I am fundamentally opposed to 'safety checks', but when I see bald tires I just shake my head. Tires are cheap and make a world of difference in handling and stopping especially in rain and snow. Why let them get so bad?

We have a Discount tire shop here now so it's at least keeping money mostly local - before our local Goodyear shop would attempt to pricematch the web, give a healthy discount if you told them the price from Tirerack - now they just can't do it & let you know they gladly will mount the new donuts.

Last time at Discount I am pretty sure their price was as internet or really close - so they get my vote & place I'll go 1st next time I'm buying.

I put 285/75/16 on mine, got off flea bay kenda Klever for cheap 9000 miles on so far and no complaints

I do what @Heckraiser does, by using tirerack to do research and to even use it for local quotes. Then, once I know what tire I want for sure, I go to local dealers and get quotes for the exact same tire and see if they can meet or beat the local quotes from tirerack.

Don't forget to include the freight for the tires from tire rack.

I will even allow a local installer to be $50 above the lowest quote so I support my local economy and I can take the truck there to drop it off and have them installed with me watching.

My last set of tires for the LC (Goodyear Duratracs 285/75/16) was bought at Discount Tire. All the tires for my other 2 vehicles were bought at Tires Plus.

Costco is pissy about mounting tires that are larger than stock. Discount/Americas Tires don't care and they will match prices with anyone.

I bought tires last month and found the best deal at 4wheelparts.com. Service was excellent.

/this\

and I got a very good match when I took a competitors offer to them - they did even more than match it

I really like the 4WP tire warranty - in contrast to many other places, it does cover offroad use and deflating the tires while driving offroad

my local Discount Tire is on the pissy side - (sorry oilburner)

Really? All they asked me was when I needed it by. Costco wouldn't even mount 285/75/16s. I got 4 315/75/16 GY MT/R Kevlars at DT for $1100 OTD with mounting, balancing and lifetime insurance. I got a spare used 315 Buskshot mudder at my local Llantera for $50 OTD. Too bad they never have a set of 4.

I use my '97 LX450 as a DD, and the front tires didn't pass safety inspection so I have to buy new ones. Just wondering where most people buy their tires, what brand you recommend, and where the best deals are?

Thanks in advance!

Also, is it bad to just replace the two front tires?

Ive had great luck buying tires for all our vehicles at Americas tire. Lowest prices and the best service I've ever received from a tire store.

I typically factor in the cost for lifetime balance, rotation, and road hazard insurance. I also 'try' to consider the quality of the mounting and balancing equipment they will use at the shop. Just saying.. Fortunately it's a very competitive area where I am. Costco will only install the factory size here.

That reminds me that I am due for a tire rotation.

I got my Revos at the Firestone store.

All that stuff is great until they fxxx up your lug nuts and studs beyond repair and then deny any responsibility for the damage...

I should go back there. I'm due for a free alignment.

:hmm:

No matter what I click on, this is what I get all the time.

Got my 315 Toyo MTs at treadepot back in 2011 for $268 ea. Shipping was another $150 for qty 5. The delta now between the CAN & US dollar has just about killed all cross border shopping for us Canadians.

Small local shop, no frills, no fancy waiting area, just a few work bays and an old couch if you want to sit. Prices are always same or lower than best shipped or with free shipping deal I can find and they will have them within 1-2 days at the shop waiting.

Safety inspection on tires? Where do you live?

tirerack.com
I live in NH and every year when we get the state inspection they check tire tread depth

Walmart. Beat the hell out of Les schaubs, they wanted 1200 at the lowest not including getting the KM2's as a special order.
