Where have all the rear bumper fabricators gone!?

Let me beat a dead horse for a brief moment.:deadhorse:

In my 37 year-long career my philosophy always was a sale without a profit is a gift. I did not and could not run a gift shop and retain my job.

People who think it is OK for them to make money but not anyone else to do so pisses me off to this day.

I agree with you Dan. However, I'm not quite sure why the vendors "not getting their fair shake" debate is part of this thread. I'm not seeing members complaining about the price of rear bumpers within this thread. Most who have posted are running exclusively small vendor mods...myself included. I've bought parts from you, Onur, Joey, Jason, the Prinsu guy, etc. ...all at full retail without asking for a discount (with the exception of the Prinsu group buy). There may be a faction of members asking for discounts or whatever, but I see mostly small Mud vendor products being purchased, installed, and reviewed daily. Love this stuff...

If you bought from me it was far from "full retail".... :)

On the other hand I was able to feed my dogs..

Price quoted was price paid...that's for sure.

Per last comment I think we saw an influx of newer 80 owners when the prices bottomed out a few yrs back.

These guys may remember Yota mini-truck prices & 22re parts costs (a sewing machine of a motor, loved them) - but it would seem a general expectation was they were servicing a ~$5K loaded FZJ80, not a $55-60K flagship rig from ~15yrs ago (then).

So that in mind, when you talk a parts kit for axle service is $350, or a HG job is ~$1500, they were unprepared (not everyone, not generalizing to that degree).

Add to that a guy spent $5K on a 80, thinks a $2500 Slee RR bumper (using as example since best frame integration bumper readily available ATM) - is fooking crazysauce.

He wasn't here buying a $15-20K+ used 80, a $3500 supercharger (Dan price), or whatever, so a bumper that was 10% of purchase price for a older member is all of near 50% to a guy who bought the bottom of market price.

Can't blame them, but they may carry an expectation yet. Lack of comprehensive research on their part?

Just a thought on 'why'.

OT, but yet another shoutout to @cruiserdan for all the years of great prices on parts. The knowledge that went with the excellent, correct parts was the singularly best auto parts transactions anyone could ask for, let alone get repeatedly. Still miss it, still thankful for it while it lasted. --Thank you, Dan!

If the dogs ever need food or you a Keystone, you know to 'hang a shingle'.

Shamanism lives. ;)

Clients like you made my job a joy. Most of my job encompassed running a large department in a major metro market. My Land Cruiser clients were my escape.

I remember jousting with an odd academic that had a Cruiser he was attempting to look after.

Truly the good old days.

I have gotten much better over the years finding the right type of customers. This has resulted in less work but more profitable work. I tend to like to do things correctly and take my time knowing that my time is being paid well. You just have to find the customers that are willing to pay for good work and have a connection with their landcruiser. To them it is not just a vehicle, but a passion or a family heirloom. Really it all boils down to a positive relationship and having mutual respect for each other, same as any relationship.

What happen to Frankie's original fj80 progressive springs? Is he still around? Was made in USA wasn't it?

First slinky suspension. IMHO

Reevesci, I hope you didn't take this as me complaining about your prices or anyone elses for that matter. I literally tried to bribe you to make one more bumper. Your response was professional and understandable. All the prices seem fair to me for the labor and experience that goes into them. I guess im just depressed that i got into the cruiser game a year too late. I drove jeeps up until last year. A typical jeep life span is maybe 7 years and then it falls apart... the first time I hopped into a 20 year old land cruiser and all the windows rolled up and down and all the switches worked I realized what I had been missing! I dont know where i was going with this...

Something CDan doesn't point out: Cheap LC parts were subsidized.... by a very robust service department that received very little to no discounts.... trust me... I made my bones there under Cdan's watchful eye .

Now I appreciate it all the more - the thought that a Prius or e-Camry owners' service & parts in any way indirectly subsidized my 80 parts is the very definition of "frosting on a cake".

I'm literally chuckling at the concept:D:D

That makes my morning coffee & smile Onur --- starting the day with a smile !!

I would hit 'like' to that comment repeatedly if it showed:hillbilly:

Since I think I'm that guy, I'll just add that although I'm new to 4x4 world I've been around other worlds to know what I'm getting into, money wise.

I almost bought a 2016 wrangler, even had a down payment in. My buddy talked me into a used LC instead. Just as an idea, I found my own truck.

I figure if I go in around $15k-$20k (base vehicle $3k) I'll have a top end 4x4 which in my neighborhood (8,000 feet, mountains, etc) is super helpful.

My wife's rav4 costs that much and while I definitely have more maintenance to do I enjoy doing it (mostly), and there's no way you're spending 20k for a solid 4x4 on a showroom. I've pulled that stuck rav4 out a few times.

I'm opening my wallet because I think in the end I'll have a capable vehicle that is cost effective and I can be proud of the work I've done.

I don't enjoy spending money, but if I'm doing any given upgrade or maintenance I'd prefer to do it the best way possible.

In short, I've already saved money by not buying a $30k wrangler and then knocking on $15k in upgrades, and with interest+taxes+insurance I'm easily over $50k.

So since I'm $25k better off, ($15k lc vs $50k wrangler) and I'm doing most of my own labor I'm fine paying market value for upgrades.

Not at all. My comments are NOT directed towards you.

I, too, am in a similar position. I was able to get into my LC fairly inexpensively, with the exception of my labor. I initially had heartburn when I saw a $1200-$1500 price tag for a front bumper. Then, as I started to work on my OWN design and started seeing how much time it was taking for the design, then I calculated how much the bumper was going to weigh, figured fab costs, it quickly became apparent how the prices being charged were reasonable.

Since I am not exactly flush with cash, I must use my labor to offset the value of something. I do all my own labor. I weld, I fab, and can do everything except automatic transmission rebuilds and some body and paint. It is just time. So , eventually, I have to compromise whether I live without or take the time to build myself. Adding a bumper is an "extra" whereas, a radiator exploding becomes a necessity because I still need to get to work.

However, I have also realized from day one that this is a Land Cruiser. It ain't a Chevy. It has this reputation for a reason. The parts cost more, they tend to last longer. I shop only to stretch my cash a little more. I will NOT always purchase the "cheapest". I will rarely buy the MOST expensive. I must be able to justify my purchases somehow.

I, too, miss the days that Dan was selling parts in NM, and I am thankful that I was able to get just a slight taste of his abilities, knowledge, and his employment at that dealership.

Like I've said before, I'm not against anyone making a profit. There is a trade-off and you must decide what your business to be.
1) Just a few well-paying customers that you do work each year, but not going overboard. Stay consistent with high quality.
2) Having lots and lots of customers, making a mediocre profit margin on all of them, but having to take some crappy ones in the interest of not pissing off anyone.
3) And the last version of being the KMart of parts, undercutting all competition, don't give a hoot about the customer, as they are just another number and a means to an end.

All three business models work, but differently for different people and different markets. Decide what you want and stick to it. I sent a message to @beno to have him quote me a list of parts. He contacted me to see if I was interested in buying from him and he advised me that he would not be the least expensive for the parts. At first, I was put off by this, but I also see it from his point that he doesn't want another time-waster customer. He has no idea who I am or what I'm about or what or who I know.

I am NOT a person to blindly write a check for parts, and I will ALWAYS do my own research. I used to work behind the parts counter and I understand it. I respectfully declined to waste his time and have him take the time to bid my list of parts. I will find my list of parts, in my time, and for the prices I am willing to pay. I still respect him and I respect his choice for how he chooses to run his business. He has knowledge that most do not. If I find myself in a situation that I need that assistance, I will contact him and I will pay his price. He will have to be willing to accept at that time that there is STILL that chance I could be THAT guy that grabs his info and goes elsewhere. That's part of doing the numbers. For me, that's not how I choose to show my respect and develop MY image within this community.

Good luck to those of you that choose to try to make a living within this world of LC's. It is a very niche market unless you decide to brach out to the KMart Jeep owners and choose to do the numbers.

I hope your business gives you all you wish for. I truly don't know what path I would take if I chose to do my own business because I want the most money, but I don't have the patience or ability to say no and land in category #1.

@Pierce I second the motion for a Slee rear. My buddy has one and the build quality is better than anything else I've seen. The do hang out a bit farther and he will drag in places I won't with my labs bumper. However, if I could do it over and price wasn't an issue I would go with Slee. The only thing I don't care for is the vertical tire mount instead of matching the angle of the hatch. Granted that vertical angle will keep the tire from knocking out your rear glass if you ever catch it on a rock.
