H55F shift end has a ROUND end with the bushing fitted over it. With all that other expense get the 5spd shifter and use it as Toyota intended...
