gears

4.88's, install kits, knuckle rebuild kit, and a lock right should be here by the end of the week... less than 1k to my door...

Thanks to bugsnbikes(tim on mud) and Carl at JTs Parts & Accessories, Justdifferentials.com For the great the price on the group buy...

Nothing better than a bunch of new parts to get the motivation up...:bounce:

Chris

I bought a tire groover this week too... For some reason i had gotten the idea the tire groovers were 2 to 300 $, but the one i got was 60 bucks to my door... 300 Watt Standard Grooving Iron ... It works good as long as you take your time and let it stay hot..

I grooved my 2 front tires so far and it took bout 30 minutes per tire. The grooves are about 1/4" deep... It should help my tires perform better on the road... I also balanced my tires with some BB's( 14 ounces in each) wow what a difference above 35 or so and on the highway...

here's a pic of 1 of the tires after grooving and the left overs...

Christmas in October

All my goodies arrived today...:bounce: I feel like a kid on Christmas morning.:grinpimp:... Nothing like 58#'s of new parts to keep ya motivated... Can't wait to get them in the truck... After driving with 35's on stock gears it should feel like a hot rod with the new gears...:steer:

Thanks Pete...

Jim is going to set the gears up for me... I can't wait to get them in:steer:... Guess my SOA will happening sooner than i thought...:grinpimp:

Chris

picked my 3rd members up from Jim earlier this week... Hope to get to work on it soon...

still been going back and forth about the SOA and think i have finally decided to just go ahead and get it all done at the same time as the gears and front axle rebuild...

went wheeling at Big Rock in Maysville Ky again this past friday and i banged my front shackles around a couple times and that pretty much made my decision easy about the SOA... :grinpimp:

here's a few pics from friday... enjoy...

That reminds me of PaulE's old 'runner.

that's funny... He has met paul and some of the other ROTR folks a few years ago as ROTR( as a club) was petering out...

Clearence

Well finally got the nerve to cut my front fenders up some... Got the passenger side 90% done... It still needs a skim coat and some sanding but i am happy with how the end product will look... Now i just need to do the other side... I bent some 1" dom to match the fender and welded the fender to it and then welded the inner fender to the bottom of the dom... It was not to bad to do, just time consuming with welding the sheet metal to .120 wall dom....

Next it will be time to shorten the quarter panels, and build a rear bumper and tire carrier... Especially since i smushed 1 quarter and the stock rear bumper the last time i was out wheelin...

pics are not the greatest for some reason, i think i must have changed something on the camera and didn't know it.. :hhmm:

That looks like crap. Therefore it's perfect for a real trail truck.

When are you gonna come up and do mine? I tried cutting my outer fender and then slitting the inner and pulling it to the outer edge, but couldn't seem to mange the geometry. It's got a bunch of bird**** upside down weld on it, and would prolly fall apart if it actually touched a rock.

You make it look easy, Mr. Mad Skillz.

Mad maybe... The skillz are not as good as they used to be ... it will look better with some more grinding and a little mud...

I had to make pretty long slits in the fender well to get it to come together... I was surprised that when i cut the slits the open spots that it created were not as wide as i expected. Worst part is i still only have one side done...

Well i still have not got the fender on the other side done yet. But i am happy to say i got my 4.88's in :bounce2:... Did the back on christmas night and did the front on the 26th... I do have to say that it is not as big as a difference as i thought it would be, but i have not been on the highway yet either... I really like tho, feels real good around town... as long as i can cruise on the highway at 65 or so and the motor it is not screaming i will be happy...

i got to say it again.... thanks jim...

going wheeling tomorrow, can't wait to ge it in 4low and feel the difference...:steer:

hope everybody has a good new year...

Well the 4.88's were great on the trail :steer:... As for the highway, that's a whole other story...

On my way to Maysville i started having a problem with the 60 getting a little to warm... Stopped and checked for coolant level/leaks and nothing out of the ordinary... So i made my way on to Big Rock with a couple of stops to let it cool down, which it did really quick... Not really any problems while wheeling either...

So on the way home i tried not to run as fast on the AA and the highway and that seemed to do the trick, except for only running about 55mph the whole way home:frown:...

So i kinda figured out the 60 is not liking to run over 2800 rpm or so... I guess i am having some kind of cooling issue i am going to have to investigate...:hhmm:

It will probably be a couple months till i go wheeling again so i got a little time figure it out...

Chris

Sounds like the cooling system is maxed out on flow. IOW, there is a restriction in the system, probably a plugged up radiator.

Yea that was what i was thinking. It had a leaky radiator in it and i swapped one in that came out of the parts truck and it leaked too ... Then i was in kinda of a hurry one time when i topped off the coolant and i think an air pocket did the head gasket in. I don't see any water on the dipstick, but it does seem to put a lot of steam out the exhaust here lately. I have not really investigated it to much yet since it has been cold. I just carry some water and antifreeze with me all the time. It just sucks cause i love driving the dam thing :D...

But the fix is on the way. I just have to keep saving my pennys for a tcase adapter. Thats gonna be the hardest part for me with what i really want to. Time will tell... :hhmm:

Going for a Diesel

Well i think i have finally made my mind up and i am going to buy a low mile 6.2 diesel out of a military blazer this weekend. I think for the money i can't pass it up.

I really want to put a nv4500 behind it and then the split case. I think it will be a good combo with the low 1st gear and the OD too. The killer is going to be the tcase adapter unless i can find one 2nd hand.

It might take a little while to get everything together, but i am pretty stoked after reading on mud about the fuel mileage folks are getting out of the 6.2 in a 60.

I will post up more details as things progress.
