Did a few odds and ends today.

I also pulled the top cover off of the transmission to make sure it's decent inside there. I don't see any big chips, or weird wear patterns, but I do notice a couple odd discolorations in there that I don't know if I should be concerned about or not.

I can't feel anything when I run my fingers over them, but still...

Overall doesn't look terrible. There's some markings that look like circular scoring, but like I said I can't feel them at all. Not sure what that's about.

Here's a closeup of the light rust on the edges of a couple gear teeth, and the discoloration that I'm a bit concerned about.

So, should I be worried about this transmission? It's australian, but so far it's the best looking thing from down under I've taken apart, and it feels smooth when I turn it by hand.

Those grooves in the reverse gear are part of the gear. They are normal. They're like that from the factory. See a pic of mine.

That little bit of rust on the outer edge of the teeth is not significant. The gears mesh on the flats.

You're not going to be able to tell if the tranny is good or not by fiddling with it fully assembled off the truck.

Make sure you've got the shift forks aligned correctly when you bolt the cover back on, otherwise it won't shift at all. Make sure it shifts through the gears before installing it on the truck.

I think you are good to go, the rust is on the "non-work-hardened" surfaces.
Grand dad told me that if you look for trouble, you WILL find it.

I was more concerned about the discoloration (light grey discoloration) than the machining marks there. Never seen that before, so not sure if it indicates anything or not.

That's probably good advice. I can certainly install it, and drive it to really find out it's health. I have another H55f (that's brand new) that I could put in it if this one turns out to be bad, or rebuild this one. Easy enough I guess.

Thanks guys!

Today I started by mounting the little efficient 12V fan into the heater (that will come on with the Webasto to warm the cabin). Very easy really. Two strips of 1/8" ABS plastic, a couple of holes, and a little trimming and the fan was mounted simply inside the air duct.

I will probably trim the tabs even a little more, since I imagine any obstruction both slows the air flow, and also makes noise. I like quiet fans. :) This thing spins really easily, so when the normal fan is on, I don't think it will obstruct the airflow at all, but with as little current as it draws, I'm tempted to have it come on anytime the stock blower is on also.

Then I went crazy with the Anti-Rattle Kit!

Not too shabby for only getting a real day and a half to work on the 60, while helping Dad with his 40, and while we were all recovering from some absolutely awful bug. Definitely slowed us down a bit for the past week or so.

...but back to work. :( Not positive when I get to come back and work on the 60 some more. My schedule is pretty busy for the rest of march, and I'm being exiled to some terrible humid, low altitude midwestern state for at least the month of April. And I'm devoting more and more time to trying to get a better job (see: exiled for a month to someplace I don't want to go), so there's no way that this truck will be ready for Cruise Moab. I'll hopefully take one of Dad's trucks instead (the 60 or the 42), but that's if my employer doesn't try to screw with me even more.

Doctor says 2 weeks off work minimum! Time spent outside will speed your recovery. ;)

...it generally does.

Time outside, green chile, and ice cream. They are medicinal. It's just science.

My granddad told me if it ain't broke, don't fix it... if only i listened!

If there wasn't something wrong with it, then you wouldn't feel the need to tinker with it.

Any updates with your build? My to-do list has been stationary since your last post...

I wish! I have been banished by my employer to be stuck in various flat, boring, rainy places for a long time. I might get to go home at the end of April. I will be taking one of Dad's cruisers to Cruise Moab, and then hopefully I get some time off so I can go do something useful on my 60.

All month in a classroom and no time in the shop makes me cranky. I feel funny without a busted knuckle or a few cuts on my hands.

I left the flat, boring town and made it to NM today. I'm really just grabbing the Blue-Jay 42 for Cruise Moab, but I spent a few minutes in the shop inventorying parts that had arrived, and stuff.

1--the AC compressor. It only fits with the front two bolt holes. The rear two are halfway aligned with the bracket. Not sure what I will do about that. I may just weld, drill and tap to make the rear bolts (or just one) line up. The lower rear bolt pad has a lot more meat on it to do that then the upper one.

2--my new fan and clutch (blue) have arrived...

3--this might send me into a conniption. I have that beautiful powder coated Tcase rear output flange. I just bought a new front output flange, which is also beautiful. Both are beautiful, but they don't match. I may have to buy a new rear flange just so they match...

4--I bought a set of the Dapper HID projectors. I'll give more of a review when I drive the truck, but initial thoughts are that these are VERY well made.

I ordered them with the LED halo. I will wire that as a daytime running light. I think I will simply have them on anytime the key is on and the parking brake is released. Here's the LED halo turned on...

That's it for now. Tomorrow I'll head for CO, and Cruise Moab. After that, I'm hoping to get a bunch of time to get my 60 back together.
